Palestinian author calls for apology as dozens quit Adelaide Writers' Week

Randa Abdel-Fattah told ABC Radio National on Friday that she would like an apology and for her invitation to be reinstated. (Bendigo Writers Festival)

A Palestinian Australian author has been axed from Adelaide Writers' Week after its board said her appearance would "not be culturally sensitive" in the wake of the Bondi terrorist attack.

Several authors, including Jane Caro, Hannah Kent and Peter Fitzsimons, have withdrawn from the festival citing concerns about freedom of speech.

Adelaide Writers' Week is scheduled to take place from February 28 to March 5.

Palestinian Australian author Randa Abdel-Fattah has asked for an apology and "accountability" after she was axed from Adelaide Writers' Week, as dozens of authors cancel their appearances at the event.

Star British author Zadie Smith has joined dozens of writers who have pulled out of this year’s Adelaide Writers’ Week following the Adelaide Festival board’s decision to remove Palestinian-Australian writer Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah from the line-up.

Among the writers resigning from the event in protest are Pulitzer Prize-winning American Percival Everett, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, and American journalist Masha Gessen.

Locally, Michelle de Kretser, Helen Garner, Melissa Lucashenko, Hannah Kent, Evelyn Araluen, Jane Caro and Peter Greste have withdrawn, as have Peter FitzSimons and Kate Halfpenny, writers for this masthead. Richard Flanagan, while not on the line-up, has expressed support for those who have boycotted.

As authors abandon Adelaide Writers’ Week after cancelling of Randa Abdel-Fattah, is free speech in tatters?

The decision by the Adelaide Festival Board to exclude Palestinian Australian author and academic Randa Abdel-Fattah from Adelaide Writers’ Week on the grounds of “cultural sensitivity” is based on a dangerously broad and vague criterion for suppressing free speech.

The board appears to have overruled Writer’s Week director Louise Adler to remove Abdel-Fattah from the program, arguing it would not be culturally sensitive to include her so soon after the Bondi terror attacks, due to her “past statements”.

FA Cup third round: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Macclesfield and Weston-super-Mare carry the non-league hopes while fringe players need to seize their chances

Silly goals conceded, chances missed, a lead surrendered and points squandered against relegation fodder. On the face of things, Manchester United have changed manager but nothing else. The reality is different. They started slowly at Burnley, settling into a 4-2-3-1 formation that suits them – and pretty much every other team – far better than Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 before, midway through the first half, they started to play. The deployment of Bruno Fernandes close to the opposition goal, along with a wide player, Patrick Dorgu, playing on his natural side, meant Benjamin Sesko was, for the first time, provided with decent service. Then, following Jaidon Anthony’s equaliser, Darren Fletcher’s side risked defeat by going all out for the win – one nearly achieved through the timely introduction of Shea Lacey, a richly talented 18-year-old. Brighton will present far stiffer opposition but, for the first time in a long time, United are doing what United are meant to do. Daniel Harris

The English FA Cup third round kicks off Friday, and it remains one of the most anticipated dates on the calendar — a weekend when non-league part-timers get the chance to realize the dream of playing — and beating — professional clubs, including the biggest teams in the Premier League.

It can be a weekend the top clubs dread given the risk of becoming the victim of a giant-killing, but it is the first step on the road to Wembley for the teams hoping to win the competition this season.

Storm Goretti live: rail services suspended, flights cancelled and schools closed across UK

Road, rail and air travel disrupted as Storm Goretti brings wind, rain and snow to the UK and parts of Europe

Fresh weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued by the Met Office for much of Scotland and the north of England on Sunday.

A yellow warning covering large parts of Scotland, the East and West Midlands, north-east and north-west England and Yorkshire will come into force at 2am on Sunday, expected to run until 3pm.

As Storm Goretti sweeps across the UK and pummels parts of the nation with wind, rain and snow, many local authorities in England and Wales activated or extended the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) in recent days – providing emergency accommodation to people sleeping rough who are at risk of harm or death.

Storm Goretti brings snow for only parts of region

The impact of Storm Goretti on the south was less severe than anticipated, with snow only falling in higher areas.

Several containers fell from two cargo ships off the Isle of Wight amid strong winds.

Snow was reported in areas including Chipping Norton and Nettlebed in Oxfordshire overnight.

There was disruption in Dorset with flooding and gusts of up to 65mph (105km/h).

Prof Liz Bentley, chief executive of the Reading-based Royal Meteorological Society, said wet roads and pavements were likely to turn icy overnight but that there would be no more snow.

Nick Kyrgios has conceded he is not up to playing singles at the Australian Open, ruling himself out of a likely wildcard.

The local crowd-puller was tipped to receive one of the three remaining wildcards from Tennis Australia.

But he announced on social media on Friday he would only play doubles with great mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at Melbourne Park, with the tournament getting underway on January 18.

Multiple wrist and knee surgeries have limited Kyrgios to just seven singles tour matches over the past three years, with his ranking plummeting to 670.

Australian Open boss Craig Tiley has backed Nick Kyrgios’ decision not to play singles at this year’s event, revealing he had not given the Wimbledon finalist any guarantee of a wildcard.

Kyrgios, who turns 31 in April, announced on Friday that he instead wanted a singles wildcard to go to a player more prepared for the rigours of grand slam tennis. However, he plans to contest doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis, who he combined with to win the 2022 Australian Open title.

Poll shows One Nation Reaching New Heights

New federal polling shows the Coalition and One Nation are tied on a 23 per cent primary vote while Labor’s vote has fallen to 29 per cent.

The DemosAU Poll, first published in Capital Brief, -5.6 per cent swing against Labor since the May 2025 election and the -8.8 per cent swing against the Coalition has led to a swing of +16.6 per cent to One Nation.

In the first published federal voting intention poll of the year, the Greens and Others recorded primary votes of 12% and 13% respectively.

On a two-party preferred basis between Labor and the Coalition, Labor led 52-48 per cent.

Right-wing minor party One Nation' s popularity has skyrocketed with Australian voters to tie it with the coalition for the first time.

The first major poll in 2026, conducted by Demos AU for Capital Brief, has found almost a quarter of the electorate (23 per cent) would choose firebrand Pauline Hanson's party in primary voting.

That cut-through has been buoyed with its hardline conservative positions trumpeting anti-immigration stances after the Bondi beach massacre, where 15 people were gunned down on December 14.

Cairns waterways, including at Peets Bridge, are expected to rise as the system nears the coast. (Supplied: Cairns Regional Council.)

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is a high chance the tropical low off the Coral Coast could become a tropical cyclone from tomorrow.

Locally intense rainfall and damaging winds are forecast for parts of the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays.

The BOM will continue to monitor the system and issue further warnings if the low develops into a tropical cyclone.

A category one cyclone is now highly likely to form off the coast of north Queensland this weekend and cross the coast late tomorrow or on Sunday.
