    Woman Tasered after daylight stabbing at popular inner-city cinema

    A woman has been Tasered and arrested after a 48-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the hand outside a cinema in Sydney’s Inner West.

    Emergency services were called to the Dendy Newtown cinema on King Street about 11.40am on Monday following reports of an assault.

    A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said a call came in just after 11.30am, with paramedics treating a man who had been stabbed in the hand.

    He was the only patient involved and was taken to Sydney Hospital Hand Unit in a stable condition.

    RBA rate relief more than a year away, leaving family budgets squeezed

    Interest rates are unlikely to fall for more than a year, piling pressure on the federal government to restrain spending as family budgets stretch to accommodate four interest rate increases since February.

    That was the broad view of 37 economists polled for The Australian Financial Review’s quarterly survey, with the Reserve Bank of Australia only expected to begin cutting rates in November next year as the job market weakens.

    Rain records broken across Victoria with soggy start to October

    From Gippsland to the Great Ocean Road, record-breaking spring rains have left Victoria soggy, but warmer relief is on the way later this week.

    The Mount Cowley weather station, about 10 kilometres west of Lorne, recorded the highest rainfall total across the state when 192 millimetres of rain fell across 72 hours to 9am on Sunday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

    Cowwarr Weir, which sits just south of the Victorian Alps, received 185 millimetres of rain over three days, while the Gippsland town of Briagolong recorded 182 millimetres – an October record for the highest 72-hour rainfall total in the town’s history.

    Lakes Entrance, Horsham and Mt Baw Baw all exceeded their highest single-day rainfall total in October on Saturday.

    A severe weather system continues to dump heavy rain into sodden riverine catchments across Victoria, sparking widespread warnings of transport disruption and delays.

    The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood watch for most of Victoria including the north-east, central, south-west and north-west, as well as parts of Gippsland.

    It also said bursts of heavy rain accompanied by potentially damaging winds and thunderstorms were possible in parts of New South Wales as a band of heavy weather swept the southern states.

    Djokovic's victory over Zverev dented the German's quest to finish the year as the world's number one-ranked player.

    "These are the kind of moments that I still play for, compete for," Djokovic said.

    "The motivation is big when you are feeling good and competing at par with the best players in the world in front of 15,000 people.

    Novak Djokovic rolled back the years to oust Alexander Zverev from the China Open on Sunday, beating the top seed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a semi-final with Daniil Medvedev.

    The 39-year-old electrified a packed crowd in Beijing, where he extended an astonishing winning streak to 32 matches. Djokovic got off to a poor start, double-faulting twice in the first game to help Zverev, a decade his junior, break serve instantly.

    Boos filled the stadium soon afterwards when the umpire agreed to replay a point Djokovic had won, after Zverev complained about a flicker in the LED panels during play. The German saw out the first set from there, but a valiant Djokovic roared back to seal the second with a cross-court winner to break serve and force a decider.

    Residents of a busy Queensland coastal region woke in shock after hearing an explosion at about 4am.

    A man walking his dog with a friend discovered the unexploded ordnance on a Sunshine Coast beach at about midnight. 

    Residents on Queensland's Sunshine Coast were woken in shock by an early morning blast when the Defence Force detonated an unexploded World War II-era shell found on a beach.

    Police were called to Wurtulla Beach just before midnight after Sean Mackney's friend discovered an object at the base of a sand dune while they were walking his dog.

    A World War II artillery shell found on a Sunshine Coast beach has been destroyed in a controlled blast that woke nearby residents before dawn.The unexploded round was discovered just before midnight on Saturday at the base of a dune on Wurtulla Beach. Sean Mackney and a friend came across it while walking his dog. His friend called out that she thought she had found a bomb. Curious, Mackney picked the object up before he realised what it was.“The sheer weight of it was massive,” he told the ABC. “I didn’t really know what to do … we called the police, and they were down there pretty quickly. I’m surprised nobody else had seen it, and [I wonder] how long it was exposed.”

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Denver Broncos lost both of their starting cornerbacks to injuries with Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss both ruled out after getting hurt in the first half Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

    Receiver Pat Bryant was also hurt and taken off the field on a cart with an apparent leg injury following a catch in the third quarter.

    Surtain went down late in the first half with a noncontact injury to his right ankle and needed to be helped to the locker room. Surtain is a two-time All-Pro and won the 2024 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

    Patrick Mahomes looks to extend mastery of Raiders, AFC West

    When the Chiefs play in Las Vegas on Sunday, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be looking to extend his mastery of the Raiders — and of their division.

    Via NBC Sports research, Mahomes has a career record of 13-2 against the Raiders. In those 15 games, Mahomes has thrown 36 touchdown passes against five interceptions.

    Mahomes is also 7-0 on the road against the Raiders, with 20 touchdown passes and two interceptions in those games.

    Against the AFC West, Mahomes has a record of 37-8. The 82.2 percent winning rate is the best for any quarterback since the merger against division rivals, based on a minimum of 25 starts.
