Oakbank celebrates 150 years of Easter racing

The Oakbank Racing Club will celebrate 150 years of the Easter Racing Carnival on Saturday.

The Oakbank Racing Club will celebrate a huge milestone on Saturday, commemorating 150 years of Easter racing.

Since Tormentor won the inaugural Great Eastern Steeplechase on Easter Monday in 1876, the Oakbank Easter Carnival has been a staple of South Australia’s Easter calendar.

Previously attracting over 100,000 racegoers across the annual two-day event, the cessation of SA jumps racing – which drew the ire of many – and impact of the state’s “Mad March” has seen crowd numbers diminish in recent years, but the carnival still remains an Easter ritual in the Adelaide Hills.

Keeping the spark alive: 150 years of Oakbank

James Jordan spent Monday afternoon at a local Adelaide Hills butcher, stocking up on bacon and snags.

At 6am on Tuesday, he was trackside at the historic Oakbank Racecourse, serving up breakfast to trainers, jockeys and owners.

Gallops were in full swing and trainers from across the state had a final chance to give their horses a look at the unique circuit ahead of the iconic Easter Carnival.

This year marks 150 years of racing at Oakbank and, for the last five years, the respected form analyst has sat on the Oakbank Racing Club’s committee.

The position is voluntary but the blend of several of his biggest passions – namely thoroughbred racing and the sense of community amongst locals in the Adelaide Hills – meant he didn’t hesitate when offered a chance to help the club.

Ran well first-up on the Parks track. The 1400 metres is ideal, well weighted after the claim.

Has good fresh form. Maps to sit midfield and her recent trials have been solid.

Pulled too hard last time. Steps back in distance and gets blinkers on. Should be running on down the middle.

The undefeated Penrith Panthers have produced another supreme display to down Melbourne 50-10 at Western Sydney Stadium.

Thomas Jenkins scored his fifth double of the new season as the Storm conceded a half century of points for the first time since 2003 in what was their biggest defeat since the 2008 grand final.

"Definitely shocked at the score line," Ivan Cleary said in his press conference.

In one of the most complete displays in recent NRL history, the Panthers scored nine tries to two, with eight different try scorers as the Panthers laid down a marker to the rest of the competition, saying they are favourite to regain the premiership in October.

    Stat Attack: Panthers v Storm

The Penrith Panthers cemented themselves in the history books with a dominant 50-10 victory over the Storm, breaking multiple records in the process.

The win saw the Panthers become the first team in history to open a season with five straight victories by 20 points or more, while also recording their biggest ever win over Melbourne. Thomas Jenkins continued his remarkable run, becoming the first player in history to score 12 tries in the opening five rounds of a premiership season.

The Panthers produced a clinical attacking display, piling on nine tries in a well-rounded performance. Liam Martin and Freddy Lussick set the tone early before Jenkins crossed for a double, with further tries to Nathan Cleary, Casey McLean, Brian To’o, Luke Garner and Dylan Edwards sealing the result.

Penrith Panthers and Thomas Jenkins shatter records in stunning annihilation of Melbourne

The Penrith Panthers and Thomas Jenkins have shattered NRL records in a 50-10 flogging of Melbourne at CommBank Stadium.

Melbourne came into the match in unfamiliar territory having lost two in a row and that turned to three in an emphatic result.

Penrith's victory means they're the first team in premiership history to win their first five matches by 20 or more points. It was also the first time the Panthers have scored 50 against Melbourne and it was their biggest win against the side.

Dragons v Cowboys: Suli, Couchman return; Chester back from ban

The Dragons remain winless heading into Round 5 and a piece of unwanted history is staring them in the face on Easter Saturday.

Since the joint venture was formed in 1999 and they made a grand final in their debut season, St George Illawarra has never started a season 0-5.

If Shane Flanagan's men are to get on the board for 2026 they will need a vastly improved showing than the one they delivered last Sunday on the Gold Coast.

The stats sheet showed 31 missed tackles and 11 errors in the 22-14 loss to the Titans and a repeat of those numbers would see the lethal Cowboys attack put them to the sword.

Easter Saturday footy kicks off with the Dragons hosting a rejuvenated North Queensland at Kogarah.

It's been a tough start to the campaign for St George-Illawarra after four straight losses to open the year. Combined with last season, that's eight consecutive losses for Shane Flanagan's side. Since coming into the NRL in 1999, the joint venture club has never gone 0-5 to start a season.

Moses Suli (personal reasons) returns to play centre with Hayden Buchanan (head knock) unavailable, whilst Toby Couchman (head knock) slots into the front row with Blake Lawrie listed on the interchange.

"It's unplayable": Reviewers criticize the console version of Crimson Desert

Recent graphical improvements in Crimson Desert for PS5 have proven insufficient. The game suffers from frame rate issues, especially after adding FSR to the "60 FPS" mode. The publisher did not send out console copies before release, so for a long time, only reviews of the PC version were available online.

The PushSquare editorial team even refused to review the PC version, buying the game on PS5 for a fair test.

The results are disappointing: the publication gave the game a 6/10. Among the main drawbacks:

On the base PS5, the performance mode offers constant frame tearing and extremely blurry 1080p. In quality mode with 30 FPS, the picture is more stable, but the textures remain low quality. The situation is no better on PS5 Pro: in large camps, the frame rate drops below 20 FPS.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Millwall: Josh Coburn scores twice as Lions go second

Josh Coburn has now scored five goals in his past five games for Millwall

Josh Coburn returned to haunt old club Middlesbrough with a second-half double as Millwall came from behind to win their crucial Championship promotion encounter and go second in the table.

Boro dominated the first half and deservedly led through a header from captain Dael Fry.

But having been relieved to only go in one down, Alex Neil's side regrouped at half-time and responded when Coburn's powerful close-range volley squirmed through the grasp of goalkeeper Sol Brynn and crept over the line.

A £5m signing from Boro last summer, 23-year-old Coburn then delivered the decisive blow in the 86th minute when he steered a shot into the bottom corner.

When Jaclyn Fenech first enrolled to study architecture at university, she had plans of pursuing it as a career.

That was until she took on an elective subject in museum studies, and her plans immediately shifted.

"I was like, 'Wait, this is way more interesting to me than what I thought architecture was going to be'," she tells nine.com.au.

It wasn't long before she had transferred her studies to a degree in art theory, with dreams of one day working in the space of museum curation.

"I suppose what I really loved and what I really wanted to do after uni was to create experiences for other people to enjoy," she says.

AT first glance you would be hard pressed to find much connection between the grid for the 1981 James Hardie 1000 and Mount Panorama’s next endurance classic, this weekend’s Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.

After all, the former belongs to a truly bygone era of the sport – an era so long ago that Kevin Bartlett lined up on pole position in the famous Channel Nine Camaro, joined on the front row by the Tru-Blu XD Falcon of Dick Johnson, who was still a few hours away from becoming a Bathurst winner.

Yet remarkably, there was one driver competing in that race who is not only still actively working and competing in motorsport but set to race in this Easter’s Bathurst enduro – 45 years on from the 1000km classic of ’81. More on that shortly…

There are several current and former Supercars drivers in the mix, including Grove Racing co-driver Will Davison with Beric Lynton and Tim Leahey in the #23 BMW M3.

Childcare centres would be able to sack employees more easily if they were suspected of posing a danger to children, under a Coalition plan to win back families’ votes.

A Senate inquiry into the embattled childcare sector, driven by a Coalition-dominated committee and released this week, also called for harsher penalties for paedophiles.

Allegations of childcare workers sexually abusing children in their care in the past year have rattled parental confidence in the system, and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor singled out childcare as a key issue after deposing Sussan Ley in February.

Victorian early childhood education and care sector interim report tabled

A parliamentary committee investigating Victoria’s early childhood education and care sector has heard evidence of educator shortages, staff working under sustained pressure, and inadequate resources, support and training to meet children’s complex needs.

The Select Committee on the Early Childhood Education and Care Sector in Victoria tabled its interim report today after receiving 99 submissions and holding five days of public hearings with educators, advocacy groups, regulators, service providers, unions, community organisations, and First Nations and disability‑led representatives.

The Committee also heard that the rapid rise of the for‑profit sector has shifted the focus from children’s safety to profit, further stretching systems and undermining both child safety and quality.

How is the date of Easter decided? What to know about holiday's timing

Easter is a few days away, meaning Christians all over New England are preparing to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The Christian holiday can take place anywhere from March 22 through April 25, and this year, it falls in early April. Because Easter is a moveable holiday, all the holidays of the Easter season, such as the season of Lent, Palm Sunday and Good Friday, move with it, which can be confusing.

Here's why Easter moves, as well as a full list of dates for the 2026 Easter season.

In 2026, Easter Sunday will be on Sunday, April 5. The holiday, which celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead after he was crucified, is regarded as the holiest day in Christianity.

When is Lent over? What to know ahead of Easter

Lent and the 2026 Easter season, which began with Ash Wednesday as part of a triple holiday overlap in mid-February, are nearing an end for Christians in the United States and around the world.

Here is what to know about when Lent ends and the obligatory fast for Catholics.

Lent will end on Holy Thursday, which will be on April 2, 2026 at sunset. Good Friday is the following day, April 3.

Sunset times vary by city. In Columbus, sunset will be at 7:57 pm, Cincinnati will be at 8:02 pm, and Akron will be at 7:52 pm on April 2, 2026, according to Time andDate.

Lent will end at sundown on Holy Thursday, according to United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

What Holy Week means and when Easter and Holy Week fall in 2026?

Holy Thursday — also known as Maundy Thursday — marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, one of the most sacred periods of the Christian year and the culmination of the Lenten season, leading up to this solemn observance and the celebrations of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

The Easter Triduum, for Christians, is the remembrance of the Last Supper, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The three religious holidays are:

Holy Thursday, according to Christianity.com, is when Jesus celebrated his final Passover and with his disciples.
