Ukraine war briefing: Zelenskyy says Kyiv cannot win without US support as Putin orders advance in Zaporizhzhia

Ukrainian president calls latest talks with Trump productive; Zelenskyy says attack on Putin’s residence is ‘lies’. What we know on day 1,406

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine cannot win its war against Russia without US support and accused Moscow of trying to sabotage peace talks after the Kremlin said it had foiled a Ukrainian drone attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence. Zelenskyy described the claim as “typical Russian lies” after his two-hour meeting on Sunday with Donald Trump in Florida, Luke Harding and Sammy Gecsoyler report. The Ukrainian president said Russia was “at it again” and using “dangerous statements” to undermine “diplomatic efforts” with the US to end the conflict. He added: “This alleged ‘residence strike’ story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war.”

'We can't just withdraw from our territories,' —Zelensky says following his meeting with Trump

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine cannot simply withdraw from its territories as part of any peace deal with Russia, emphasizing that the issue goes beyond legal constraints and affects people’s lives, during an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier aired on Dec. 29.

"We can't just withdraw, it's out of our law. We can't just withdraw from our territories. (But) it's not only the law," Zelensky said. "People live there, 300,000 people… We can't lose those people."

Zelensky's remarks follow a Dec. 28 meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence, which he described as productive.

"I’m thankful to President Trump, really, it was a very productive meeting and in Mar-a-Lago maybe another mood here," Zelensky said following what looked like one of the better face-to-face meetings between him and Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, their sixth in a year.

Moscow says Putin-Zelenskyy talks not expected

The Kremlin said no telephone conversation is planned between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that Putin’s recent call with Donald Trump did not include talks on a Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state media on Tuesday that Russia does not currently foresee direct contact between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said Moscow had no clarity on Zelenskyy’s earlier remarks suggesting Russia should prepare a “Plan B” for the conflict.

Peskov noted that although Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call on Monday, the possibility of a Christmas ceasefire was not raised. He said Russia is considering an end to the conflict only within the framework of its stated objectives, signalling no shift in Moscow’s position.

I was in my closet the day I heard those three letters: ALS. Eric called me from the doctor’s office in San Francisco; he’d flown down to see a neurologist there. His symptoms started maybe a year prior. When we would have a meal with the kids, he’d say things like, “Something’s wrong with my hand.” He was struggling to use his chopsticks, dropping his food. That was when he started seeing doctors. He was initially diagnosed with a few other things, but he had this sinking feeling that it was something more serious. And I was like, “No, it’s not. I promise you it’s not. I can feel this! It’s gonna be okay.”

Rebecca Gayheart on her 'very complicated' relationship with Eric Dane: 'I am always going to want the best for him'

Less than one year after her estranged husband, Eric Dane, went public with his ALS diagnosis, Rebecca Gayheart spoke to New York Magazine’s The Cut about caring for her ex despite their “complicated relationship.”

In the essay published Monday, the actress said she wept with Dane, from whom she had lived apart for years, when they learned of his diagnosis. “I didn’t know all the details like I do now, but I knew enough about ALS to know that there wasn’t a cure,” Gayheart said of the progressive neurodegenerative disease.

The former couple has two daughters — Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. Though Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after separating from Dane a year earlier, she dismissed the filing in March 2025, less than one month before Dane went public with his ALS diagnosis.

Iconic Perth venue among those gearing up for New Year’s Eve

Applecross’s historic Raffles Hotel is among Perth’s places to be on New Year’s Eve for those looking for a great vantage point to farewell 2025 and bring in 2026.

The iconic venue has organised its own riverside fireworks display and will have two bars open, alfresco dining and DJ in the carpark and a sold-out upstairs VIP party.

Ahead of the countdown to the year’s biggest party, venue manager Simone Rea said the hotel expected to be at full capacity for an unmissable event.

It was offering free ticketed entry before 8pm for those wanting to snag a great spot for a view of Perth’s midnight fireworks over the Swan River.

Police to have highly visible presence at Perth’s city centre New Year’s Eve celebrations

Police have vowed they’ll have a highly visible presence at Perth’s city centre New Year’s Eve celebrations this week, which are expected to attract more than 100,000 people to one of the biggest ever fireworks displays.

Festivities begin with a 12-minute family-friendly fireworks show at 8.30pm, followed by a major 15-minute production at midnight at Elizabeth Quay. Those celebrating in Northbridge will also be treated to rooftop fireworks as the clock strikes midnight.

Police yesterday said the city was one of five key entertainment precincts where they would be active, while other key regional and metropolitan sites include Fremantle, Scarborough, Hillarys and Mandurah.

'Gone off like a rocket': Households cash in on battery rebate

Kim Hammond says environmental concerns were behind her decision to get a home battery and solar system. (ABC News: Cath McAloon)

For a long time, Kim Hammond had wanted to add solar power and a battery to her home on Victoria's surf coast.

Concern for the environment and the impact of her carbon footprint were motivating the 61-year-old, who works in conservation, to move away from relying on fossil fuels, but the cost was prohibitive until recently.

Her household is one of an estimated 155,000 that rushed to take advantage of the federal government's battery subsidy scheme, introduced on July 1, 2025, within its first six months.

Without question, the most significant stories of the year revolved around the hugely popular Cheaper Home Batteries Program:

Overpowered: battery rebate could be drained in a year

Do you have a news tip? Click here to send to our news team.

Demand for household solar batteries has soared so high consumers could drain the government’s $2.3 billion rebate fund within a year.

But extending the scheme could deliver long-lasting improvements to the national electricity grid, according to a major retailer, while also forcing down household energy bills.

The warning was issued by Origin Energy, which also revealed the scheme’s popularity had seen electrification inquiries more than double and battery installations reach 1800 per day.

The news comes after federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen revealed Australian households had invested in 136,000 batteries since the launch of the nationwide rebate in July.

Stoke City v Sheffield United: Championship stats & head-to-head

Thomas Cannon returned to the bet365 Stadium to haunt former club Stoke as the Irish striker scored Sheffield United's winner.

Cannon was starring on loan for Stoke last season before Leicester recalled him and sold him to the Blades for an initial £10m in January.

He has found goals harder to come by at United and this strike was only his third of the season as the visitors made it five wins on the bounce against Stoke to get over their Boxing Day bashing at Wrexham.

Jairo Riedewald had opened the scoring with his first United goal before Cannon's effort but Ben Wilmot halved the deficit to set up a nervy finale, only for Stoke's Ben Pearson to be dismissed late on for fouling Patrick Bamford.

Wilder Demands More Consistency From the Blades: “Consistency is Key in Everything”

Sheffield United round off their 2025 campaign with a Monday night trip to the Bet365 Stadium, where they will face Stoke City in the final game of the calendar year for both sides.

Stoke’s season began in impressive fashion, with the Potters quickly establishing themselves as early contenders. However, that momentum has slowed in recent weeks. They have managed just one win in their last six Championship outings, with inconsistency creeping into their performances. Their most recent result summed up that frustrating run: a goalless draw at home to Preston North End on Boxing Day, a game in which chances were limited and cutting edge was lacking.

Multiple gunmen killed six people, including a two-year-old girl, after shooting up a beachside boardwalk in southwestern Ecuador, police said.

Three others were wounded in the attack on Sunday in the popular whale-watching destination Puerto Lopez after men in a van and on two motorcycles opened fire on the boardwalk before fleeing.

It was the third deadly attack in the city this weekend, with a total death toll of nine, local media reports said.

The whereabouts of the shooters were unknown, with initial reports pointing to a motive of an internal dispute between criminal groups, police said in a statement.

Littler conceded his first set of the tournament as Cross levelled proceedings at one apiece, but the world number one produced an emphatic response, averaging 125 in set three to regain the lead.

    Stoppage-time defeat at Pompey

Harvey Knibbs looked to have secured a well-deserved point for Nathan Jones’ side in the sixth minute of added time, but Portsmouth struck back immediately from the restart, with substitute Min-Hyeok Yang finding the net.

Jones made five changes from the side that faced Norwich City on Boxing Day and, for large spells, the Addicks looked the better team, but they were unable to capitalise on the chances that came their way.

Charlton started with real energy and intent, winning a corner inside the opening 14 seconds. Charlie Kelman kept Pompey goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid busy early on. In the 13th minute, Tyreece Campbell found Kelman in the penalty area, but the striker’s effort was straight at Schmid. A minute later, Schmid got down well to his left to push away Kelman’s placed shot after Miles Leaburn had picked him out inside the box.
