OpenAI releases GPT-5.5, bringing company one step closer to an AI ‘super app’

OpenAI on Thursday released GPT-5.5, its newest AI model, which the company calls its “smartest and most intuitive to use model” yet. The algorithm comes with increased capabilities in a multitude of areas, with OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman claiming that it also brings the company one step closer to the creation of OpenAI’s “super app.”

On a call with journalists, Brockman said that the new model was a big advancement “towards more agentic and intuitive computing.”

OpenAI announces GPT-5.5, its latest artificial intelligence model

OpenAI on Thursday announced its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.5, which the company says is better at coding, using computers and pursuing deeper research capabilities.

The launch comes less than two months after OpenAI released GPT 5.4, the latest sign of the breakneck pace of development that's driving the AI sector.

"What is really special about this model is how much more it can do with less guidance," OpenAI President Greg Brockman said during a briefing with reporters on Thursday. "It can look at an unclear problem and figure out just what needs to happen next. It really, to me, feels like it's setting the foundation for how we're going to use computers, how we're going to do computer work going forward."

Hundreds of fishing boats sit idle off southern China — but they're not there to fish

In the vast, turquoise expanse of the South China Sea, hundreds of fishing boats sit idle off China's southern coast.

"They're there to maintain presence," said Gregory Poling from the US Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

"Philippine surveillance shows crew members sitting around eating lunch, on satellite phones, or playing cards."

According to research from the US think tank, each Chinese boat receives a few thousand dollars per day just to be there.

Troops from the US, Philippines, Australia and Japan unite for the biggest military exercise in "real-world conditions" to ensure security in the Indo-Pacific region. But China has criticised the drill.

Which states get a public holiday for Anzac Day?

Anzac Day is coming up on Saturday, but does that mean you get a long weekend?

Anzac Day is a public holiday in each state and territory.

When Anzac Day falls on a weekend, many employees are already not working because they have weekends off.

Some state governments decide to observe a public holiday on a weekday, which results in those workers having a day off work.

This year, that bonus day off is on Monday — but that's not Australia-wide.

Only three of Australia's eight states and territories have public holidays on Monday.

What is open and what is closed on Anzac Day 2026?

Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year, which means in Queensland we don’t get an extra day off.

However, restrictions to opening hours and alcohol sales apply just as if the Saturday were a weekday Anzac Day public holiday.

That means non-exempt businesses must remain shut on the day, and some exempt ones can’t open until 1pm or 1.30pm.

Large retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and hardware shops, are “non-exempt shops”, and must remain closed on Anzac Day.

So that means no Coles, Woolies, Aldi, Bunnings, Myer, David Jones, Kmart, Target, or Big W (except the Woolworths at Brisbane Airport, which is open from 1pm).
