    A man has been charged with making threatening phone call to journalist Nick McKenzie on Christmas Eve. 

    The investigation was led by detectives from Taskforce Hawk, which investigates criminal behaviour in the construction industry. 

    The 31-year-old man has been bailed to appear before a court next year.

    A senior manager of bikie-linked security company MA Services Group has been charged with threatening the safety of investigative journalist Nick McKenzie following a call allegedly made to his home on Christmas Eve.

    Victoria Police said a 31-year-old man from Melbourne’s north-west was charged with two counts of using a carriage service to menace/cause offence by detectives from Taskforce Hawk, the special unit set up to investigate crime and corruption linked to the construction industry.

    Postmark change could impact getting ballots, bills in on time

    The U.S. Postal Service is making new changes in 2026, including adjustments to the postmark process, which could result in late fees and penalties for anyone mailing time-sensitive documents such as tax returns or bill payments.

    For decades, the postmark – an official mark that shows where and when mail was accepted by the Postal Service – has been used in law as proof that an individual met a deadline, such as submitting a ballot by Election Day.

    A USPS postmark used to indicate the date when mail was dropped in a mailbox or submitted at the post office counter. Now, USPS is clarifying in a new rule that the postmark will reflect the date an envelope is first processed by an automated USPS sorting machine, potentially days after it was dropped off – not the actual drop-off date.

    New postmark policy by USPS could cause issues for people

    Changes by the United States Postal Services on how postmarks will be done could cause issues for some people in the coming year.

    Postmarks for USPS previously involved official marks showcasing the date a person dropped off mail at the post office or in the mailbox.

    A new rule established as of Dec. 24 requires postmarks to show the date an envelope is first processed by a USPS automated sorting machine at regional sorting facilities and not when it’s dropped off, which could reflect it being marked as late the following day or date.

    Late fees and penalties could arise if a postmark pertaining to deadlines such as ballots, tax returns and more are mailed if the postage ends up being marked at a later date.

    Justin Hawkins admitted it is “overwhelming” for The Darkness to be headlining a new arena tour.

    The I Believe in a Thing Called Love hitmakers have enjoyed a career resurgence over the last few years, so they are delighted to be heading out on the road to headline arena concerts for the first time since 2006 because they see it as their hard work paying off.

    “Being able to do arena touring again after all this time is overwhelming.

    The first new petrol-powered, three-door Mini in a decade isn’t all-new, but it still moves the game on for the model – and is as fun to drive as ever.

    Next year will mark the 25th birthday of the modern Mini, rebooted by BMW in 2001 as a higher-priced, retro-styled city car inspired by the original 1959 design.

    The classic three-door is now in its fourth generation, rebranded as Cooper – rather than ‘Mini Hatch’, with Cooper in the variant name – and available in petrol or electric forms.

    While the electric Cooper is all-new from the tyres up, keeping the petrol version alive has led Mini to a heavy update of the previous model launched in 2014, with new front and rear-end styling, a redesigned interior, new features, and tweaked engines.

    Machu Picchu train crash leaves one dead and dozens injured

    A train driver has died and at least 40 people have been injured in a head-on rail collision near Peru's most popular tourist attraction, Machu Picchu.

    Two trains collided on the single track leading to the ancient Inca town on Tuesday, according to a statement from the local government.

    It said that 20 ambulances had attended the scene and that injured people had been transferred to medical facilities in the nearby city of Cusco.

    The US embassy in Peru said that US citizens were injured in the crash, while the UK Foreign Office said it was "supporting a number of British nationals involved".

    Five Australians safe after fatal train crash near Machu Picchu

    A train driver has been killed and at least 30 passengers injured when two trains collided head-on on the rail line to Machu Picchu, Reuters reports.

    The ABC understands the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of five Australians aboard the two trains, all of whom are safe.

    Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision near the popular archaeological site, which draws more than one million visitors each year.

    Two trains have collided head-on on the railway leading to Peru's Machu Picchu, killing a train driver and injuring at least 30 passengers, according to Reuters.

    Police are investigating the crash, which occurred on Tuesday, local time, and involved trains operated by Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A., companies that mainly transport tourists to the popular archaeological site. A health official said about 20 people were in a relatively serious condition.

    Former Test opener Matthew Hayden has called for Australian batting coach Michael Di Venuto to be held to account for failing to provide the technical guidance needed for the side’s struggling top order.

    In the aftermath of Australia’s defeat to England inside two days in the fourth Test in Melbourne, Hayden said the home side’s efforts on a difficult MCG surface were “unacceptable” after they were rolled for 152 and 132 in 79.5 overs – the first time in 97 years Australia have lost 20 wickets in fewer overs in a Test.

    Plea to help Australian mother Samantha Baillie, injured in Bali accident which left one dead

    Friends and family have rallied to support an Australian mother suffering life-threatening injuries after an accident in Bali raising more than $50,000 in a day for her medical bills.

    Samantha Baillie was on her first overseas trip when she was injured on December 27.

    While details of the accident have not been disclosed, a fundraiser set up by a friend said she was in a critical condition, and another Australian she was with at the time had died.

    The fundraiser was set up on behalf of the Baillie family by friend Savannah-Leigh Homer, who said both she and Samantha’s mother had flown to Bali to be by her hospital bedside.

    The on-air acknowledgement aired at the end of the night’s news, where current presenter Nathan Spurling addressed viewers before a short montage of clips from Brough’s time with the network was shown.

    Spurling thanked Brough for his commitment and contribution to Seven Queensland, marking the end of a lengthy tenure with the broadcaster.

    “Rob’s been a familiar and trusted voice across Seven Queensland, and above all, our thoughts are with him and his family,” Spurling said.

    The farewell comes after Brough was last seen presenting the bulletin around 15 months ago, having been on extended personal leave from his regular role across Seven’s regional Queensland bulletins, including the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay, Central Queensland and Cairns.

    Breaking: Seven farewells Rob Brough

    TV Blackbox reports that longtime 7News Queensland regional newsreader Rob Brough has been officially farewelled by the network.

    Brough, who emerged from regional radio and appeared on the ABC and Nine in Brisbane before joining Seven, hosted Family Feud in the very late 1980s and early 1990s.

    He was sacked from the game show without explanation and replaced by John Deeks. Years later, he told an interviewer: “They called me into Seven, nobody knew what was going on. Then management just said ‘we’re going to make a change’, and they didn’t tell me who was going to do it (host the show).”

    Maddy Rocci has mixed style with substance to boost the Southside Melbourne Flyers' finals push as they downed the Adelaide Lightning 85-72.

    Rocci worked the floor at the Victorian State Basketball Centre on Sunday, grabbing another double-double as she contributed 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

    The point guard, who also concedes the highest average of turnovers in the league (5.42), only coughed up a season-low two.

    Adelaide kept in touch with the hosts for the first 30 minutes and captain Steph Talbot looked to have provided the spark for a Lightning run when she scored from well behind the halfway line on the three-quarter time buzzer.

    Opals stars help Flyers shake off Lightning

    A PAIR of Australian Opals were the difference in Southside Melbourne Flyers’ 13-point win over Adelaide Lightning, kicking away to a nice 85-72 victory after a tight first three quarters. Flyers co-captains Cayla George and Maddison Rocci – who were announced in the national squad to head to Turkey earlier this month – dug deep to produce strong performances in the Round 11 WNBL win.

    After Sydney Flamers’ upset win over the UC Capitals the day before, both the fifth placed Flyers and sixth placed Lightning suddenly saw the door ajar for that crucial fourth place in the WNBL Finals race so the stakes were higher than normal. The two teams were also coming in off the back of losses in Round 10 with the Flyers losing at home to the Bendigo Spirit, while the Lightning also lost to the Spirit on the road, before being thrashed by the Lynx at home on December 21.

    Manuela Overdrive: Puoch powers Flyers past Lightning

    Teen talent Manuela Puoch has given the Southside Melbourne Flyers the "spark" they needed to close within one game of the fourth and final playoff spot after an 85-72 win over the Adelaide Lightning at the Victoria State Basketball Centre.

    The 19-year-old had 15 points off the bench, including 2-from-4 from the three-point line, and was the catalyst for a third-quarter run which allowed the Flyers to pull away from the visitors.

    ‘Grotesque’ barriers block off Primrose Hill for New Year’s Eve

    Popular spot for watching fireworks cordoned off after disbanding of dedicated Royal Parks police

    Primrose Hill has been blocked off by “grotesque” barriers to stop revellers entering to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks.

    The park in Camden has panoramic views of the capital and an estimated 30,000 people celebrated New Year’s Eve there in 2024.

    However, this year it is shut, with the gates locked from 8pm on Tuesday until 6am on New Year’s Day, after dedicated parks police were scrapped as part of a cost-cutting measure.

    Some of the park has been cordoned off with solid hoarding and temporary fencing, while other parts have temporary fencing to prevent spectators from entering.

That convention was overturned in 1995 with the release of action giant Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx, which became a hit during the holiday, pioneering the concept of hesuidang — a term that has since expanded to encompass the entire New Year and Spring Festival period.

    This piece of cinema history was recently revisited at an event hosted by the China Film Administration and organized by the China Movie Channel at the China National Film Museum. The gathering marked the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema, while promoting newly released and upcoming titles vying for the holiday audience.
