What you need to know about Iran today, with Laura Tingle

Hi, I'm ABC global affairs editor Laura Tingle, and I'm in Dubai.

This is the last of my daily updates. From Monday, ABC News Middle East correspondent Matt Doran will be taking over from Jerusalem.

Iran war live updates: For the latest news on the Middle East crisis, read our blog.

Iran has increasingly been turning the war with the United States and Israel into an economic war based on oil. You will have seen the pictures on the news of burning oil refineries and oil tankers across the Gulf. Countries from Kuwait to Iraq have had to wind back production because they are running out of storage space for their oil.

What we know on the 14th day of the US and Israel’s war with Iran

Oil prices are still surging – and stocks falling – as the US-Israel war with Iran nears the end of a second week, after Tehran’s new supreme leader vowed to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed. Global leaders’ attempts to reassure markets and release emergency oil reserves are yet to reverse those trends.

Casualties are mounting, with a French soldier in Iraq and two academics in Lebanon among those killed in the past day as well as a US Air Force refuelling tanker carrying at least five crew lost over western Iraq.

Israel, Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah continued trading strikes overnight into Friday.

Here’s a wrap of what we covered in the last 24 hours.

In an update on its Telegram channel this hour, the Israeli Defence Force has claimed it struck an “additional Iranian nuclear program site” during its waves of strikes in Tehran in the last few days.

“The ‘Taleghan’ compound was used to advance … developing nuclear weapons,” the IDF said, claiming Iran had tried to rehabilitate Taleghan after it was last struck in October 2024.

Empty floors at Atlassian HQ a sign of things gone awry

Whether folly or far-sighted, Atlassian’s decision five years ago to build a 40-storey headquarters in the heart of Sydney is being tested by an artificial intelligence revolution wreaking havoc on the software sector.

The Nasdaq-listed software firm has taken a lease over almost the entirety of the $1.45 billion tower’s office space, grouped into habitats of four levels each. A hostel takes up five floors at the bottom. But in the midst of a round of job cuts, Atlassian is looking to sub-lease more than a third of its space.

Billionaire Atlassian chief executive Mike Cannon-Brookes has staked the future of his company on AI, slashing 1600 jobs via email in a move to position the software giant for the wave of disruption tearing through Australia’s white-collar workforce.

A sombre Cannon-Brookes issued a video message to staff 20 minutes before the company axed 10 per cent of staff globally, including 480 roles in Australia, on Thursday, prompting major questions for Atlassian and fear in the wider economy already dealing with rising inflation and surging oil prices.

Afterpay’s parent company Block this month slashed more than 4000 jobs in the name of artificial intelligence, joining the likes of Australian logistics software company WiseTech, Amazon, Pinterest and Crowdstrike.

‘Devastating blow’: Atlassian lays off 1,600 workers ahead of AI push

Layoffs to affect 10% of workforce amid Australian company’s restructuring plan to push into artificial intelligence and enterprise sales

Software giant Atlassian has announced it is laying off about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 1,600 positions, and replacing its chief technology officer as it restructures to invest further in artificial intelligence.

More than 900 affected positions were involved in software research and development, a spokesperson said. Most of Atlassian’s employees work in software engineering and design, accounting for over 50% of its 13,813 full-time workforce in June 2025.

About 640 affected employees are in North America, 480 in Australia and 250 in India, with the remainder spread across Japan, the Philippines, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, according to the spokesperson.

A man rammed his vehicle into a Michigan synagogue and drove through a hallway on Thursday before he was shot dead by security staff, officials said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield township, a prosperous suburb in Oakland county about 25 miles north-west of downtown Detroit.

The FBI is investigating the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community”, Jennifer Runyan, special agent in charge of the Detroit office, said in an evening press conference. But she said it was too soon to identify the suspect or specify a motive for the attack and said the temple remained an active crime scene.

Washington: A man is dead after ramming his truck into a synagogue in Michigan, and a fatal university shooting in Virginia is being treated as an act of terrorism, amid heightened fears and a string of attacks globally during the US and Israel’s war with Iran.

Children were at preschool inside the Temple Israel Synagogue in a Detroit suburb when the man crashed his vehicle through the doors and into the hallway. He was killed in a confrontation with security personnel.

One of the security agents was hit by the vehicle and hospitalised. No other people inside synagogue were hurt, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, but as many as 30 first responders were also taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US

Experts warn younger people not to dismiss symptoms such as rectal bleeding as diagnoses rise for those under 50

Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in the US for people under 50, according to a new analysis from the American Cancer Society, prompting both experts and those in that age group with the disease to warn others to take certain symptoms seriously.

Becca Lynch, who works in cyber security in Denver, Colorado, was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer last year, when she was just 29. At first, she assumed her symptoms couldn’t be anything serious: “I chalked it up to stress,” she said.

How Michigan hospitals are responding to alarming trend in colorectal cancer

Following a routine colonoscopy in January last year, St. Clair Shores resident Britta Wofford learned doctors found a mass in her colon that they suspected was cancer.

They biopsied it, and they were right. Wofford, a wife and the mother of three young girls, was diagnosed with Stage I colon cancer. She was only 45.

"We recently acquired unverified information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran," according to the alert distributed at the end of February. CrossFit Open Workout 26.2 Analysis

The second workout of the 2026 CrossFit Open, presented by Air National Guard, featured alternating dumbbell snatches, dumbbell overhead walking lunges, pull-ups, chest-to-bar pull-ups, and muscle-ups. The muscle-ups were on the rings, which is a change compared to the bar muscle-ups we saw during the past two Opens. The workout had a stiff 15-minute time cap, and athletes who did not finish posted scores of how many reps they completed along with tiebreak times.

There were some obvious similarities between this workout and Open Workout 25.2, which also included these pulling movements with increasing difficulty, but paired with a different set of supporting movements.

Friday the 13th Part VII Should Have Been the Model for the Franchise

Friday the 13th: The New Blood showed a new direction for Jason, a direction that was ultimately ignored.

By 1988, Jason Voorhees was a shambling corpse without purpose, both literally and metaphorically. Paramount Studios, who released the original 1980 film by director Sean S. Cunningham and writer Victor Miller, had ordered Jason’s death for the third entry, 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. When that too proved a money-maker, Paramount allowed the franchise to continue, first by putting another person behind the mask for 1985’s A New Beginning and then resurrecting Jason as a zombie for the comedic, self-aware Jason Lives (1986).

Tina Shepherd’s Turn Shows What Friday 13th Could Have Become

When Jennifer Banko’s Tina Shepherd appears early in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, she brings telekinesis into a series built on a single, lethal presence. That pivot — a direct clash between Tina and Jason Voorhees — offered a new path the franchise did not follow, even as studio choices and prior sequels reshaped Jason’s role.

The New Blood opens on flashbacks and then introduces young Tina Shepherd, a blond child played by Jennifer Banko, whose telekinetic powers and an abusive parent echo another famous cinematic teenager. The story sets Tina against Jason Voorhees, moving beyond the pure slasher setup and putting a named, human figure at the emotional center. That human detail — Tina’s powers and history — is the concrete change the film stages for the characters and for viewers.

LIVE UPDATES: US tanker aircraft crashes; More than 3 million Iranians displaced; Warships to escort oil supplies, says US official

Welcome to our live rolling coverage of the conflict in the Middle East, this Friday March 13.

The US Central Command says a rescue operation has been launched after the loss of a military refuelling plane in "friendly airspace" over Iraq.

A top Trump administration official says the US Navy will soon start escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

New footage has emerged of Iran's secretive underground "missile tunnels", where the regime is suspected of keeping attack boats and weaponry away from surface attacks.

There are fears that multiple attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz could spark an oil slick ecological disaster, and whispers are growing that Israel will begin a ground operation in Lebanon.

US Central Command officials say ‘incident occurred in friendly airspace during Operation Epic Fury’

Pentagon tells lawmakers Iran war costs top $11.3bn – but true price unknown

A US military refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq on Thursday, in an incident US Central Command said involved another aircraft but was not the result of hostile or friendly fire.

The United States has surged a large number of aircraft into the Middle East to take part in operations against Iran.

In a statement, US Central Command said it was carrying out rescue efforts after the US KC-135 refueling aircraft went down. The second aircraft landed safely.

Wielka Iga Świątek, dwa krecze i "mecz roku"! To ominęło cię w nocy w Indian Wells

Teraz Świątek miała szansę znów nieco zmniejszyć stratę do Sabalenki. Musiała jednak pokonać Czeszkę Karolinę Muchovą. Tak też się stało i Świątek zgarnęła 95 punktów. Polka ma w tym momencie 7413 punktów i znów 2827 mniej od Białorusinki.

The PS Plus Games Catalog is getting Space Marine 2 and Persona 5 Royal in March

Sony has announced its latest additions to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. While they might not top last month's introduction of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Extra and Premium subscribers are still getting access to some notable games.

In March, the new additions include Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (PS5), one of Engadget's picks for the Best Games of 2024, and Persona 5 Royal (PS5 and PS4). The PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal – Ultimate Edition, the complete version of one of Atlus' most popular RPGs, will also be available alongside a collection of other fun additions.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a third-person action game reminiscent of Gears of War, but set in Games Workshop's elaborate Warhammer 40,000 universe. If you're a fan of the larger franchise, Space Marine 2 is well worth a look, especially with a third entry on the way, but the game is also a solid option if you're just looking for a new co-op game to try with friends.
