Armie Hammer Film 'Citizen Vigilante' Banned in Germany, Uwe Boll Says

Action thriller “Citizen Vigilante,” starring Armie Hammer, has been banned in Germany for its extreme violence and alleged anti-migrant message, according to director Uwe Boll. The film, billed as a modern-day riff on “Death Wish,” is being released in the U.S. on Friday by Quiver.

“The rating system refused to give us a rating [in Germany], so now you can only watch it if you bring in a Blu-ray from Austria or Switzerland,” Boll told the Daily Telegraph. “And I think they did that on purpose. It was a deliberate censorship decision. I hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.”

Germany bans action movie ‘Citizen Vigilante’ for depicting migrants as criminals

The story also criticises elements of the justice system for leniency toward offenders.

The German film ratings board FSK has refused to grant any age classification to the action thriller Citizen Vigilante, directed by Uwe Boll and starring Armie Hammer. Without a rating, the film cannot legally be shown in cinemas, sold on physical media, or streamed on major platforms in Germany.

The movie follows a wealthy protagonist who turns vigilante after his mother is murdered by criminals, many portrayed as migrants.

It draws inspiration from real German cases, including a 2016 Hamburg gang rape in which perpetrators received lenient sentences and some media coverage expressed sympathy for them.

Citizen Vigilante — Uwe Boll [Review]

Before diving into any of the specific details of Citizen Vigilante, let’s get straight into what the film actually is: racist, xenophobic, ethnocentrist, alt-right agitprop manufactured to piss off the “woke Left,” which is exact language used at one point in the narrative. Bravo, Uwe Boll. Anders Breivik would be proud.

Armie Hammer, fresh off Controversy Row (is he even allowed to leave?), portrays a stoic vigilante in a nondescript Eastern European setting. He hunts down people of color and migrant evildoers in the name of a “justice” that victims of rape and assault were denied by the legal system. If you’re skeptical that this reflects the film’s actual narrative framework, don’t worry: Citizen Vigilante — replete with nauseating camerawork, erratic editing, and atrocious dialogue — hammers into our skulls almost immediately that “migrant attacks are on the rise,” so says a news anchor. You also aren’t supposed to doubt that the mysterious European vigilante taking on “these criminals” is a godsend, that “we need someone like him over here in America,” at least according to a man on a TikTok-adjacent reel. And this sentiment does not waver, so strap in.
