"I'm not that spaced out…" : 22 years ago, Jack Nicholson made a legendary appearance that made cinematic history

In 2003, the Critics Choice Awards delivered a rarity: Best Actor split between Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis. What followed was an acceptance scene that slipped its moorings, with Robin Williams shifting the mood from stately to unhinged. Laughter rippled into full throttle as the room realized it was watching something unrepeatable. The chemistry between two giants turned a routine thank you into awards lore, a moment that still echoes whenever ceremonies flirt with chaos.

The 2003 Critics Choice Awards promised poise, polish, and star power. On the Best Actor slate were Jack Nicholson for About Schmidt, Daniel Day-Lewis for Gangs of New York, and Robin Williams for One Hour Photo. The category took an unusual turn when the prize landed in a rare tie between Nicholson and Day-Lewis. It was the 8th edition of the show, yet what followed would make it feel utterly new.

Batman in 1983: The Movie We Almost Got Before Tim Burton Changed Everything

By the time .css-ak7tmt-Italic{font-style:italic;}Batman arrived in theaters in 1989, it felt inevitable. The black suit. The gothic skyline. Danny Elfman’s operatic score. Jack Nicholson’s Joker. Tim Burton’s vision was so dominant it rewired how pop culture saw the character.

But six years earlier, Batman was already this close to becoming a movie star.

In 1983, Warner Bros. commissioned a full feature screenplay titled The Batman, written by Tom Mankiewicz — the screenwriter behind Superman and several James Bond films. It was not a joke draft. It wasn’t campy leftovers from the Adam West era. It was a serious attempt to bring Batman back to the big screen.

Fritz struggling with 'serious tendonitis' ahead of Australian Open

World number six Taylor Fritz says he is battling a knee issue ahead of the Australian Open, spending much of the off-season trying to fix the problem.

The American had a rock-solid 2025, winning in Eastbourne and Stuttgart and qualifying for the ATP Finals, despite dealing with tendonitis.

"I couldn't really (target) anything," he said on the ATP Tour website on what he worked on during the off-season.

"My goal was really just to try and rehab my knee. I still have pretty serious tendonitis and that's something that takes a really long time to get rid of."

Despite the inflammation lingering, the American said he does not feel it was serious enough yet to warrant a complete break from the tour.

After losing her first match for Japan against Greece's Maria Sakkari on Friday, Osaka said she got "really sick" over the holiday period and wasn't operating at 100% during the 6-4, 6-2 loss.

Osaka was coughing at times during the match and appeared to lack energy. She said she likely caught an illness from her 2-year-old daughter Shai.

"I have been dealing with some health stuff, so I'm kind of just happy to be out here right now," Osaka said. "It's not serious, but I'm not operating at the percent that I want to be operating at, which kind of sucks, because I had a really good offseason so I thought I was going to do really well here."

“Yeah, he’s reached out,” Curry said. “We haven’t been able to connect specifically on what he can do. But I know he’s seen stuff that I’ve talked about, and actually, Q, who’s not here anymore but was part of their training staff the last couple of years, was with us at Team USA last year. I think there’s been a little bit of just conversational.”

Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Lakers odds, picks and predictions

The Memphis Grizzlies (15-18) and Los Angeles Lakers (20-11) meet Friday at 10:30 p.m. ET from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's NBA odds around the Grizzlies vs. Lakers odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Lakers lead 1-0 with 117-112 road win Oct. 31, covering as 2-point road favorites as the Under (238.5) cashed.

The Grizzlies lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 139-136 in overtime in their most recent game Tuesday, failing to cover as a 2-point home underdog with the Over (234.5) cashing. Memphis was led by G Ja Morant, who dropped a game-high 40 points on 16-for-22 shooting. The Grizzlies have lost 2 straight and 4 of their last 6 contests, going 3-3 against the spread (ATS) in that span. They are 16-17 ATS on the season.

The need to make Luka Dončić work on defense on Friday

The Memphis Grizzlies will kick off the new year with a mini-series in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The latter has some weaknesses, but they have been far away a better team this season. Additionally, this won’t be easy because the Lakers are on full alert after getting embarrassed in their last two home games by the Houston Rockets on Christmas and the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday.

In Memphis’ case, they’ve struggled to get over the hump of Play-In seeding and have failed to get back to .500 whenever there’s a chance. One of the important things they’ll need to do on Friday is defend without fouling, since the Lakers are top-three in free-throw attempts. They can’t be permitted to slow the game down or put players in foul trouble, which would only bring in inferior subs for Memphis.

Zhang Zhizhen's path back from a shoulder injury & completely changing his forehand

The first Chinese man to crack the Top 100 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Zhang Zhizhen, is again representing his country on the global stage at the United Cup. But this edition is different for the 29-year-old righty.

Zhang is No. 410 in the world after an injury-mired 2025 season during which he struggled with a shoulder injury, which dates back to when he was 15.

“I do believe sometimes during the years, a few days, I felt the shoulder was painful, but I thought the problem was gone,” Zhang told ATPTour.com. “It seemed like that last year, I felt maybe in two weeks the problem will be gone. But it was still there and we did an MRI with an injection to see the problem.”

OKC Thunder Have the Next Jalen Brunson, and Will Lose Him in NBA Free Agency?

A pair of notable NBA experts suggested this week that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell will be similar to Jalen Brunson. A talented and underrated reserve who became a superstar after leaving for a big contract in NBA free agency.

The Thunder have had an outstanding start to the 2025-26 season. After reaching the NBA Finals and winning the franchise’s first championship in the spring, this year’s team has been even better. They enter the weekend with a 26-5 record and are on pace to set a new single-season record for wins.

Unsurprisingly, their outstanding play has been led by their elite defense. However, this season they have gotten even better on offense as top star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is again playing at an MVP level, and Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams are playing like borderline All-Stars. Yet, one player who has been key in their offensive growth and is slipping under the radar nationally is guard Ajay Mitchell.

Bill Simmons nominates Ajay Mitchell for NSFW honor

Even to die-hard OKC Thunder fans, the astronomic rise of Ajay Mitchell in 2025-26 has caught everyone by surprise.

So much so, in fact, that The Ringer's Bill Simmons believes he deserves to be in the running for a new, made-up honor called the "Where The F*ck Did You Come From" award.

During a recent edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the eponymous host discussed some of the biggest breakthrough players of the year so far, noting how all names mentioned logged fewer than 15 minutes per game a season ago before bursting onto the scene during this year's campaign.

After the win, Daigneault responded to Mitchell's perfect shooting performance and his role with the Thunder this season. “He's obviously a very talented player and a really impactful player, really efficient player,” Daigneault said. “It's hard to establish yourself and be on the gas on a team that's really good — a team that's pretty established that you're coming into. And he's found an unbelievable blend and has threaded a very nice needle of asserting himself, and really not flinching. “Not being afraid, and being on the gas, but also doing it in a way that's not inappropriate with what the rest of the team is doing. He's got a great diet on that. It's really impressive, and he competes on the other end. So, it makes it really easy to ride with him. He played a great game tonight,” Daigneault concluded.

Team Netherlands Griekspoor Lamens | United Cup | Tennis

Team Netherlands is back for a second shot at the United Cup, looking for redemption after narrowly missing out on a quarterfinal berth in 2024.

In an unlikely moment of symmetry, the Dutch find themselves back in Sydney and once again placed in Group F – the precise setting of their last campaign.

It was here they delivered a performance strong enough to match eventual qualifiers Norway in ties won, matches won, and set percentage, yet fell agonisingly short on the games-won ratio.

This time around, the Dutch face a formidable challenge in two-time finalists Team Poland and 2024 champions Team Germany.

Leading the charge is world No. 26 Tallon Griekspoor, who has a personal score to settle after being edged out in both of his rubbers in the 2024 United Cup.

United Cup tennis picks: Zverev vs Griekspoor, Cobolli vs Wawrinka

Germany and Italy, both realistic title contenders at the United Cup, will kick off their campaigns on Sunday. Alexander Zverev and Germany are facing the Netherlands, while Italy is going up against Switzerland.Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. Tallon Griekspoor (NED)It’s only fitting that Zverev and Griekspoor will square off in their first match of the year on Sunday at the United Cup. These two familiar foes faced each other four times this past season and have met a ridiculous eight times dating back to 2024. Zverev leads the overall head-to-head series 8-2, although many of their matches have been absolute thrillers and Griekspoor at least managed to score a recent win at the 2025 Indian Wells Masters (in a final-set tiebreaker).
