US watchdog announces Epstein files audit

Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein have continued campaigning for more transparency, including at a congressional hearing with Pam Bondi in February. (AP: Tom Brenner)

The Department of Justice inspector general has announced an audit of the government release of the Epstein files.

The audit will review how the department identified, redacted and released records.

Some survivors have kept up a campaign for more transparency because some files were not published and some information was blacked out or held back.

An internal US government watchdog says it will audit the justice department's handling of the Epstein files following months of controversy over redactions, missed deadlines and the publication of survivors' details.

As Trump inspector general nominee waits in wings, Epstein files audit draws muted praise

Survivors and allies are cautiously optimistic, but one former IG warned that an audit won’t get at how the Justice Department bungled the Epstein files so badly.

After the Justice Department announced Thursday that its Office of the Inspector General intends to audit the department’s response to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, one small detail tended to go unremarked: President Donald Trump recently put forward his own nominee to lead the office conducting that audit.

William Blier, a DOJ employee of roughly 40 years, is currently the acting inspector general in charge of the office. Blier, the longtime deputy inspector general, has served in that office for almost 20 years and, prior to that, was a career federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., for two decades.

The US Justice Department's internal watchdog says it ‌will investigate how the department complied with a law requiring the release of investigative ‌files on the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The DOJ's Office of Inspector ‌General, which operates independently of the department, said it would "evaluate the DOJ's processes for identifying, redacting and releasing records in its possession as required by the act".

Agius smashes lap record to front Friday standings in Jerez

The COTA winner set a 1:38.973 to lead Lopez and Baltus into Saturday at the Spanish GP

Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) is the rider to beat heading into Saturday’s action at the Spanish Grand Prix after the Austin race winner slammed in a new Jerez Moto2 lap record in Practice. The Australian’s 1:38.973 was followed closely by Alonso Lopez’s (Italjet Gresini Moto2) best effort, the Spaniard sits 0.079s away from Agius after the opening day, with FP1 pacesetter Barry Baltus (REDS Fantic Racing) third quickest.

It was Baltus who topped the times in the early exchanges before Collin Veijer (Red Bull KTM Ajo) rose to P1 with what was briefly a new lap record, before Agius slotted in the fresh Pirelli rubber to move the goalposts in the closing stages. The #81 is the only rider to officially dip into the 1:38s in Jerez, and that time was only six tenths away from Alex Rins’ best lap in MotoGP FP1. Quite the performance.

It was Veijer who led the majority of the race, but he dropped back in the second half of the race, commenting in his parc ferme TV interview afterwards on the MotoGP world feed that he struggled with arm pump in closing laps.

Liam Ryan: St Kilda forward cops brutal injury blow in first game against old side West Coast Eagles

Liam Ryan’s first clash against the club he won a premiership with didn’t all go to plan, with the high-flying forward temporarily grounded after a collision with Reuben Ginbey.

Ryan was leading up to the wing for an attempted mark on the lead during the second term of Sunday’s clash against West Coast, but ran into Ginbey, who had been looking to go back with the flight.

The Saints forward was in immediate pain after Ginbey’s knee made contact with what appeared to be his hip. He was helped from the ground, with the Eagles defender showing great care to wander over and offer a pat and well wishes for his former teammate.

Match Preview: Sydney FC vs. Auckland FC

Allianz Stadium, Sydney, AustraliaSunday, April 26th, 5pm NZT Written by Jonno Ross

Last weekend stung. A 1-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners was gut-wrenching, but Sunday is far from a meaningless fixture. This group needs to dust themselves off and come out firing against Sydney FC because there is still plenty on the line.

Last weekend’s defeat to the Mariners handed the Premiership title to Newcastle, and fair play to the Jets; it’s a well-earned achievement.

But there’s still plenty for Auckland FC to fight for. We head to Allianz Stadium on Sunday to face Sydney FC. We’re currently sitting second and need the win to guarantee a bye next weekend and to avoid an Elimination Final.

NRL 2026: Andrew Johns calls for Panthers star to be axed in stunning move for State of Origin 1

Andrew Johns has picked James Tedesco in his predicted NSW team for State of Origin 1, leaving out Panthers hero and incumbent Blues fullback Dylan Edwards. Panthers star Edwards has been NSW fullback for the last two series, helping the Blues win in 2024 but unable to prevent a Queensland triumph last season.

Prior to that, Tedesco had a mortgage on the NSW No.1 jersey and played 23 Origin games for the Blues. Tedesco was dropped as fullback and captain when Michael Maguire took over in 2024, and Daley again went with Edwards in 2025.

Edwards was also the back-up option to Reece Walsh for the Kangaroos in the Ashes, but it's believed it would have been Tedesco in the squad if he didn't withdraw for his brother's wedding. Edwards and Tedesco have both been in good form so start 2026, however Edwards has made some uncharacteristic errors.

'Hopefully I don't get the boot': Munster turns to Yeo for tips on form slump

Maroons captain Cameron Munster is so desperate to overcome the form slump he fears could cost him his Origin spot that he sought the advice of Blues counterpart Isaah Yeo.

Munster and Yeo were at the MCG for the Origin series launch with rival Queensland and NSW coaches, Billy Slater and Laurie Daley when the superstar five-eighth asked the Blues skipper how Penrith had turned their 2025 season around.

The Panthers are leading the NRL after just one loss this season and beat the Storm 50-10 but last year the four-times back-to-back premiers were sitting on the bottom of the NRL ladder until Round 12.

Both the US and Iran are sending envoys to Pakistan after negotiations reached an impasse a week ago. While it’s unclear if there will be direct talks, the two adversaries are expected to each meet with Pakistani officials who are seeking to mediate a resolution of the war.
