Kalyn Ponga wasn’t ready to lead the Knights in 2022. He is now

When Kalyn Ponga first had the Newcastle captaincy thrust upon him at the age of 23, it was a case of too much responsibility too soon.

In those early, difficult days as skipper, Ponga was trying to be all things to people before he had even worked himself out.

“We went through some bad years, those first couple of years, and I didn’t really know how to handle it either. I probably didn’t have the people around me that could help me get through that period.”

When named as co-captain alongside Jayden Brailey at the start of 2022, Ponga was far removed from the consummate commander he is today. The “C” next to his name was a burden when he was still working out his direction, let alone that of a struggling NRL franchise.

Arise Knight Kalyn: how Ponga found himself as a leader

Kalyn Ponga says he is no longer having to put up a facade as Newcastle's leader, with the Knights star feeling he is finally confident to be himself as an NRL captain.

Ponga will gear up for the biggest club match of his life on Sunday against Penrith, as he and 15 other Knights prepare for their first preliminary final.

The fullback's emotion after last Sunday's win over the Warriors may become one of the enduring images of this year's finals, with Ponga admitting he felt like crying.

Fairly or unfairly, Ponga's commitment to Newcastle has been questioned several times in his career.

Tearful Johns praises fans for helping Knights end grand final drought

Former Knights star Matty Johns has praised the Knights and their fans after Newcastle reached the NRL grand final for the first time in 25 years.

Johns became emotional as he hailed the supporters for sticking by the team.

The Knights will face the Roosters in the NRL grand final on Sunday, October 4 from 7:30pm AEDT.

Former Knights star Matty Johns has broken down in tears as he heaped praise on the Newcastle team and its fans after a gripping and gritty NRL preliminary final win over Penrith.

The Knights played more than half the game with 12 men on the field after Phoenix Crossland was sent off for a hip drop that graphically broke Nathan Cleary's leg.

Yet here they are, just 80 minutes away from the unlikeliest of premiership victories and coach Justin Holbrook had a powerful message in Sunday’s press conference when asked how his team has proved they don’t need big-game experience to go all the way.

“We don’t care about that,” he said after Newcastle’s upset win over Penrith.

Knights coach Justin Holbrook has taken preparations to the boxing ring.

Well, not literally, but somewhat figuratively as Newcastle build towards an NRL preliminary final for just the sixth time in club history.

While obviously being focused on their own red-and-blue backyard ahead of Sunday's clash with Penrith at Accor Stadium (4pm), Holbrook has likened different play-off opponents this series to contrasting fighting styles.

"We've done a good job of being aware of what we're going to face," Holbrook said while addressing media at Knights headquarters on Thursday.

Live: Wallabies leading world champion Springboks after pulsating first-half

Wallabies coach Les Kiss is presented with his toughest challenge yet, as his troops take on the top-ranked men's team in world rugby, the Springboks.

He earns an early shower, with local Perth product Carlo Tizzano now on the field.

The Springboks have their backs to the wall, but they're handed an excellent chance to peg back the Wallabies' lead with a penalty in opposition territory.

Like a thief in the night, Jorgensen pounces on spilt ball from Springboks centre Canan Moodie.

He had some distance to go, but he outran the Boks' cover defence to score in the right corner.

Is Boks’ bench really a ‘bomb squad’? Maybe not, but it can still blow the Wallabies to bits

South Africa’s vaunted bench is casting a large shadow over the Wallabies heading into Sunday’s Test in Perth.

Malcolm Marx, Ox Nche, Wilco Louw, Lood de Jager, Jasper Wiese, Morne van den Berg, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Quan Horn represent a formidable array of weapons at Rassie Erasmus’ disposal.

All, apart from Horn, played a significant role in the Springboks’ recent 3-1 series win against the All Blacks.

But can it be called a “bomb squad” when it is a traditional 5-3 split of forwards and backs, as opposed to the 6-2 or 7-1 forwards-heavy variations used in the past?

The Block 2027 Sunbury homes plans revealed

The Block 2027 will transform three heritage buildings at Jacksons Hill in Sunbury into five competition homes and a separate All Stars renovation.

The Block’s 2027 plans are already facing headwinds after the discovery of repeated instances of water damage and sub-floor issues at the ex-mental asylum bought earlier this month.

New planning documents have revealed the show is intending to respond by adding a pool to each of the six homes to be built into the Sunbury Mental Hospital at Jacksons Hill that sat vacant for 15 years.

The files lodged with Heritage Victoria last week have also revealed the contestants won’t be getting a level playing field, with a 97sq m gap bigger than many apartments between the biggest and smallest homes.

Casting opens nationwide for The Block 2027 contestants

RENOVATION enthusiasts across Australia are being given the chance to swap their tools at home for one of television’s biggest building challenges, with casting officially open for The Block 2027.

Nine is searching nationwide for teams of two to compete in the 23rd season of the long-running renovation reality series, with filming expected to begin in February next year.

The call has gone out for enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking Australians willing to put their renovation skills – and relationships – to the ultimate test.

Successful applicants will need to clear their calendars, with contestants required to be available for approximately 12 weeks of filming.

Another day, another The Block drama. However, this time, it’s centred around the 2027 season.

Last week, Scott Cam and Shelley Craft announced at the Channel Nine Upfronts (basically, the network’s annual event where it announces its major plans for the next year) that the beloved renovation show would be filming in Jacksons Hill, Sunbury, Victoria.

I was in the room, and Scott said the show was going “full Bridgerton” as contestants would be asked to convert three buildings, previously used as an asylum, into five luxury homes.

    Australia’s next-gen star stuns with one-handed first-ball screamer

Cooper Connolly’s impressive ODI tour in Africa continued with a screamer for Australia on the first ball of the second match against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium.

Mitch Marsh won the toss in Johannesburg and elected to field with his side right on top from the start.

Josh Hazlewood pitched his ball at a good length outside off-stump with Aiden Markram attempting a cut shot towards point.

Connolly leaped high and took the catch one-handed to send Markram packing.

“What a wonderful catch,” Shaun Pollock said on Fox Cricket’s coverage.

“Very much an all-rounder with primarily his batting but he’s so valuable in the field … reminds me a bit of Michael Clarke in the field, the way he throws and fields.”

The Australians are under siege in the second ODI and now their in-form quick has been ruled out of the remainder of the match.

Nathan Ellis has suffered a side strain, leaving captain Mitch Marsh with another headache to work through as the Proteas take control.

The Aussie quick bowled four overs and conceded 22 runs before his injury brought an early end to his day.

Strange New Worlds’ Worst Season Ends With A Reminder Of How Good Star Trek Fans Used To Have It

Strange New Worlds' fourth season has been something of a slog for fans. That's because the show spent most of the season doing bizarre gimmick episodes instead of more traditional sci-fi stories. Fortunately for the fans, the Season 4 finale "Tomorrow's Enterprise" provides everything they have been clamoring for: it's a serious story that leans on several beloved Star Trek tropes while building a definitive bridge to The Original Series. There's just one problem: "Tomorrow's Enterprise" is so good that it reminds us of just how painful this season has been.

"Tomorrow's Enterprise" has a provocative plot involving Uhura communicating with a different version of herself. This isn't someone from a parallel world, though: it's actually a version of Uhura from one year in the future. When Scotty unexpectedly dies, the two Uhuras bend all of time and space to save a man that they (surprisingly enough) have major feelings for. Eventually, they manage to bring the Enterprise's resident miracle worker back to life. Along the way, the episode provides a tantalizing glimpse of everything that changes between the end of Strange New Worlds and the beginning of The Original Series.

After weeks upon weeks of knockout rounds, belts and riffs, the winner of The Voice Australia 2026 has been crowned. Here's who won The Voice Australia 2026.

It's without a doubt that this year's shebang has featured a bunch of twists — and I'm not talking about the movement on those giant red chairs.

In the 2026 season, The Voice Australia implemented a first-in-its-history plot twist where Tones And I was recruited as a secret fifth judge who sneakily stole contestants who failed to pass blind auditions and trained them up for a second chance.

But now, with blind auditions, knockouts, quarterfinals and semifinals done, we've got our final four.

Ted Kaczynski was 16 when he entered Harvard University as a mathematics prodigy. Years later, he would become known as the Unabomber, after carrying out a bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others between 1978 and 1995.

Netflix’s Unabomber directed by Janus Metz, explores Kaczynski’s life before and during the events that led to his capture. Jacob Tremblay plays the younger Kaczynski, while Russell Crowe portrays Harvard professor Henry Murray, Shailene Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller and Annabelle Wallis portrays Christiana Morgan, Murray’s academic collaborator.

‘Unabomber’ Review: Jacob Tremblay and Russell Crowe in a Facile Rendering of Ted Kaczynski’s College Days

Director Janus Metz's thriller, also starring Shailene Woodley, attempts to plumb the depths of a pivotal moment in the infamous murderer’s life — his time as a Harvard student.

While Netflix has Ryan Murphy busy investigating (or flat-out making up) the motives of killers like Jeffery Dahmer, the Menendez Brothers and Lizzie Borden, the streamer has enlisted director Janus Metz to tell the story of Ted Kaczynski, the math prodigy turned reclusive murderer known as the Unabomber — also the movie’s title. But Unabomber, written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, is not some sweeping birth-to-death survey of Kaczynski’s life. It instead focuses on a young Kaczynski’s time at Harvard University, where he participated in a brutal psychological study that, in the movie’s framing, may have helped form the anarchic worldview that eventually led to his infamous deeds.

ACT's top cop backs controversial laws in battle against bikies

The laws are in place in most other Australian jurisdictions, but Labor-led ACT governments have argued they conflict with the Human Rights Act.

Police and experts argue now is the time to introduce the laws in the territory.

ACT Chief Police Officer Scott Lee has no doubt about the damage outlaw bikie gangs are causing in Canberra.

While raw numbers in the Canberra region do not match those in Sydney and Melbourne, there has been a notable increase in the past few years.

Deputy Commissioner Lee said there were currently five outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCGs) in the ACT, with about 45 members and approximately 20 associates.

Canberra police report growing biker gang presence in ACT

Canberra police in Australia have reported an increase in the number of members of outlaw biker gangs in the Australian Capital Territory. Five such groups are currently active there, with about 45 members and approximately 20 people associated with them. ACT Police Chief Scott Lee described this trend as a cause for concern.

As ABC News Australia reports, Lee said that such groups are linked to organised crime. He noted that their numbers in the region are lower than in Sydney and Melbourne, but have increased noticeably in recent years.

For decades, Rebels was the only established biker gang in the territory. Since the beginning of the 2010s, most of its members have moved to other groups, including Bandidos, Hells Angels, Finks and Comancheros. Several of them already have their own chapters in the ACT rather than using Canberra only as a transit route.

ACT police chief backs anti-consorting laws

According to ABC News, ACT Chief Police Officer Scott Lee is publicly backing anti-consorting laws as police step up efforts against outlaw motorcycle gangs in Canberra. Lee said there are five outlaw motorcycle gangs in the ACT, with about 45 members and approximately 20 associates, and that the number has grown in recent years.

For decades, the Rebels were the territory’s one established bikie gang, but since the early 2010s most Rebels have “patched over” to groups including the Bandidos, Hells Angels, Finks and Comancheros. Several groups now have ACT chapters or bases. Lee said Canberra’s growth and prosperity made it attractive for both investment and crime, while Associate Professor Mark Lauchs said gangs were increasing in Canberra because it was harder for them to operate elsewhere in Australia.
