Grant Batty: Former All Blacks wing dies, aged 74 in Queensland

Former All Blacks, Wellington and Bay of Plenty wing Grant Batty has died, aged 74.

Batty died on Friday in Queensland, Australia, where he had been living for several years.

Hailing from Greytown, Batty played 56 matches and 15 tests for the All Blacks during his career between 1972 and
    1977, scoring four test tries.

He was often one of the smallest men on the field, standing 1.65m tall and weighing 70kg.

New Zealand Rugby’s acting chief executive Steve Lancaster said Batty was a “highly skilled player of his era”.

“He could energise a crowd, many of whom loved his bravery in not shirking away from larger opponents, and often coming away on top,” Lancaster said.

"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Grant Batty, All Black #715, who has sadly passed at age 74," New Zealand Rugby said today in a statement.

Batty played 56 matches for the All Blacks during his career between 1972-1977, including 15 Test matches.

Originally from Greytown, Batty moved to Wellington before making his professional rugby debut in 1970.

Standing at 165cm tall and weighing around 65kg, Batty was often one of the smallest players on the field and was known for his speed and defiant approach to the game, often being described as a "pocket rocket".

Ins & Outs: Wanderers v Newcastle Jets

Head coach Alen Stajcic has named his extended squad for Saturday night’s clash against Newcastle Jets at CommBank Stadium.

Western Sydney Wanderers return to CommBank Stadium on Saturday night looking to build on last week’s important 1-0 victory over Melbourne Victory, a result that lifted the Red & Black off the bottom of the Isuzu UTE A-League ladder and ended a five-game winless run.

Kosta Barbarouses proved the difference at AAMI Park, converting from the spot against his former club, while the Wanderers’ defensive unit stood firm under sustained pressure, limiting Victory to just two shots on target despite heavy possession.

Even if LIV Golf spends hundreds of millions of dollars to re-sign two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau, PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy said he doesn't believe the Saudi Arabian-financed breakaway league will be any better off.

"It's not as if they made any huge signings this year, is it?" McIlroy told The Telegraph of London on Thursday. "They haven't signed anyone who moves the needle, and I don't think they will. I mean, they could re-sign Bryson for hundreds of millions of dollars, but even if they do, it doesn't change their product, does it? They'll just be paying for the exact same thing."

‘Haven’t signed anyone’: Rory’s brutal LIV sledge as star twists knife in $750m reality check

Golf champion Rory McIlroy has delivered a blunt verdict on the LIV Golf threat, suggesting the rebel league is at a low point in its four-year existence following the departure of former world No. 1 Brooks Koepka.

Earlier this month, five-time major winner Koepka quit the Saudi-backed league with a year remaining on his contract, returning to the PGA Tour with a AU$7.4 million fine and minor playing restrictions, while he’s banned from earning any equity in the Tour for five years.

Exclusive: Secret report suggests fats, oils and grease accumulate in ‘inaccessible dead zone’ at Malabar plant, then dislodge when pumping pressure ‘rapidly increases’

Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast

A giant fatberg, potentially the size of four Sydney buses, within Sydney Water’s Malabar deepwater ocean sewer has been identified as the likely source of the debris balls that washed up on Sydney beaches a year ago.

Sydney Water isn’t sure exactly how big the fatberg is because it can’t easily access where it has accumulated.

Fixing the problem would require shutting down the outfall – which reaches 2.3km offshore – for maintenance and diverting sewage to “cliff face discharge”, which would close Sydney’s beaches “for months”, a secret report obtained by Guardian Australia states.

$3bn wastewater overhaul after debris balls on Sydney beaches

A $3 billion wastewater infrastructure overhaul has been announced for the Malabar wastewater treatment system.

The NSW EPA identified the site as the source of debris balls, which washed up on Sydney and Central Coast beaches between late 2024 and early 2025.

The Glenfield and Liverpool wastewater facilities will be upgraded in the first stage of the project.

Western Sydney will undergo a $3 billion overhaul of its wastewater infrastructure following an investigation into debris balls that washed up on the city's popular beaches.

Werder Bremen vs Eintracht Frankfurt LIVE: Bundesliga stats & head-to-head

Werder Bremen are winless in six Bundesliga matches, but most of their points have come at home

Eintracht Frankfurt are yet to win in 2026 and have conceded 13 goals in their last five Bundesliga matches

And with almost the last kick of the game, Eintracht Frankfurt come from behind to level the game against Werder Bremen and the points are shared at the Weserstadion.

It's the same story again for Frankfurt, scoring goals isn't the problem but conceding is. Werder Bremen thought they'd broken their six match winless streak with a late goal from Milosevic but the wait for a win continues.

Frankfurt snatch stoppage time 3-3 in Bremen

Eintracht Frankfurt provided plenty of Bundesliga drama once again when they snatched a stoppage time 3-3 draw at Werder Bremen on Friday night.

Ansgar Knauff scored in the fourth minute of time added on after a cross from Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab.

The goal stood upon a video review as the linesman had originally raised his flag, indicating that the ball was out of bounds when Amaimouni-Echghouyab made the cross, which was not the case.

It was a tough blow for Bremen who had just minutes earlier turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Jens Stage headed a 2-2 equalizer off Samuel Mbangula's free-kick in the 78th minute and Jovan Milosevic made it 3-2 in the 80th into the empty net, set up by Romano Schmid.

Two penalties give Girona bragging rights over Espanyol in fierce Catalan derby

BARCELONA, Spain(AP) — Vladyslav Vanat scored penalties in stoppage time of each half as Girona beat Espanyol 2-0 in a fiercely contested Catalan derby in La Liga on Friday.

It was the first time Girona has won three on the trot since November 2024.

The result lifted it into ninth place in the table. Espanyol remained fifth.

Girona had the better of the first half and went ahead on the stroke of halftime when Omar El Hilali was adjudged to have pulled Hugo Rincón in the box.

Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović saved Vanat’s initial effort but the referee said he moved from his line before the kick and ordered a retake. Vanat made no mistake a second time, firing a perfect effort to the keeper’s right.

After the miracles of Carnesecchi and Scuffet, the defenses gave way and the match opened up. In the 83rd minute, Krstovic found the lead for Atalanta with a winning strike that surprised the Orobic defense.

However, it didn't take long for the twist to arrive: Durosinmi had a dream debut, heading in an unstoppable shot past Carnesecchi to immediately restore parity.

Pisa keep up survival hopes with valiant point at home to Atalanta

Draw specialists Pisa picked up their 11th stalemate of the Serie A season thanks to a 1-1 draw at home to Atalanta, whose promising run of three wins in a row across all competitions came to an end.

Stadio Romeo Anconetani had already played host to three goalless draws this season, and there was little in the opening quarter of the match to suggest this wouldn’t be the fourth.

Pisa were getting the ball into their opponents’ box more regularly, but their lack of end product made them look every bit the side who had scored just once at home all season.

Pisa 1-1 Atalanta – Match Report: Super sub Durosinmi salvages point

Pisa rescued a late point against Atalanta with a dramatic equaliser in the closing stages, cancelling out Nikola Krstović’s late opener to secure a 1-1 draw.

The hosts started brightly and were the more proactive side for much of the first half, winning a succession of corners and forcing Marco Carnesecchi into early saves. Henrik Meister and Idrissa Touré both went close as Pisa pressed high and moved the ball confidently, while Atalanta struggled to impose themselves beyond brief spells of possession.

After the break, Atalanta gradually grew into the contest, slowing the tempo and enjoying longer phases on the ball. Substitutions proved decisive for Rafaele Palladino’s side, and the breakthrough arrived in the 83rd minute when Krstović reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box and fired into the roof of the net.

As Adelaide rolls out the welcome mat to cycling world for Tour Down Under, I feel ashamed | Maeve Plouffe

Australia’s WorldTour race on my local roads fills me with pride, but as the years go on it feels like hosting international friends in a house that is visibly on fire

Sweat rolls off my brow as my legs roll powerless beneath me. Eyes fixed on my glowing bike computer screen, watching as my heart rate climbs faster than the power that can be produced by my legs. 150, 160, 170bpm. How long has that been? I wipe the bead of sweat obscuring the timer. Only five minutes.

I can barely squeeze in each breath, and the walls feel like they’re closing in. Yes, walls. Because it’s not the sun’s glare making this ride unbearable. Outside, it’s freezing. It’s October. But inside, we’re sealed within sterile white walls and glass windows glistening with condensation, sweat puddling on the floor.

The ground has shifted – this year, the balance of power is much more with the women at the Tour Down Under.

While the men's race next week is bigger and remains the flagship of the Adelaide cycling event, the women boast a stronger field.

For the first time, the women's Santos Tour has attracted all 14 WorldTour teams. The powerful Dutch-based SD Worx-Protime squad will make their Adelaide debut.

There's an old refrain that you're going to hear a lot in the next few weeks, and that's that the cycling season doesn't really start until Opening Weekend. A lot of people will joke – and some seriously believe – that everything before Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is basically just cycling friendlies, an extension of winter training.

Well, I'm here to tell them that they're wrong, and by subscribing to that point of view, you miss out on some of the best races of the year. With the Tour Down Under right around the corner, it's time for us to recognise and appreciate the actual start of the season.
