Quite a lot happened in a fiery end to the grilling of Gareth Hales.

Firstly, Hales Jnr admitted that he had met more than once with far-right vlogger Chris de Bruyne at his Sante offices, to discuss both the election and de Bruyne’s business. He also admitted to meeting Morgan C Jonas, a far-right, anti-lockdown figure.

Both of these men were involved in the far-right stunt campaign targeting left-leaning politicians on the campaign trial that this masthead revealed was funded and co-ordinated by Brethren elders. De Bruyne and Jonas also both endorsed Brethren posters and ads that appeared during the election, but Hales Jnr denied having any substantive political discussion with them, instead saying their meetings were all about business.

Shouting matches between MPs and senators have erupted during hearings into whether a powerful and secretive Christian sect interfered in the last federal election.

Bruce Hales on Friday became the most senior figure in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church to appear before a committee examining whether the organisation mobilised members to campaign, including by allegedly paying neo-Nazis to harass MPs.

Ryan Fitzpatrick on Bo Nix’s night: “That right there is garbage”

The Broncos won on Thursday night, beating the defending Super Bowl champions in overtime. But the victory comes with a major asterisk; Denver’s offense continues to be not good enough.

As Ryan Fitzpatrick of Prime Video put it after the game, quarterback Bo Nix is not good enough.

“Bo Nix is not playing competitively,” Fitzpatrick said, growing increasingly animated as he went. “It’s almost disrespectful to the quarterback position how he’s playing quarterback right now. . . . He has no trust from his coach, he calls a screen play on third and eight. . . . Now they’re in the locker room right now, they’re excited. They won. He’s not playing competitive football right now. . . . I can only imagine how Sean Payton feels. I mean, Sean Payton, [offensive coordinatpr] Davis Webb, everybody that blocks for him. He’s not competing right now. And that’s something that he’s hung his hat on for the last two years. I don’t know if he’s still injured. I don’t know what’s going on. But it’s not good enough. It’s effort.”

Bo Nix Season-low passing yardage in OT win

Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for 107 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed four times for two yards in the Broncos' 17-14 overtime win over the Seahawks on Thursday. He also recovered a fumble.

Nix continued his season-long trend of sticking to mostly short-area passes, leading to a season-low passing yardage figure and figure of 4.0 yards per attempt. The third-year signal-caller did reverse a trend of three straight games with sub-60.0 percent completion rates, but Nix also failed to throw a touchdown for the first time all season. Denver's defense did most of the heavy lifting and both of the Broncos' touchdowns came on the ground, while Nix now has three sub-200-yard passing efforts in the last four contests. The Oregon product should have a good chance of boosting his numbers in Week 7, however, as the Broncos visit the defensively challenged Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 25.

'As famous and defiant as ever': Why Elizabeth Holmes remains the US's most fascinating fraudster

Once a symbol of tech's promise, Holmes was brought down by her false claims about a blood-testing device. Now gripping new film You Can See Everything explores her baffling character.

Nathan Fielder did not set out to make a documentary about Elizabeth Holmes. As he explained on stage after the premiere of You Can See Everything at the New York Film Festival two weeks ago, at first he was just curious to meet her. He was far from alone in wondering about a woman who has captivated public attention, for better and then for worse, for more than a decade.

The Most Shocking Thing About ‘You Can See Everything’: Nathan Fielder’s Sympathy for the Devil

Ever since the first trailer went up for “You Can See Everything,” if not since word of the movie got up, schadenfreude lovers have been rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of Elizabeth Holmes getting more of what’s coming to her. Especially knowing that Holmes and her husband Billy Evans actually sought out Nathan Fielder, who exudes a natural skepticism, to make the documentary, there’s been an anticipatory bloodlust, that they must have been fools to imagine they were doing anything but helping set their own trap. That’s not a completely ill-founded expectation: Holmes comes off in the doc as every bit as innately bizarre as anyone showing up for a cinematic freak show might hope. But the weirdest thing about the movie might be the fact that it at least allows for the possibility that the Evil Genius might be neither of the things contained in that descriptor, but rather somebody whose guileless act may not be that much of a put-on, because she’s dealing with some kind of mysterious damage we can only begin to guess at.

Gary Waddell dies aged 74: the brilliant Australian actor who turned small roles into great ones

Waddell appeared in countless films and TV shows, often as rough-as-guts characters, though he was rarely given the screen time he deserved

The great Australian actor Gary Waddell – known for his gooseflesh-raising ability to portray rough-as-guts characters so real you swear you’ve met them before – has died aged 74. Waddell was a fixture of the Australian film and TV industry for decades, bursting on to the scene, bleary-eyed and angsty in Bert Deling’s cult classic drug drama Pure Shit, a production so notorious that its first public screening, in 1976, was raided by the vice squad.

This legitimately great film – the best ever made about heroin addiction and subculture in Australia – was famously described as “the most evil film I’ve ever seen” by Melbourne Herald critic Andrew McKay (an example of hysterical overreach if ever there was one, although, as they say, those were different times). It remains a thrilling piece of social realist cinema, full of drug-taking, petty crime and tomfoolery, with the story revolving around Waddell’s character Lou, who arrives five minutes in, grousing about how he “hasn’t had a hit for 10 hours”.

Today’s ‘stealth’ bear market is ‘one of the most significant opportunities’ – The Kobeissi Letter

The S&P 500 (SP500) is trading just 2% away from a record high, yet analysts at The Kobeissi Letter argue the market is simultaneously experiencing a “stealth” bear market that represents "one of the most significant opportunities in today's market."

According to the financial research firm, 84% of S&P 500 (SP500) stocks are now trading at least 10% below their all-time highs, creating what they call a historic "Bull-Bear" market paradox.

The macroeconomic backdrop has shifted dramatically from the start of 2026, when the Federal Reserve was expected to cut rates at least three times for a total of 75 basis points.

"Today, the Fed has already hiked interest rates once this year and markets see another 3 interest rate hikes by June 2027, for a total of +100 basis points including September's rate hike," the analysts wrote, noting this represents a 175-basis-point swing in rate expectations.

Walters confirms Kangaroos shake-up as star’s World Cup could be over

Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has already locked in several team changes for Australia’s second World Cup game despite a thrilling victory over New Zealand.

Halfback Mitchell Moses suffered a leg injury and lasted only a minute or two into the second half before limping off the field.

He was replaced by Tom Dearden, who Walters later confirmed will wear the No.6 jumper against Fiji next Sunday.

It means Cameron Munster will drop out of the side, as will the injured Moses with Sam Walker already confirmed to make his Kangaroos debut in the No.7.

“(Walker will) play next week. We’ll put him alongside Tom who will play five-eighth,” Walters said after their 24-22 victory in Sydney.

Strange was one of three shadow players named by the green and gold, with Hamish Stewart and Tom Jenkins also part of the wider squad.
