How Magda Szubanski faced her darkest days with humour

Magda Szubanski has spent much of the past 40 years making Australia laugh.

But for 18 months, she has been facing a brutal stage four cancer diagnosis – and the fact it could return.

Behind the scenes, Magda has been facing a brutal stage four cancer diagnosis – and the fact that it could return. 60 Minutes

“The great news is I’m in deep remission from my cancer,” the 65-year-old told 60 Minutes in her first interview since revealing her diagnosis.

It’s a milestone worth celebrating, though Szubanski knows remission doesn’t mean she is in the clear. The median survival rate is 8.5 years

    60 Minutes: Sept 20

    The Magic of Magda
There are many reasons we love Magda Szubanski. There’s the comic genius and the cast of outrageous characters she has brought to life over the last 40 years. Then there’s her endless care and compassion, her razor-sharp wit, and her unfailing ability to laugh at herself. Now you can add courage to the list. She has shown plenty to reach remission in her gruelling 18-month battle with stage-four blood cancer. Along the way she dug deep, learning much about herself and the experiences that have helped to shape her life. Now, in her first interview since her diagnosis, Magda tells all. And as Nine’s Tracy Grimshaw discovers, while the Aussie icon has lost none of her humour or zest for life, she is more reflective, raw and unfiltered than ever.

Developmental xenocortication using human-derived organoids in mice

The inaccessibility of human brain tissue limits the study of human development and function, a challenge that human stem-cell-derived neural models are beginning to address1,2. Transplantation of neural organoids into rodent hosts enables the in vivo study of aspects of human neurodevelopment and circuit function, alongside behavioural phenotyping of the host animals. However, spatial limitations and competition with host circuits constrain the integration of neural organoids, which is critical for studying disease. Here we establish a transplantation platform using a genetic strategy to effectively deplete glutamatergic neurons from mouse neocortex and hippocampus (apallial) and neonatally engraft the cortical cavity with human stem-cell-derived cortical organoids (hCO) to generate xenocortical mice. This leads to robust graft growth with hCOs occupying most of the cortical volume and generating a diversity of human cortical cell types, including layer 5 extratelencephalic projection neurons. Human cortical neurons integrate with the mouse nervous system, and in vivo cortical graft-wide calcium imaging and electrophysiological analyses revealed patterns of organized activity resembling developing circuits. Behavioural analyses of apallial and xenocortical mice revealed broadly preserved locomotion alongside selective differences in limb coordination and altered organization of spontaneous behaviour. Lastly, this platform enabled behavioural readouts in a model of injury to developing human cortical cells. We envision that xenocortication will be useful for obtaining circuit- and behaviour-level readouts using human neurons to study neurodevelopment, model disease and develop therapeutics.

Part-human part-mouse brain developed in science breakthrough

Neuroscientists in the US have successfully adapted mice to have functioning human cells inside their own brains.

The researchers hope that potential treatments for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental diseases that only occur in humans could now be tested on the laboratory rodents.

While mice with brains that are partly human might sound like a Kafkaesque experiment, the scientists said these are not "mice that think like humans".

The animals are genetically engineered – and surgically altered – so that some of their brain tissue is human.

The scientists said their work, published in the journal Nature, was carried out with independent ethical scrutiny.

The Dockers achieved a rare feat. Now, history is on their side in the GF

Check out how teams who stage preliminary final comebacks fare in deciders

IT IS often said they are the hardest games to win, and Fremantle made its preliminary final task even more challenging on Friday night.

So, what does history say about teams that recover from hefty deficits in preliminary finals?

The Dockers trailed at every break at the SCG on Friday night before surging past Sydney in an enthralling clash to book the club's second ever Grand Final appearance.

Since the finals format was introduced in 2000, Freo is just the seventh team to win a preliminary final after trailing at three-quarter time.

Thousands of seats on flights added for AFL grand final after Lions victory

Major airlines have added thousands of extra seats to help fans attend the AFL grand final next weekend, following the Brisbane Lions’ victory on Saturday night.

The Lions advanced to the grand final after defeating Hawthorn in a dramatic nine-point win, which resulted in Hawks fans throwing bottles at umpires.

They will play the Fremantle Dockers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next Saturday, after the Dockers beat the Sydney Swans by 12 points on Friday night.

If the Lions win, it will be their third finals victory in a row after defeating the Geelong Cats last year and Sydney the year before. They also made the finals in 2023, losing by four points to Collingwood.

Fremantle’s night of nights as they overrun Sydney and seal spot in second AFL grand final

Minor premiers to meet Hawthorn or Brisbane in grand final at the MCG

The Fremantle Football Club have never had a night like this. They’ve never been forced this deep down the well to win a big game. They’ve never had so much thrown at them. They’ve never been in such a hostile environment. They’ve never, in a big game, flipped so quickly from a meek, nervy, fumbly team to an offensive powerhouse.

All year they have demonstrated that they can run out games well, and that they can slam on a lot of goals in a short amount of time. They were awful here in the first half. But they showed signs of life after the main break. Some hard-fought stoppage wins culminated in a superb Jye Amiss goal, before Luke Jackson marked a dump kick and converted from 50m. But Sydney cancelled the two goals out immediately.

WAFL Grand Final teams: Four ins for Cox-less Peel as Claremont remain unchanged

Minor premiers Peel Thunder have made four changes for Sunday’s Sullivan Logistics WAFL decider against Claremont at Optus Stadium as they hunt their second premiership in three years.

The Thunder have welcomed back AFL-listed pair – winger Nathan O’Driscoll and defender Brandon Walker – from Dockers duties, while key forward Corey Tregenza has been included after recovering from an ankle injury.

Both O’Driscoll and Walker played in Fremantle’s Qualifying Final loss to Hawthorn, with Walker injuring his ankle and O’Driscoll getting dropped.

Tough nut Tristan Bryce is another big inclusion, returning for his first senior appearance since Round 11 after a long-term hamstring injury.

FOLLOW LIVE: Peel battle Claremont for WAFL glory

Peel Thunder have been the team to beat in the WAFL for much of the season but the Tigers have been right on their tail and they now meet in the grand final.

Peel will have a number of Dockers-listed players out there but Brennan Cox was withdrawn with the defender potentially suiting up for the AFL decider.

But Claremont have plenty of stars of their own and they will be hungry to taste the ultimate success.

Brandon Walker has been given the job on son-of-a-gun Zac Mainwaring.

Mainwaring has been a breakout player for the Tigers this season and was even in the mix for an AFL call ahead of the mid-season draft.

Peel Thunder’s Grand Final Selection Squeeze

Peel Thunder coach Adam Read admits when his team is announced for Sunday’s Sullivan Logistics WAFL Grand Final there will be players who are left heartbroken.

Read is on the verge of his second premiership as coach of Peel but knows the tough calls which will have to be made.

“Since I have taken this job, I have gone through every coaching course you could imagine and I don’t think it teaches you about how you are supposed to have those tough conversations on selection,” Read said.

The availability of Fremantle Dockers defender Brennan Cox is a bonus for the minor premiers who will start up to 14 AFL-listed players against Claremont.

Neale set to cop one-game ban, miss grand final

Brisbane star Lachie Neale is set to miss the grand final after copping a one-game suspension from the MRO.

SEN is reporting that Neale landed a gut punch on Hawthorn’s Jack Ginnivan during the match, which will result in the ban.

The incident occurred during the first quarter, with Neale stepping in as Ginnivan wrestled teammate Eric Hipwood after a collision.

The MRO has graded the punch medium impact, leading to the one-game ban.

Brisbane will certainly appeal the suspension, but if it stands, he will miss the game and a chance to win a third-straight flag.

They will attempt to argue the impact down to low, in all likelihood.

BREAKING: Lions’ Grand Final bombshell as superstar facing shock suspension

Brisbane star Lachie Neale is facing a suspension that that would see him miss the grand final and mark the end of his Lions career.

The Lions have been told that Neale has received a one-game ban for a first-quarter stomach punch to Hawthorn’s Jack Ginnivan in Saturday night’s thrilling preliminary final.
