Singapore Airlines passenger died of cardiac arrest after turbulence, inquest told

A British man who died on board a Singapore Airlines flight suffered a cardiac arrest after the plane was hit by severe turbulence, an inquest has been told.

Geoff Kitchen, from Thornbury in South Gloucestershire, died on 21 May 2024 after the Boeing 777 plane travelling from London Heathrow to Singapore encountered a sudden drop in altitude near the south western region of Myanmar.

The plane was later diverted to Bangkok, Thailand, where the 73-year-old was pronounced dead.

Dr Peter Harrowing, assistant coroner for Avon, said: "I am satisfied that it was the physiological effect of the aircraft turbulence which precipitated the cardiac arrest and ultimately Geoff's demise."

Grandfather died on Singapore Airlines flight as a result of ‘physiological effect’ from turbulence

A grandfather died from heart failure caused by the "physiological effect" of severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight, a coroner has concluded.

Geoff Kitchen was on the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft bound for Singapore when it plunged 178ft in under five seconds after likely being impacted by a "rapidly growing cloud", said an investigation report published this year.

The retired insurance professional suffered heart failure in the traumatic event, which also injured 72 passengers, 51 seriously including the 73-year-old's wife, Linda, who suffered spinal fractures.

The couple from Thornbury near Bristol were embarking on a six-week holiday around Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.

Trip of a lifetime ends in tragedy after Heathrow passenger dies in turbulence

A passenger died after severe turbulence during a long-haul flight from the UK.

Geoff Kitchen, 73, from Thornbury in south Gloucestershire, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on a Singapore Airlines flight from London Heathrow to Singapore.

The incident occurred on May 21, 2024 as the aircraft, a Boeing 777, encountered turbulence over Myanmar and was diverted to Bangkok.

Mr Kitchen, who was travelling with his wife Linda, was pronounced dead at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

Dr Peter Harrowing, assistant coroner for Avon, said: "On the morning of 21 May 2024, Geoff Kitchen, who had a history of coronary artery disease, was a passenger on a commercial flight from London to Singapore.

Macklemore Dropped From Ed Sheeran Tour After Onstage ‘Free Palestine’ Statements

Macklemore has been removed from the rest of Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour after several venues allegedly told the trek’s promoter that they would not allow the rapper to perform. The news came after Macklemore made several onstage statements in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and called for a “free Palestine.”

In an exclusive statement shared with Rolling Stone, Messina Touring Group, promoter of the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, said: “As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates.”

Ex-Auburn coach Bruce Pearl hails Robert Kraft as a hero for banning Macklemore over antisemitic rants

"Robert Kraft is the owner of a business. He has a responsibility as a leader in the community. And when given the opportunity, he did not remain silent. And he went and did something. And you know what? Sometimes actions have consequences, but sometimes inaction is actually worse. "

Former Auburn men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl joined "Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich" to defend New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft after Kraft banned rapper Macklemore from Gillette Stadium.

Pearl, a prominent Jewish voice in college sports, praised Kraft as a "hero and a patriot" for taking a firm stand against antisemitism.

Ed Sheeran’s concerts at Gillette Stadium will look different from what was planned

Instead of an opening act, Ed Sheeran’s Saturday concert at Gillette Stadium will be preceded by a pro-Palestinian protest — not sanctioned by the musician — outside the Foxborough venue.

The nonprofit Massachusetts Peace Action plans to hold the protest from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, ahead of Sheeran’s scheduled 5:30 p.m. performance. Sheeran is also expected to perform at Gillette Stadium on Friday as part of his Loop Tour.

The protest is in response to Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft’s role in the decision to bar Macklemore from performing at the venue after the rapper made pro-Palestinian remarks during a Sept. 5 concert in New Jersey, said Executive Director Brian Garvey.

ASX 200 LIVE: Australia employment rate increases in August, jobless rate rises to 4.6 per cent

Oil prices lower as Iran open to diplomatic end to war

Jobs numbers ‘final nail in the coffin’ for RBA rate rise

The Australian sharemarket is lower after unemployment rose, in line with losses in New York as oil surged back above $US100 a barrel and bond yields spiked higher.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 73 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 8692.70 at 2.15pm on Thursday. Two of the 11 sectors were in the green, led by energy.

New data published on Thursday showed the unemployment rate in Australia rose to 4.6 per cent in August despite the economy adding 39,500 jobs.

The S&P 500 slipped 0.8 per cent, and the Nasdaq dropped 1.1 per cent overnight, retreating from recent highs as the yield on US 10-year bonds leapt to 5.11 per cent.

Unemployment rises to 4.6%, but a September interest rate hike still looks likely

Unemployment rose to 4.6% in August, new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show. That’s the highest it’s been since November 2021.

Since the start of this year, Australia’s unemployment rate has increased by 0.5 percentage points, up from 4.1% last December.

However, that upward trend appears unlikely to dissuade the Reserve Bank board from lifting interest rates next week, given the central bank’s recent stern warnings about fighting inflation.

On Tuesday, Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock warned that unemployment may need to rise further to help rein in inflation:

I think [an unemployment rate] between 4.5% and 5% will probably take enough heat out of the labour market that it’ll ease pressure on inflation.

Surprise unemployment jump ahead of RBA’s looming rates call

The unemployment rate has unexpectedly risen after 6000 people lost their full-time jobs in August, but it’s unlikely to spare Australians from another rate hike next week.

New data released on Thursday morning by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the jobless rate rose to 4.6 per cent for last month, up from 4.5 per cent in July.

The jump in unemployment will factor into the RBA’s next interest rate decision, to be handed down on Tuesday. Peter Rae

It is the highest unemployment level recorded in Australia since the end of the pandemic.

Economists had expected the figure to remain steady at 4.5 per cent.

Prince Harry Returns to U.S. Just Weeks After Leaving $15 Million California Mansion for New Life in U.K.

Prince Harry has made a swift return to the U.S., just weeks after he and Meghan Markle relocated their family from California to the U.K.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who established their American home base in Montecito after purchasing a $14.65 million mansion in 2020, arrived in the U.K. on Aug. 26 with their children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5.

Their arrival came just one week after reports emerged that the family was preparing to trade their longtime California base for Harry's home country.

Despite making the move across the Atlantic, Harry and Meghan are reportedly searching for a U.K. property that bears a striking resemblance to their sprawling Montecito estate.

AFL appeals board live: Damning new Neale footage may sink last gasp hopes

If this hearing lasts multiple hours, like last night’s did, it will overlap with Brisbane and Fremantle’s naming of their selected sides for Saturday’s game.

If the hearing is still ongoing at 6:20pm AEST when those teams drop, the Lions will name Lachie Neale in their team, despite being suspended by the MRO and upheld by the tribunal.

They will not remove him from the side until after the appeals board’s verdict.

We have seen this happen before with previous AFL and AFLW cases and it always makes for odd reading.

It's crunch time for Brisbane's Lachie Neale as the dual Brownlow Medallist tries to overturn a ban at the AFL Appeal Board so he can play in the grand final against Fremantle.

Neale lost on Tuesday with the AFL Tribunal upholding his ban for striking Hawthorn's Jack Ginnivan.

Now two days before the decider, Neale has his appeal, while we wait for Brisbane and Fremantle to announce their grand final teams later today.

Dolly Parton’s estate in feud with nephew over alleged threats

Dolly Parton's nephew has been accused of threatening to commit violence and destroy his aunt’s legacy and business empire, court documents show.

Parton's estate alleges Bryan Seaver sent threatening messages to his She's Alive organisation, which manages the late singer's professional property and business.

A restraining order has been lodged, aiming to stop Mr Seaver from talking with or being near She’s Alive employees, attorneys and business partners.

The estate of country music icon Dolly Parton has accused her nephew of threatening to commit violence and destroy his aunt’s legacy and business empire, court documents show.

A filing lodged in a Nashville court on Tuesday, local time, also asked a judge to keep Bryan Seaver away from the employees and dealings of She's Alive, Parton's professional property and business.

Restraining order against Dolly Parton's nephew granted after his firing

A Nashville judge has granted Dolly Parton's longtime manager a restraining order against the singer's nephew, Bryan Seaver, who is accused of threatening those managing her business assets for financial gain.

Davidson County Chancellor I'Ashea Myles on Sept. 23 granted She's Alive LLC's motion for a restraining order, ordering Seaver to stay 1,000 feet away from anyone working for She's Alive or those who may have a business relationship with the company, which was created by Parton to oversee her professional property trust and legacy.

Seaver also cannot communicate with people associated with She's Alive or interfere with its business relationships.

Seaver, who had been entrusted with announcing his aunt's Aug. 25 death, and his security company were named in a Sept. 22 motion for a temporary restraining order. The filing alleged he threatened "to inflict reputational and economic harm on all of those around Ms. Parton who are now entrusted with protecting her brand."

Dolly Parton estate in feud with nephew over alleged ‘warfare’ threats

Star’s estate granted restraining order against Bryan Seaver, who publicly announced Parton’s death, over alleged intimidation that he denies

The estate of the late Dolly Parton is involved in a dispute with the country music star’s nephew and former head of security, and was granted a restraining order against him and his private security company amid allegations of threats.

Bryan Seaver was responsible for Parton’s security, and was tasked with announcing her death on 25 August with a video, “something Dolly asked of me years ago”, he said.

But since the singer died, her estate, which is run by Parton’s manager Danny Nozell, has reportedly fired Seaver from his security job, and has now alleged that he made “relentless” threats against Nozell and others.

Netflix stock is getting shredded — and Google's YouTube may be the reason

While Netflix (NFLX) execs sit in their ivory tower licking their wounds for not closing the deal for Warner Bros. (WBD) — which will now officially end up going to Paramount (PSKY) — investors are left with uncertainty on the streamer's future growth.

Netflix stock is down 11% in September, per Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data, bringing the year-to-date drop to 23%. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) is up 13% on the year.

Although Wells Fargo's cautious comments on Netflix have gotten attention this week, it's a new note from HSBC of all places that we think is of greater concern to the remaining Netflix bulls.

"YouTube has been rapidly expanding its living room footprint, having captured a record 14.2% share of US TV time (+80bps year over year) this July," HSBC analyst Mohammed Khallouf wrote. "This momentum is increasingly coming at the direct expense of Netflix as its share fell to a multi-year low of 7.8% (-100bps year over year). YouTube has been benefiting, in our view, from a declining reception to NFLX's original content. Near-term recovery in engagement looks unlikely."
