Sydney's new status as a two-airport city is already causing confusion for some travellers.

Julie Lundmark, from Sweden, headed to Melbourne for the weekend from Sydney Airport but was surprised to discover her return flight landed at the brand new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI).

The airport, which has been decades in the making, began operating passenger flights on Sunday.

Ms Lundmark and her friend were on Jetstar flight JQ373 when they realised the mistake.

The first international commercial flight has flown from Western Sydney International to Auckland, New Zealand.

Air New Zealand flight NZ166 took off at 9.17am, the first international departure from the airport, before landing two hours and 41 minutes later in Auckland at 1.58pm local time. (WSI’s first domestic flight – a Jetstar flight to the Gold Coast – took place yesterday.)

The Air New Zealand plane had touched down earlier on Monday at WSI, arriving from Auckland at 7.27am. The trans-Tasman flight marks the start of the airline’s travel to WSI, where it will fly three times weekly from Auckland.

A place in the history books but no toastie: my time on board Western Sydney airport’s inaugural flight

The mood is jubilant on the Airbus A320 Neo as aviation enthusiasts and locals thrill at their place on the first flight

Western Sydney airport is open from today. Here’s everything you need to know

My journey begins at 3.57am when I step out on to the street in Enmore, wheeling a small suitcase.

I’m going to catch the inaugural flight from the new Western Sydney international airport on Sunday morning, operated by Jetstar. The enormous $5.3bn greenfield development more than 40 years in the making is opening its architecturally lauded halls to commercial passengers, with significant fanfare.

There will be 188 passengers onboard JQ362, with 30 seats reserved for media and VIP guests and the other 158 sold out in just 45 minutes, according to the airline. I get to be a part of this history-making moment. But first, I have to get there.

Gina Rinehart takes fight for helipad at Hancock’s Perth HQ to tribunal

Gina Rinehart’s company Hancock Prospecting has taken its fight to have a helipad atop its West Perth headquarters to the State Administrative Tribunal after it was knocked back by the local council.

The City of Perth grounded plans for the helipad at the Ord Street building in December, despite two councillors backing the idea of a helicopter landing in the city precinct, and the lord mayor describing Rinehart as an “amazing Australian”.

Opposition to the helipad stemmed from concerns over noise, whether it was conducive with the area’s existing planning scheme, and whether allowing the CBD’s first private-use helipad would set an undesirable precedent.

James Bond Screen Tests to Happen This Weekend: Finalists Emerge for Next 007 Movie

The marathon to fit into the tux is nearing its end.

Tomorrow never dies. But for all actors except one, the dream of being the next James Bond will likely die this week.

And that is due to — finally! — a very select group of actors getting in front of cameras to screen test for the role of British agent 007.

According to several sources, Callum Turner, who recently starred in the rom-com One Night Only, and Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden are said to be in the mix for the screen tests, which are taking place in London this weekend. They could begin as early as Friday, according to two sources.

I expect you to cry: what the James Bond actors may face at the final audition

Jack Lowden, Callum Turner and Josh O’Connor are rumoured to be the final candidates taking screentests this weekend. So how can they best prepare? And who is likely to triumph?

This weekend, the identity of the next James Bond is finally expected to be known – to the insiders, at least. According to reports, a number of youngish British actors – definitely three, possibly five – will have their final screen tests.

To say it has been a long time coming is an understatement. It is five years since Daniel Craig was killed in a hail of missiles at the end of No Time to Die, and in that time – even long before it – a swarm of actors have been tipped to replace him, only to age out of the role due to a combination of indecisiveness and cutthroat backstage corporate shenanigans. Whoever is declared to be 007 will be joining the franchise after what is likely to be the longest fallow period in the franchise’s 64-year history.

What a spectre – Bond boys bounce around London

The hunt for the next James Bond will reportedly reach its final stages this weekend as screen tests for the role will be held in London.

People in the capital might be able to spot one of the apparent front-runners dashing about in a dinner jacket – with Jack Lowden, Callum Turner and Josh O'Connor shaking, not stirring, their way through the three components to the screen tests: stunts, camera presence and dialogue.

The actor chosen will replace Daniel Craig, who took over the role of the spy/well-dressed killer with Casino Royale in 2006.

Perhaps the three actors will be nowhere to be seen, so here are a few more sites Bond fans could visit in London. After all, you only live twice.

The AI-powered nightmare scenario facing Australia’s $4.8trn super system

An artificial intelligence-powered cyberattack coinciding with a severe market crash and a record wave of retirees drawing down their savings would represent the ultimate test for Australia’s $4.8 trillion superannuation system, regulators have warned.

With 2.5 million Australians set to retire over the next decade, the super system is entering an unprecedented drawdown phase, The Australian Financial Review Super and Wealth Summit heard.

RBA warns retirement wave will test Australian pension funds

(Oct 26): Australia’s central bank has warned the nation’s A$4.8 trillion (US$3.4 trillion or RM13.8 trillion) pension industry is facing a fresh set of challenges as millions of people enter retirement over the next decade and funds face cash outflows as people draw down their savings.

The so-called superannuation sector has become a large owner of domestic assets and has historically been a “countercyclical stabilising force”, in times of market stress such as the Covid-19 pandemic, Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Brad Jones told the AFR Super and Wealth Summit in Melbourne on Monday.

Jones said weekly net inflows of A$1 billion-A$2 billion have historically helped the sector absorb stress. He warned that cushion may become less dependable over time as more funds move into net cash-outflow positions as more people retire and draw on their savings. About 2.5 million people are expected to retire over the next decade.

Australian murderer loses bid to eat Vegemite in prison

A convicted murderer serving a life sentence in Australia has lost his bid to overturn a ban on prisoners consuming Vegemite – the salty yeast-based spread that has become a national symbol.

Andre McKechnie argued that the ban, in place since 2006, denied him the right to "enjoy his culture as an Australian".

Authorities in the state of Victoria say inmates may use the strong-smelling paste to disguise contraband substances or to brew alcohol behind bars.

And on Monday, a Supreme Court judge rejected McKechnie's appeal, saying the prisoner's "cultural rights are limited primarily by the fact he has been sentenced to a term of imprisonment".

A convicted killer has failed to overturn a ban on Vegemite in Victoria's prisons.

Andre McKechnie argued his human right to enjoy Australian culture was being infringed.

A Supreme Court judge rejected the case, which gained international attention.

A convicted killer has lost a legal bid to overturn a ban on Vegemite in Victoria's prisons, in a case that made global headlines.

Andre McKechnie, who is being housed in Barwon Prison, argued the ban on Vegemite was unlawful because it denied him his human right to enjoy Australian culture and because he needed it for his wellbeing.

A murderer who claimed a refusal to allow him Vegemite in prison is a breach of his human rights as an Australian has failed to overturn the ban on the polarising spread.

Andre McKechnie sued Victoria’s corrections department after he was refused the salty, yeast-based condiment in prison.

McKechnie claimed the refusal denied him his human right to “enjoy his culture” as an Australian.

“Without being able to consume Vegemite, I feel deprived of being able to practise my Australian culture, sad and disconnected from my family and community,” he told the state’s supreme court.

Jockey hit with 10-meeting suspension over separate incident involving horse that died

Racing Victoria stewards have handed down a delayed ban from the Caulfield Cup – over a week after the race that resulted in the death of Ohope Wins. Stewards launched an inquiry into the tragedy and found it was simply a tragic racing incident.

Jockeys Jye McNeil, Mark Zahra, Rachel King, Jabez Johnston and Ethan Brown were all interviewed – and all were fully exonerated. But stewards have now taken action against another jockey in the race over a separate incident with Ohope Wins.

It was announced on Saturday that Lachlan Neindorf has been suspended for 10 meetings for careless riding. Stewards ruled that Neindorf allowed his mount Starford to shift out towards Ohope Wins near the 2100m mark.
