The Danish toymaker that built a global empire on interlocking plastic bricks has unveiled what executives are calling the most significant evolution in its 93-year history: a tiny computer embedded inside a standard Lego brick.

Announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Lego Smart Play represents an eight-year, several-hundred-person development effort to add interactivity to physical toys without requiring screens, apps or complex set-up procedures.

“We introduced a step change to the Lego system of play,” Julia Goldin, Lego’s chief product and marketing officer, told this masthead. “We’re introducing a platform consisting of a smart brick, tags and interactive minifigures that fits seamlessly with the rest of the system, but provides an opportunity to bring a new dimension to play.”

On March 1st, 2026, The Lego Group will begin selling the most ambitious brick it’s ever made: a tiny computer that fits entirely inside a classic 2×4 Lego brick. When it detects NFC-equipped smart tags nearby, embedded inside new Lego tiles and new Lego minifigures, or when it sees other Smart Bricks, the company claims it will make entire Lego sets come to life — starting with the humming lightsabers, roaring engines, light-up blasters, and the music of Lego Star Wars.

L'Oréal’s CES 2026 beauty devices include a skin-like flexible LED mask

Over the lastten or soyears, L'Oréal has brought a taste of beauty tech to the masses at CES 2026. This time, it has three devices to show off: the “Light Straight + Multi-styler” as well as the helpfully named LED Face Mask and LED Eye Mask.

Don’t let the unassuming names mislead you. These three products actually harbor some unique traits. The Light Straight (and multi-styler, which I’m going to just call the Light Straight from here on), for instance, uses infrared light to help generate the heat required to style your hair. Meanwhile, the LED Face Mask is different from those made by companies like Dr. Dennis Gross, Omnilux, Therabody and Shark. Instead of fairly hard shells that sit rigidly on your face, L'Oréal’s version looks to be pliable and thin.

CES 2026: L’Oréal and Amorepacific reveal what’s next in beauty tech trends

The global beauty industry is turning its attention to CES 2026, as major players use the world’s largest consumer electronics trade show to signal what’s next in beauty tech, longevity science and personalised care.

Taking place January 6–9 in Las Vegas, CES is once again emerging as a key proving ground for beauty brands looking to move beyond products and into technology-led ecosystems — from AI-powered diagnostics to light-based hair and skincare solutions.

Among the headline exhibitors is Amorepacific, which will debut Skinsight, a CES 2026 Innovation Award Honoree in the Beauty Tech category. Developed in collaboration with researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the platform is positioned as a next-generation “electronic skin” solution, designed to analyse real-time skin-ageing signals and deliver personalised skincare recommendations.

Marnus, Stokes clash in fiery end to captivating day

Joe Root hit his second century of the series but Travis Head's blitz and a spicy confrontation between Marnus Labuschagne and Ben Stokes lit up Sydney late

Joe Root's bittersweet Australian redemption campaign continued as he equalled Ricky Ponting's mark of 41 Test hundreds, before the home side's battering ram Travis Head rounded on his third century of the series as he helped wipe off close to half of England's advantage in rapid time.

Root's 160 crafted over almost seven hours across the opening two days of Sydney's dead-rubber fifth Ashes Test could have tallied higher still if not for his teammates' wasteful approach in arguably the best batting conditions of the series.

Over the last two decades, Australian prime ministers have become reliable guests of the McGrath Foundation’s high tea, the high-powered annual fundraiser on day three of the Pink Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is one of two glaring omissions from those expected to show face at today’s function.

Albanese, along with his Communications and Sport Minister Anika Wells, are expected to steer clear of the SCG on Tuesday, amid mounting pressure on Labor to launch a federal inquiry into last month’s Bondi massacre. Instead, Albanese is scheduled to travel to flood-ravaged far north Queensland, according to one person familiar with his schedule.

Bondi attack hero al-Ahmed, responders honoured at Australia cricket match

Before the fifth Ashes Test, Australian and English cricket teams honour responders who rushed to the site of the shooting.

England and Australia’s cricket teams, as well as the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground, have honoured the emergency service personnel and members of the public who responded during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in December.

Both teams formed an on-field guard of honour, and the spectators joined in with loud applause before the fifth Test match of the Ashes series, which got under way on Sunday.

The biggest cheer from the sold-out crowd was reserved for hero Ahmed al-Ahmed, who ran towards one of the attackers and wrestled the gun from him, walking out with his right arm in a sling.

Ashes 2025-26: What is the Pink Test?

The 'Pink Test' is an annual cricket tradition dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer treatment during the Sydney Test match in Australia.

The event pays tribute to Jane McGrath, the wife of former Australian cricketer, Glenn, who died in 2008 from breast cancer.

Jane was a prominent cancer support campaigner and established a foundation in 2005 to raise money to fund breast cancer care nurses in Australia.

Glenn is widely regarded as one of the best pace bowlers of all time. He took 563 wickets in 124 Tests for Australia and he was the most successful quick bowler in history when he retired in 2007.

Adelaide University has officially opened following a controversial $450m merger between the universities of Adelaide and South Australia, with staff arriving back on campus this morning.

The new Adelaide University, which cost state taxpayers about $450 million, has officially opened after a series of earlier controversies, ranging from its chosen Kaurna name reportedly not making sense, a statement about working from home that led to the resignation of a Deputy Vice Chancellor and the use of land at Magill.

There were also controversial media reports over the new chief Professor Nicola Phillips‘ salary of nearly $1 million being less than her male predecessors’ pay packets.

The United Cup has its next quarter-finalist, and for the third time in the tournament’s four editions, Greece will advance to the knockout round. Stefanos Tsistipas’ and Maria Sakkari’s three-set victories secured the Group E tie against Great Britain ahead of the mixed doubles match at RAC Arena in Perth.

Notably, Sakkari’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Emma Raducanu, was her first career victory against the Briton on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz. Sakkari is now 2-0 in singles to start the season, defeating Naomi Osaka on Jan. 2 in the win over Japan.

"Emma, I've had four tough losses against her so to get that first win against her, against a great opponent, it means a lot, especially delivering for Team Greece," Sakkari said on-court.
