ChatGPT goes after Claude’s business edge with new product drive

Anthropic has stolen OpenAI’s thunder in 2026, but with new product rollouts, the ChatGPT pioneer is fighting back and big Australian customers are on board.

Gilbert + Tobin chief executive Sam Nickless is well aware of the huge risks involved if the firm’s lawyers rely on hallucinating artificial intelligence models to help build their cases, but he is all in on the technology when it comes to using its tools to run the practice.

The firm has been flagged by ChatGPT maker OpenAI as one of the AI giant’s most plugged-in Australian clients amid a spate of major releases, and Nickless says he has just finished using its Codex autonomous AI agent tool to power through a previously laborious aspect of appraisals for the firm’s 112 partners.

Runs your computer while you’re at lunch: ChatGPT for work just dropped

OpenAI has released a turbocharged version of ChatGPT built to automate work tasks, analyse data and create documents, presentations and apps, schedule recurring tasks, and even tackle projects while you’re away from the desk.

The new agent, called ChatGPT Work, is built to plug into users’ existing workflow and gather information across popular work apps Gmail, Slack, Teams, Google Drive, calendars, and more to create finished materials.

Users can go beyond refining prompts to producing reports, building campaign briefs, meeting agendas from Slack messages, and creating interactive dashboards, apps and websites.

“For many folks around the world, for almost a billion users, it’s going to move beyond answering questions to actually getting real work done, and that’s a big shift in how people think about ChatGPT,” OpenAI product marketing executive Sahil Punamia said in a briefing call.

Alone Australia’s new season is ‘the polar opposite’ of what we’ve seen before

For its fourth season, SBS’s survival reality contest Alone Australia went to the ends of the earth in search of a fresh challenge – and not just metaphorically speaking.

“I would say this is quite literally the polar opposite of anything we’ve done before,” says executive producer Riima Daher of the show’s relocation to the Arctic Circle. “So many familiar features of the survival game are still there, so much of the psychological game is still there. But we basically flipped it on its head to take southern-hemisphere survivors up to the northern hemisphere to see what happens.”

WA survivalist Jasper Harvey heads to Finland for season four of SBS’s hit show Alone Australia

When Jasper Harvey, a 24 year-old permaculture practitioner and educator from WA’s South West, decided to apply for the latest season of the hit reality series Alone Australia, he had no idea just how far from home he’d end up.

This year, SBS transplanted 10 brave survivalists — Harvey amongst them — to the wild and spectacularly beautiful area of Sapmi in Finland.

It’s a spectacular place. A place where bears, wolves and reindeer roam freely; where the northern lights shine across frozen subzero wilderness.

It’s also a heck of a long way from Margaret River. And for Harvey, who had never seen snow or ice before — let alone had to live in it for weeks at a time — the Arctic Circle was quite the adjustment.

Rob Irwin offers Swift $4k act amid zoo crisis

Wildlife warrior Robert Irwin has thrown a quintessentially Australian suggestion into the ring for newlyweds Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce: a luxurious honeymoon at Australia Zoo’s Crocodile Hunter Lodge.

The A-list couple, who recently tied the knot in New York City, are now being wooed Down Under with promises of kangaroos and five-star accommodation, with prices starting from $949 per night.

The 22-year-old conservationist made his pitch to Access Hollywood, highlighting the unique appeal of the Queensland retreat.

“Honeymoon is on the table. I literally have a five-star luxury accommodation, The Crocodile Hunter Lodge, at Australia Zoo,” Robert enthused.

“You’ve got an infinity pool looking over a paddock full of kangaroos. If that doesn’t say honeymoon, I don’t know what does.”

Robert Irwin suggests Taylor and Travis bring their honeymoon to Australia

Robert Irwin has a honeymoon proposition for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, and we have to admit, it’s not a bad idea.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Irwin joked that the newlyweds should head Down Under for a stay at The Crocodile Hunter Lodge on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Robert Irwin isn’t just hosting the Logies this year, he’s also hoping to host Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce on their honeymoon.  Getty Images for SiriusXM

“Well, I mean it was between Australia Zoo and Madison Square Garden, you know, it’s a long flight, it’s alright, I don’t blame them,” Irwin joked of the newlyweds’ New York City nuptials.

Iran threatens to block more trade routes as US launches fresh strikes

Iran has threatened to block further trading routes in the region, as the US launched a fresh wave of strikes on military targets.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the Strait of Hormuz would remain shut until the US ended its "acts of aggression". They also threatened to close off other regional oil and gas export channels.

The warning came as the US military's Central Command (Centcom) said it had carried out drone, air and navy strikes on Iran on Wednesday morning, following another seven-hour operation overnight.

Fresh hostilities between the US and Iran in recent days have served to underscore the strategic importance of the Strait to the global economy.

‘Grasping at straws’: Trump’s Hormuz toll thought bubble didn’t last long – but the ramifications will

Donald Trump’s preposterous proposal to take control of the Strait of Hormuz and charge a 20 per cent toll for the privilege of crossing safely lasted all of 24 hours.

It was always a non-starter – for one thing, a 20 per cent charge on the value of a ship’s cargo was a silly number, plucked from nowhere. It would have added about $US16 to the cost of a barrel of oil overnight, according to analysts.

Trump now says the US will protect the strait but Gulf countries that heavily depend on it – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain – will invest more in the US to cover the costs of that protection.

Labor takes a stand on data centre rules and AI copyright

Anthony Albanese says AI companies will not be able to use Australian books, music, art or news to train AI "without the artist's control". (AAP: Dan Himbrechts)

A new set of standards for artificial intelligence will provide clear rules for data centres, forcing them to minimise water usage and underwrite or supply their own power.

Anthony Albanese vows that AI companies will not be able to use Australian books, music, art or news to train AI "without the artist's control".

The prime minister will seek agreement from state premiers and territory chief ministers over the new set of standards at a national cabinet meeting next month.

What Albanese didn’t say about AI and IR is the real concern

Much of the action in determining Labor’s position will be on the ALP National Conference floor next week.

The distance between Western Australia’s Pilbara and the University of Sydney is about 3600 kilometres.

Yet it’s worth thinking about the connection between Thursday’s landmark industrial action at BHP’s Port Hedland iron ore operations and Wednesday’s headland speech on artificial intelligence by Anthony Albanese at the nation’s oldest university campus.

The Odyssey review – Nolan goes god-tier with breathtaking epic of men, monsters and moral metamorphosis

Doing full justice to the Homeric legend, Christopher Nolan amasses an epic cast to convey the true cost of war with film-making of thrilling ambition

A classicist’s verdict: soulful hero flatters our times as women and nuance pushed overboard

Christopher Nolan reinvents the Homeric legend as a colossal origin-myth story of postwar disillusion, an epic ordeal of anguish witnessed by the dead and presided over by capricious deities who participate on almost equal terms with the humans. It speaks to the generational pain of PTSD; plenty of soldiers come home in person after any war promptly enough, but arriving back to their prewar state emotionally or spiritually can take years or decades and may never happen at all. The invisible odyssey of anguish is punctuated by flashback episodes, hallucinations, confrontations with the arbitrary gods of dysfunction. And all the time the spouses and children cannot move on with their lives.

The Odyssey has been making headlines for months – so what’s the movie actually like?

Christopher Nolan has a way with a time paradox. Not content with constructing narratives that run backwards – or whatever was meant to be happening in 2020 sci-fi thriller Tenet – his big-budget adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey gambles that he can take one of the oldest stories in Western culture and make it feel new.

Drums pound, eager listeners lean forward in torchlight, and a bard (Travis Scott) summons up the figure of a man trying to get home, the long way round. That man is Odysseus (Matt Damon), Greece’s craftiest warrior, on his way back from the Trojan War, while his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) waits patiently and his son Telemachus (Tom Holland) seeks him in turn.

Clinics in Ultimo, Castle Hill, Sans Souci and Dural are among the Sydney general practices where personal medical information has been stolen, including diagnostic and pathology results recorded at the clinics, and consultation notes and referral letters held by the practices. Rudd fears China may move to seize Taiwan in 2028

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd fears Chinese President Xi Jinping may underestimate US resolve to defend Taiwan and move to take the strategic Pacific island democracy by force as early as 2028.

Speaking to the Ezra Klein podcast in his new role as chief executive of leading foreign policy think tank Asia Society, Rudd described a dangerous window in two years’ time if an overconfident Xi, 73, viewed the confluence of presidential elections in the United States and Taiwan as a “unique opportunity”.
