It was a tough baptism for sprinting star Gout Gout, who finished deep in the field in his first Diamond League race – the top men’s competition in Europe.
Gout was slow out of the blocks, as is his custom, but could not make up ground with his regular slingshot off the bend in a field of seasoned racers in the 200m final at the Oslo Diamond League.
He finished sixth in 20.20 seconds behind Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo, who claimed victory with a 19.84. There was the gentlest of tailwinds (+0.2) for the race.
The new under-20 world record holder last year made the semi-finals at the world championships in Tokyo, so he knows what it is to race the best men in the world and hold his own. This was another step in his senior racing education.

Gout Gout has been taught a harsh lesson in his Diamond League debut, finishing down the track against Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo.
The teenage sensation’s issues at the start of his races came back to haunt him in his first 200m showdown against “the big boys” in Oslo, finishing a disappointing sixth.
Gout was slow out of the blocks with his race over almost before it began given Tebogo had started brilliantly and kicked off the bend for an easy victory in a season’s best 19.84sec.

Young sprinter up against the ‘big boys’ for the first time but he still takes life in the spotlight in his stride
Life comes at you fast, especially when you are Gout Gout. In April, the 18-year-old prodigy became the fastest teenager over 200m in history. Then last month, he finally got his own bedroom for the first time, having bought his family a new six-bedroom house in Brisbane. Now, in Oslo on Wednesday, he is one of the headline acts in his first senior Diamond League race.
Excited? You bet he is. “It’s definitely a special event, knowing that it’s my first race against the big boys,” he says, with a smile that lights up a drab summer’s day. “It’s a different ballgame for sure.”
