Baird quits as CA chair as Big Bash sell-off fallout continues

Mike Baird had been on the CA board for six years and served as the chair since February 2023. (ABC News: Nick Dole)

Mike Baird has quit as Cricket Australia chair and will be replaced by David Boon in the interim.

Baird backed the privatisation of the Big Bash league, resulting in lost support from Cricket NSW.

Baird had an option of moving into an independent role but said he did not wish to continue without state support.

Mike Baird has sensationally quit as Cricket Australia chair, after his own state association refused to back its representative in the fallout over the privatisation of Big Bash League clubs.

David Boon appointed interim Cricket Australia chair with former NSW premier Mike Baird to step down

Mike Baird will step down as Cricket Australia chair at next month's annual general meeting, the governing body said in a statement this morning.

Baird, the former NSW Premier who has been a driving force behind CA's push towards the privatisation of Big Bash Leagues clubs, will leave the CA Board he has served on for six years. He had been chair since February 2023.

Former Test batter David Boon will take over at the October 28 AGM as the interim chair while a process to appoint a full-time chair takes place over the coming months.

Waters revealed on Monday night she has been managing a pre-existing kidney disease, but that her health had “declined significantly over the course of recent months”.

She said while her prognosis for recovery was positive, the pressure of the party’s leadership, including additional travel demands, was detracting from a focus on her health.

Larissa Waters quits as Greens leader due to illness

Greens leader Larissa Waters has quit the party’s top job due to illness.

The party will hold a secret ballot of its MPs this week to elect a new leader.

“For some time now I’ve been quietly managing chronic kidney disease alongside doing the work I love. But recently it’s taken a downturn, and I need to be honest with myself about not being invincible,” Waters said in a statement.

“My doctors have been clear: my prospects for recovery are good, but the best path forward means a slower pace of life than leading a political party allows.”

Banks cut rewards programs, free travel insurance amid surcharge ban

Sweeping changes across payment systems will start on October 1. (ABC Radio Adelaide: Malcolm Sutton)

After four decades as a Commonwealth Bank customer, Trevor Vienet is changing banks.

That is because CBA has changed its association with the Qantas Frequent Flyer program ahead of the credit and debit surcharge ban announced by the Reserve Bank of Australia.

It is the lesser-known side effect of the changes that begin on October 1 because banks' revenue will drop as they reduce the amount they charge businesses to bank with them.

The Commonwealth Bank has introduced a new in-house rewards system called Yello, which Mr Vienet is not eligible for.

Australia surcharge ban: Why councils across the country could face a $200 million a year hit from Thursday

The looming ban to surcharges on credit and debit cards could cost Australian councils up to $400,000 a year each, totalling $200 million across the entire country, a councillor has warned.

On Thursday, the Reserve Bank of Australia will remove surcharges on any payment made with card, which will mean the advertised price on a product will be how much it will cost.

Credit and debit card surcharges will be a thing of the past from Thursday. iStock

While the RBA claims the move will save Aussie consumers up to $1.6 billion in hidden fees, there are concerns the major banks will simply pass on the costs to businesses and other vendors instead of absorbing the blow.

Weapons seized in SA shopping centres since new police powers a year ago

Police have conducted 10,000 searches using metal detector wands in the past year. (ABC News: Che Chorley)

South Australia Police have seized more than 80 weapons in shopping centres over the past year under measures to reduce knife crime across the state.

The acting SA Guardian for Children and Young People says the expanded policing powers are "not a long-term solution to youth offending or violence".

SA Police says it will "continue to use the legislation as long as it is available".

Expanded police powers to search people in South Australian shopping centres will continue after dozens of weapons were seized over the past year, but the state's children guardian says "more transparent" data is needed.

SA Police Seize 80 Weapons in Shopping Centres

According to ABC News, South Australia Police have seized at least 80 weapons in shopping centres during the past year after receiving expanded powers to search people in declared shopping precincts. Officers conducted 10,000 metal-detector wand searches across 18 centres, with weapons found in just under 1 per cent of searches.

The laws allow police to stop and search anyone inside a declared shopping precinct and direct them to leave for 24 hours. Attorney-General Kyam Maher, speaking at Burnside Village, said the result showed that “by and large South Australians are doing the right thing”, while cautioning against complacency over knife crime.

Acting Assistant Police Commissioner David O’Donovan said he was not aware of pushback from shoppers over wand searches. He said police would continue using the legislation while it remained available, describing the powers as a way to make public places safer. He also said there had been incidents involving children possessing weapons, though SA Police could not provide specific figures.

Concern mounts over slow-moving, planetary-scale ‘Kelvin’ wave heading for California

The ocean phenomenon could raise sea levels by up to a foot as El Niño keeps warm water trapped along the coast

Concerns are mounting about an ocean phenomenon known as a Kelvin wave that could raise sea levels along the California coastline by up to a foot, as scientists say El Niño is supercharging the threat of storm surges and flooding in the coming months.

As an incredibly strong El Niño continues to develop in the Pacific, the phenomenon brings with it a strange shift in the ocean. The Kelvin wave phenomenon is created when trade winds that usually blow from South America towards Asia die down or reverse in El Niño years, setting off a massive, slow-moving slosh of water.

What is a Kelvin wave? ABC7 meteorologist Dallas Raines explains feature of El Niño headed to SoCal

The upcoming El Niño season is forecasted to bring high sea levels and potentially powerful winter storms to Southern California, but another component of that natural phenomena is also headed to the region.

A Kelvin wave is currently moving along the coast of Mexico, and it's expected to reach California by next month.

Kelvin waves originate far away in the Western Equatorial Pacific Ocean. They're a foundational component of what drives El Niño and the massive amount of warming happening in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific.

Kelvin waves form when trade winds weaken. When those winds stop blowing, which typically happens every 4-7 years, warm water that accumulates in the ocean starts moving back toward California and South America.

Centrelink pensioner reveals sad daily change in $630 struggle as older Aussies face 'un-retirement'

More older Australians are having to stay in the workforce for longer than planned as cost of living concerns force them to push back retirement. It's a trend that is seeing more workers either missing out on a comfortable retirement or sacrificing their golden years.

Em Farr, 59, relies on a modest fixed income and says it's become increasingly impossible in the past year to live like she is used to. "I've really, really had to tighten everything, which I've never had to do in my whole life," she told Yahoo Finance.

Due to a medical condition she will rely on Centrelink in the years ahead, with little ability to work. But Farr thinks she will still need to find another source of income to give her some much-needed breathing room.

Retirement system ‘unfit’ as Australians live, work longer

Australia’s retirement system is failing to meet the expectations of people who are now living and working longer because it was built on assumptions from the 20th century, new research has warned, as the program faces rising pressure from an ageing population and piling public debt.

While the system ranks among the world’s best, behind only Norway, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark, Natixis Investment Managers’ latest study revealed 76% of Australians believe it is failing to keep pace with the needs that come with increasing life expectancy and longer working lives.

Prepared in collaboration with CoreData Research, Natixis said the research assessed retirement security across 44 countries using 18 indicators spanning finances in retirement, material wellbeing, health and quality of life.
