NRL Late Mail Round 16: Dolphins lose Katoa; Tino rested

All eyes will be on the State of Origin stars this weekend as the game's biggest names look to back up following Wednesday's clash at the MCG.

Titans skipper Tino Fa'asuamaleaui will be rested this weekend as will Penrith's Origin trio Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Brian To'o.

At the Warriors, Blues prop Mitch Barnett will take his place against the Cowboys but Kurt Capewell will be rested.

See all the late mail, official team news and updates for Round 16 of the 2026 NRL Telstra Premiership competition.

Titans: Josh Hannay has confirmed centre Jojo Fifita will play against the Panthers but has chosen to rest captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui after an emotional Origin appearance following the passing of his father Fereti last weekend. Klese Haas will start in the front row in Fa'asuamaleaui's place with Sam Verrills added to the six-man bench.

Live: Dolphins superstar sidelined for clash with Tigers

Newcastle back rower Asu Kepaoa is sent off during a NSW Cup game for an alleged homophobic slur, with the match review committee to review the incident on Monday.

Meanwhile, in the NRL, Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa is missing for the Dolphins' showdown with the Tigers due to a knee injury, while Kulikefu Finefeuiaki is the only one of their five Origin players backing up.

Later, the Panthers are on the Gold Coast to face the Titans, before the Bulldogs take on Manly.

Recently, I was sitting in the 24/7 library at ANU, watching a viral Senate estimates clip on my small laptop screen. In this clip, our interim vice-chancellor revealed that the catastrophic implosion of ANU management over the past year had cost the university a mammoth $100 million in reputational costs.

Whilst watching, I also noticed in the corner of my eye a student, wrapped in their jacket, asleep on one of the couches in the library. I left for the evening, having finished my work.

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have uncovered how plants protect photosynthesis under high temperatures, revealing a pathway that could help guide the development of more resilient crops for desert climates, such as those in Saudi Arabia. In a study led by Professor Monika Chodasiewicz, the team identified a previously underappreciated protective mechanism inside chloroplasts, where photosynthesis occurs. When temperatures rise, a chlorophyll-producing protein called protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase reorganizes into small, reversible droplets known as chloroplast stress granules. These structures help protect and restore the plant's ability to convert sunlight into chemical energy. © KAUST

Q&A: Engineering crop resilience to heat and drought may help reverse climate change

Heat waves are arriving sooner and becoming hotter, with the United Kingdom recording May 25 as its hottest day in May since tracking began more than a century ago, only for the record to be broken again the next day. While humans can turn to artificial means of cooling, such as air conditioning or swimming pools, plants are left to cope with heat and frequently co-occurring droughts on their own. Sarah M. Assmann, Waller Professor of Biology at Penn State, is working to better understand how plants respond to environmental signals—and is applying that understanding to develop crops more resilient to environmental stress.

Squad Update: NRL Round 16 v Dolphins

The Wests Tigers have trimmed their squad to 20 ahead of their clash with the Dolphins in Round 16 of the NRL Telstra Premiership.

The Tigers will be on the hunt for a second-straight win following last week’s dramatic victory over the Titans at Leichhardt Oval in the final NRL match at the ground before its redevelopment begins.

Peter Taateo has been omitted and will suit up for the Western Suburbs Magpies in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

When asked by the media on Thursday about Adam Doueihi’s return to play, NRL Head Coach Benji Marshall said, “If it’s not this week, it will be next week.”

Wests Tigers and Dolphins kick off Super Saturday

Can the Dolphins make it seven wins on the trot or will Wests Tigers turn it on again for their home fans as they did at Leichhardt Oval last Sunday?

Can the Titans stop the Panthers juggernaut or will Ivan Cleary's men rack up win No.13 for the season and continue their march towards another minor premiership?

Can the Sea Eagles keep the Fozball revolution going and solidify their top-four spot or will the Bulldogs carry on their winning form from the King's Birthday?

These questions and more will be answered on Super Saturday and you can follow all the action on NRL.com's live blog.

Dolphins Team List: Round 16 v Tigers

Chasing a seventh straight victory, the Dolphins have stuck with a winning formula.

Head Coach Kristian Woolf has named an unchanged 17 for Saturday's clash with the Tigers following last week's victory over the Roosters.

The Dolphins enter the contest full of confidence after recording six consecutive wins; the longest winning streak in Club history.

John Fineanganofo, LJ Nonu, Samuel Elliott, Max Plath and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki have been named in the reserves.

A seventh consecutive win would further cement the Dolphins' place among the competition's form teams as they continue their pursuit of the Club's maiden finals berth.

The Dolphins respect and honour the Traditional Custodians of the land and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and future. We acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the lands we meet, gather and play on.

‘This has really thrown me’: The local footy team left hurt by Pride decision

A football club in Melbourne’s northern suburbs withdrew its support for a Pride celebration, leaving the club divided and the senior women’s team to hold its own unsanctioned event.

Coburg Districts Football Club, in the Essendon District Football League, refused to endorse the Pride game despite granting the women’s team permission for the celebration at the start of the season, according to three sources not prepared to be named because of the sensitive nature of the issue.

According to the sources, the reason given to the women’s team changed multiple times, before the club eventually told them that the Pride event on June 13 clashed with the official unveiling of the club’s redeveloped facilities at Cole Reserve Oval in Pascoe Vale.

El Khannouss backs Saibari to seal Bayern move

Saibari is being linked with a summer move to the Bundesliga giant, with recent reports suggesting a verbal agreement may already have been reached.

The striker joined PSV's academy in 2020, making his first-team debut in November that year, and has gone on to make 142 appearances in all competitions.

Saibari has helped PSV to win the Eredivisie title in each of the last three campaigns, as well as lifting the KNVB Cup twice.

He has netted 42 goals in that time, with his tally of 19 the joint-most of any PSV player last season. His 28 total goal involvements (also nine assists) were a team high.

Ismael Saibari agrees €55m transfer to Bayern Munich as medical booked in for Morocco & PSV star

Bayern Munich are on the verge of completing a blockbuster deal for Ismael Saibari, with the PSV Eindhoven winger reportedly agreeing to a move worth €55 million. The Morocco international was one of the standout performers in the Eredivisie last season and is now set to undergo a medical with the German giants.

The €55 million transfer represents a historic moment for PSV, as it marks the highest fee they have ever received for a player, comfortably surpassing their previous record sales. The 25-year-old midfielder has seen his stock rise meteorically over the last twelve months, attracting interest from across Europe's elite. Bayern have moved swiftly to secure his signature, tying the Moroccan talent down to a long-term contract that will run until the summer of 2031, according to Voetbal International.

Bayern Munich closing in on massive €53m transfer for Ismael Saibari as PSV hold out for club-record fee

Bayern Munich have stepped up their pursuit of PSV star Ismael Saibari by submitting an improved offer worth a total of €53 million. The Morocco international has emerged as a priority target for the Bundesliga giants, who are looking to bolster their midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

According to Eindhoven Dagblad, Bayern have significantly increased their bid for Saibari as they look to wrap up a deal for the talented playmaker. The German giants have put a total package of €53m on the table, including performance-related add-ons, to convince PSV to part with their prized asset.

The structure of the deal is said to consist of a guaranteed fixed fee of €48 million, with a further €5 million potentially following in bonuses. Saibari is currently away on international duty with Morocco as they prepare for the World Cup, but his representatives are working behind the scenes to facilitate what would be a career-defining move to the Allianz Arena.

Achraf Hakimi to stand trial for rape in France as PSG star declares he's 'eagerly awaiting' day in court

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been ordered to stand trial before a French criminal court following a definitive ruling by the Versailles Court of Appeal. The Moroccan international has been under intense judicial scrutiny since early 2023 over allegations of sexual assault, a claim the full-back has consistently and vehemently denied.

The case stems from a February 2023 incident where a young woman reported a sexual assault at the player's home in Boulogne-Billancourt. Following an extensive three-year judicial inquiry, the prosecution formally requested a trial before the final judicial referral was confirmed by the appeals court. Legal authorities in Hauts-de-Seine ultimately ruled that the investigation had yielded sufficient evidence against the 27-year-old to proceed directly to a full criminal trial.

World Cup: Who is Ayyoub Bouaddi, the French teenager playing for Morocco?

A promising midfielder marked for the French team, Bouaddi is a breakout sensation on his World Cup debut with Morocco.

Until last month, France-based teen footballer Ayyoub Bouaddi probably thought he would experience this year’s FIFA World Cup the way most 18-year-olds do – watching it on a TV, surrounded by friends and family, and most likely backing Les Bleus, one of the pre-tournament favourites and the team he would join in the future.

Having risen through the French youth ranks, Bouaddi was tied to the French national team programme and marked as a future talent.

But Bouaddi was no ordinary 18-year-old. He had recently become the youngest player to record 50 appearances in France’s top tier of club football – Ligue 1.

The most valuable U19 midfielder in the world? Bouaddi's World Cup is rewriting his price tag

The World Cup is often the perfect stage for young players to announce themselves to the world, and no player has so far grasped that opportunity better than Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. In the African nation’s opening game against Brazil, the 18-year-old talent embodied his team’s fearless performance against the World Cup heavyweights and spent much of the match outplaying the star-studded opposition. The Lille talent seems to be on the cusp of greatness for his national team and, to no great surprise, many of Europe’s biggest clubs are taking notice.

“As a French football fan, I'm quite disappointed to see him go for another team other than France,” noted Ronan Caroff, French Area Manager, when he discussed Bouaddi’s introduction to the World Cup on this week’s Market Values podcast. “But of course, with how stacked the French midfield is and the level that Bouaddi has shown already with Lille for the past few seasons, it makes sense that Morocco will come knocking on his door and probably attract him with more playing time early on. And so far, the bet seems to have been successful with his performances in the pre-World Cup friendlies. And then in his first game with Brazil, he was already given a lot of responsibility, and he's shown the same qualities that he has with Lille so far.”

Arsenal ahead of big rivals in the race for Ligue 1 talent

Ayyoub Bouaddi is one of the finest teenagers in world football, and he could be moving to Arsenal this summer as the Gunners push to land the Lille youngster.

Football365 claims that Arsenal are ahead of the likes of PSG and Chelsea in the race for his signature as he continues to shine for Morocco at the World Cup.

He delivered a commanding performance during their first game of the competition against Brazil, dominating the midfield and surprising many fans with his display.

That performance has made more teams and supporters take notice of the midfielder, and Arsenal want to add him to their squad in this transfer window.
