Lucas races clock as Saturday deadline looms for comeback call

Dylan Lucas’ brave bid to return from a fractured ankle suffered in Round 21 has given Knights coach Justin Holbrook a selection headache he didn't expect to be facing.

Lucas was expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering the gruesome injury against the Roosters on July 24 – a horror night for the club which saw playmaker Dylan Brown do his ACL as well.

But Lucas has defied expectations to put himself in contention for Sunday’s sudden-death semi against the Warriors at Eden Park, with Holbrook praising the forward’s resilience and determination throughout his recovery.

“Everyone trained well. Obviously Dyl Lucas is the one we will see how he pulls up, and we won’t make a decision on him until Saturday,” Holbrook said.

Newcastle coach Justin Holbrook will give Dylan Lucas until the weekend to prove that he is ready to make a stunning return from surgery.

The NSW representative has been sidelined since round 21 after fracturing his ankle and initially written off for the season.

But the Knights' run into the second week of the NRL finals has allowed the back-rower to be in the frame for a return and named a reserve for Sunday's do-or-die clash against the Warriors in Auckland.

Diana's brother says he's 'telling truth' about king's 'monstrous' phone call

Charles Spencer has given his first interview after a week of making explosive claims about Britain's royal family.

The accusations, which are contained in Earl Spencer's new book, have sparked a war of words with Buckingham Palace.

Princess Diana's brother defended himself in the exchange with the BBC, broadcast on Friday evening.

Princess Diana's brother has doubled down on explosive claims about Britain's royal family, insisting he is "telling the truth" and suggesting the king is "embarrassed".

Charles Spencer's numerous bombshell accusations, which are particularly critical of King Charles III, are contained in his soon-to-be-released memoir, excerpts of which have been published this week.

Earl Spencer's Diana book opens old wounds royals would rather forget

The legacy of the shocking death of Diana, Princess of Wales, is still the rawest of wounds for the royals, as demonstrated by the no-holds-barred memoir from her brother Earl Spencer.

It might be almost 30 years ago, but Buckingham Palace's unusually angry rebuttal to the book's allegations of a callous response to his ex-wife's death from the then Prince Charles shows how much this still matters.

That late summer in 1997 was a moment when the Royal Family looked out of touch, lacking in empathy for Diana's loss, and at peril of losing public support, as people laid siege to the palaces with flowers.

Earl Spencer SLATES the king. Charles DESTROYS Spencer. If only Diana were here to click on it | Marina Hyde

It’s a battle for hearts and minds – and TikTok, and the ’Gram. Just as it should be. #royalbeef

Reading the extracts from Earl Spencer’s book about his sister Diana, and the king’s two-footed takedown of it, it’s hard to escape the idea that Spencer and the Windsors are just elite content creators now. This entire thing is basically indistinguishable from a blockbuster influencer war, and I honestly won’t be happy till the king puts out a shade TikTok of him driving round the Sandringham estate in sunglasses captioned: “Threatening to release the receipts but never actually releasing the receipts … kinda chic.” Soundtrack: Mariah Carey’s Obsessed.

Bluster and betrayal: Paul Barry probes how steel tycoon Sanjeev Gupta hoodwinked the powerful

It is difficult to read Paul Barry’s The Big Steal without a mounting sense of outrage, not just at the British businessman Sanjeev Gupta, rightly described as a silver-tongued scoundrel, but at the greedy bankers, gullible journalists, naive politicians and incompetent regulators who allowed this global scam to happen.

Review: The Big Steal: How Steel Tycoon Sanjeev Gupta fooled Australia and the World – Paul Barry (Allen & Unwin)

The story has been meticulously put together by one of Australia’s finest investigative journalists. Barry knows the terrain of corporate skulduggery well, having written two books tracing the rise and fall of that infamous Western Australian pirate Alan Bond.

Mansions, promises, sinking towns: Paul Barry looks at how one man fooled the world

A delusional psychosis of self-entitlement. Is this a diagnosis to be found in psychiatry textbooks? Possibly not, but after reading Paul Barry’s The Big Steal I’m thinking that there’s a sound argument for an entire chapter.

Astonished and appalled, Barry chronicles the implosion of Sanjeev Gupta’s cruel fantasy: that he, and he alone, could save an ageing steel industry from the laws of thermodynamics and corporate governance. The ghastly aftermath of financial, industrial and personal disasters that Gupta has left in his wake will play out for years, and there are creditors beyond counting baying for his hide.

The heartbreaking question Mick Fanning asked his mum after losing three brothers

After three world titles, a shark attack, and the deaths of his three big brothers, the universe has been both generous and unforgiving to the champion surfer.

You really couldn’t script a more perfect moment for meeting Mick Fanning. A blazing sun rises from the watery horizon to the east, throwing golden light onto sandy Coolangatta, while a breezy, briny combo of spray and spit kicks up off the Pacific Ocean sky and into our eyes. A strange hippie woman is dancing and bellowing and smacking clap sticks together on the beach – she’s a regular here, apparently – while fishermen cast for bream off the big black basalt rocks on the headland. Oh, and there’s an old dude nearby smoking a very fat spliff.

Indian Navy Augments Its Submarine Rescue Capability

Commissioned on August 31, INS Nipun significantly augments the Navy’s specialist diving, underwater intervention, salvage, and submarine rescue support capability.

On August 31, India commissioned INS Nipun, the second dedicated Diving Support Vessel (DSV) that serves as the mothership for the two Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs) in service. With this, the Indian Navy crossed a threshold in a critical operational capability – submarine rescue – that has a bearing not just for India but for the entire region.

Submarines are some of the most complex machines in existence and their operation is highly specialized. Submarine rescue takes that to another level and is a forte of a very small group of countries.

Whyalla may make steel again one day. But years of uncertainty could still reshape the town

There is a shock reverberating through the regional South Australian town of Whyalla and its crisis-hit steelworks. This week, administrators KordaMentha and SA Premier Peter Malinauskas jointly announced they would abandon all attempts to restart the steelworks’ blast furnace.

At least 500 workers will lose their jobs, along with 100 people employed through labour-hire arrangements. The future of a further 200 “embedded contractors” remains uncertain.

To be clear, the closure of the blast furnace does not mean the end of the Whyalla steelworks. Efforts remain underway to find a buyer. While primary steelmaking will remain paused for an estimated two to four years, other operations such as mining and steel rolling will continue.

‘Bitterly political’ Albanese move exposed following Whyalla steelworks’ collapse

The loss of hundreds of jobs at the critical South Australia Whyalla steel manufacturing site has left the Labor federal government's Future Made in Australia policy in tatters, writes Nick Cater.

The end of metal production at Whyalla matters far beyond the loss of 600 jobs or the loss of face for Anthony Albanese.

It extinguishes an industrial capability established in World War II, when Australia understood the danger of depending on other countries for the materials on which its security depended.

The Prime Minister recognised the plant’s importance for sovereign capability when he announced a $2.4 billion package to keep it open three months before the 2025 election.

US President Donald Trump says he has struck a deal with Denmark that gives the US "permanent control" over Greenland's security.

Mr Trump said the US would "immediately" begin developing a larger military presence in Greenland, months after he vowed to take the strategic island by force.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says the deal will be signed by the three governments next week, adding the deal "recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity" of Greenland and Denmark.

US President Donald Trump says he has made a deal with Denmark to bolster the US military presence in Greenland after months of threatening to take the island by force from the NATO ally.

US and Denmark reach deal over Greenland's security

The US and Denmark have announced a deal on Greenland's security, resolving a diplomatic dispute sparked by President Donald Trump's threats to seize the territory by force.

Trump said the agreement would grant the US "permanent control over security, and all other needs".

Denmark's Prime Minister said the deal "strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area" but did not address specifics in the agreement that Trump mentioned in a social media post.

The deal comes after months of threats by Trump to "take" Greenland over national security concerns, citing its strategic location for defence purposes and its mineral wealth.

NSW Premier Chris Minns Has Been Referred to the State Police Watchdog

The premier has been referred over claims he’s been pressuring police to suppress “lawful public assemblies” when he doesn’t agree with what’s being voiced.

New South Wales Greens MLC Sue Higginson has referred NSW premier Chris Minns to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, as she considers the NSW Labor leader has “too much influence over police operational decisions”, and she raised particular concern around the state’s top minister’s attempts to suppress “lawful public assemblies”, when he doesn’t agree with their politics.

Consternation around the premier’s attitude toward law enforcement has been spiking, ever since NSW police officers brutalised the participants in the 9 February 2026 anti-Herzog rally on Gadigal land before Sydney Town Hall, but what led Higginson to complain was his interview in The Australian a fortnight ago, as she considers it revealed his “undue influence” over the NSW police.

South Australia anchors Australia’s uranium industry as exploration expands

Australia holds around one-third of the global uranium resources and is the fourth largest global producer of uranium, following Kazakhstan, Canada, and Namibia.

In light of the recent survey by the Minerals Council of Australia signalling a shift in attitudes towards New South Wales’ ban on both uranium mining and nuclear energy, we are now seeing new opportunities continue to develop elsewhere in Australia.

South Australia is currently the sole producer of uranium in Australia, hosting around 89% of the country’s demonstrated resources and 23% of global resources.

Uranium sales out of South Australia have totalled $1.5 billion in 2026, having produced and exported over $12.5 billion worth of uranium oxide concentrate between 2000 and 2026.

Sydney-born teen becomes Chelsea’s youngest ever play but Alonso’s side suffer Brentford rout

Chelsea’s winless run in the Premier League has stretched to three matches as Brentford ran out deserved 3-0 victors at the Gtech Community Stadium, a game which saw 16-year-old Sydney-born sensation Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli become the club’s youngest ever player.

The midfielder was handed his Premier League debut in the 86th minute, becoming the first player born in 2010 to play in the league, while at 16 years and 225 days, overtaking Jody Morris’ previously held record.

The teenager, who was born in Australia, holds a French passport and English citizenship. He travelled to Sydney with Chelsea in the pre-season, where Xabi Alonso hinted very clearly just how highly he rated the academy product.

Chelsea news: Academy trio Nicoll-Jazuli, Watson and Subuloye called up for first-team training

Academy prospects Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Reggie Watson and Tayo Subuloye have been training with Chelsea's first team this week before Friday's Premier League meeting with Brentford.

Watson, 16, made his debut in last week's 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds. However, Nicoll-Jazuli, also 16, and 18-year-old Subuloye are yet to make their senior competitive debuts, despite featuring in pre-season friendlies under Xabi Alonso.

The trio were notably absent from Chelsea under-21s' EFL Trophy defeat by Wycombe Wanderers in midweek, having instead trained with the senior squad.

It remains to be seen whether Alonso will include any of them in his plans for the Blues' final match before the international break.

Canterbury-Bankstown Council has voted in favour to ban smart glasses from its leisure centres and pools, in a motion passed on Tuesday.

The ban would allow staff to eject people with smart glasses from centres in the local government area.

A Sydney council has moved to ban smart glasses from local leisure centres and pools, citing concerns the devices could be exploited by "perverts and paedophiles".

This week, councillors from the City of Canterbury Bankstown unanimously passed a motion banning them from its five council-operated leisure and aquatic centres over their potential for misuse.
