Australia not alone as OpenAI agents hacked other websites

OpenAI has confirmed the hacking of an Australian government website is one of dozens of more breaches by its agents globally. (Reuters: Carlos Barria, file)

OpenAI says dozens of third parties have been affected by autonomous agents bypassing security controls or otherwise negatively impacting their systems.

New evidence shows its agents spent days trying different tactics to access Australian health data, though the separate incidents have not been formally linked.

OpenAI is conducting a months-long review of incidents and will continue to notify affected organisations on a rolling basis.

Rogue artificial intelligence agents spent almost a week trying to access Australian health data as OpenAI reveals "dozens" more breaches globally.

OpenAI says its bots broke into other governments’ websites

Australian senators are demanding OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman appear before a parliamentary inquiry into artificial intelligence as the tech giant reveals its rogue agents have hacked dozens more organisations around the globe.

OpenAI confirmed on Friday (US time) its bots had infiltrated United States government websites and leaked more than 50 ChatGPT user photos just days after Anthony Albanese revealed to the world the company had hacked Medicare.

The prime minister on Saturday pointed to the broadening security breaches as more evidence humans risked losing control of the technology without a co-ordinated international response, while insisting the AI rollout was inevitable and Australia must get on board.

OpenAI says agents leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users in latest example of rogue activity

Disclosure reveals new area of privacy risk for the company and illustrates how difficult it is to inventory unauthorized activity tied to its agents

Two months after OpenAI disclosed the accidental hacking of Hugging Face, the ChatGPT maker is still working to understand the full scope of its rogue agent activity, two people briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The latest example came on Friday when OpenAI said its agents had leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users. OpenAI declined to say if the images were AI-generated or identified real people. It also declined to say when the images were posted.

Also on Friday, OpenAI confirmed its agents had accessed US government websites, including those of the Security and Exchange Commission and the commerce department, accessing US Census data from the latter. The company was also investigating an attempted breach of the education department’s website, as reported by the New York Times.

Police probe woman’s cause of death after body found in Brisbane unit industrial bin

Detectives are working to determine whether the death of a woman, who was found in an industrial bin at an inner-Brisbane unit complex, is suspicious.

The grim discovery came as workers were emptying a bin on Friday at the unit complex on Lambert Street in Kangaroo Point.

Veolia, which manages Brisbane City Council’s residential waste removal, said its workers enacted an emergency service response after the discovery.

“As is standard procedure, our team checked the bin’s contents before tipping and immediately stopped the work,” the Veolia spokeswoman said.

“Our main priority is the welfare of our team members. We are providing support and will continue to do so for as long as necessary.”

Police are investigating after a woman’s body was found in a bin at a unit building in Brisbane’s inner-city.

Officers received reports a human body had been found unresponsive at a building on Lambert Street in Kangaroo Point just after 11.50am on Friday.

Iran is awaiting an official US response to its proposal to reopen the strait of Hormuz and end fighting in the Middle East war as Donald Trump was reported to have rejected the deal.

Iran raised the diplomatic initiative at the UN general assembly in New York, saying it had been transmitted to the Americans via Qatari mediators and could reopen the strategic waterway and put an end to hostilities in the region within seven days.

But the US president is sceptical and has told his staff that he sees a renewed bombing campaign as likely after the November US midterm elections, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed US officials.

‘Unabomber’ Review: A Portrait of the Terrorist as a Young Man, Given a Hokey TV-Movie Gloss

Jacob Tremblay doesn't convince as the teenage Ted Kaczynski in this Netflix filler, which alternates a semi-interesting psychological origin story with a by-the-numbers procedural following his capture.

The Unabomber may be a figure of enduring public fascination, but it’s hard to see that extending to “Unabomber,” Netflix‘s unimaginatively titled and prosaically assembled drama about how domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski was radicalized, and how he was caught. Alternating between a standard-issue procedural thriller, dramatizing the FBI’s final year of investigation on the case, and psychologically revealing flashbacks to the 16-year-old Kaczynski’s freshman year at Harvard, Janus Metz‘s film has some built-in intrigue from its subject matter alone, but rote dialogue and autopilot true-crime styling do little to fire the imagination. Meanwhile, the dual timelines never spur or inform each other in any meaningful way; the sense that two disparate but half-baked Unabomber projects have been unhappily welded together is hard to shake.

‘Unabomber’ Review: Jacob Tremblay and Russell Crowe in a Facile Rendering of Ted Kaczynski’s College Days

Director Janus Metz's thriller, also starring Shailene Woodley, attempts to plumb the depths of a pivotal moment in the infamous murderer’s life — his time as a Harvard student.

While Netflix has Ryan Murphy busy investigating (or flat-out making up) the motives of killers like Jeffery Dahmer, the Menendez Brothers and Lizzie Borden, the streamer has enlisted director Janus Metz to tell the story of Ted Kaczynski, the math prodigy turned reclusive murderer known as the Unabomber — also the movie’s title. But Unabomber, written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, is not some sweeping birth-to-death survey of Kaczynski’s life. It instead focuses on a young Kaczynski’s time at Harvard University, where he participated in a brutal psychological study that, in the movie’s framing, may have helped form the anarchic worldview that eventually led to his infamous deeds.

To the modern true-crime aficionado, the Unabomber must present an intriguing dilemma. To those of us who were around during his yearslong campaign of bombings and his subsequent capture, he’s a figure just familiar and haunting enough that we come to the story with a mixture of anticipation and preconception. (I once had a professor who’d lost a hand to one of the Unabomber’s explosives; proximity to a victim tends to render the perpetrator uniquely terrifying — and maybe also a little fascinating.) To later generations, though, he might not seem as fearsome as some of the grislier, more hands-on serial killers, the demon cannibals and psycho snatchers who regularly inspire suburban nightmares and streaming miniseries. No, the Unabomber, a onetime math genius and professor named Ted Kaczynski, was basically a hermit nerd in a Montana cabin who mailed bombs to scientists, engineers, professors, and other elites. In that sense, he was more a terrorist than a serial killer — a deadly lunatic with an agenda who killed three and injured dozens. And his agenda (once he deigned to reveal it, following years of terrorizing and murdering his fellow humans) was greeted by some as a compelling one: The 1995 publication of Kaczynski’s 35,000-word manifesto, Industrial Society and Its Future, captured the imagination of many a neo-Luddite writer and thinker. (Perhaps ironically, growing interest in his anti-tech treatise was helped along by the internet, which began expanding into everyday life around the same time.)

NRLW Prelim Final: Roosters v Raiders

Having swept all before them in the regular season, the Roosters sit one win away from a shot at redemption in the NRLW decider.

The heartbreaking loss to the Broncos in last year's grand final still stings and the Roosters will earn a chance at redemption if they can eliminate the Raiders at Allianz Stadium.

Now in their fourth season, the Green Machine are playing finals for the first time and will have taken plenty of confidence out of a 6-0 shutout against Wests Tigers last week.

With weapons across the park and a gun playmaker in Zahara Temara, the Raiders are not to be taken lightly, and Roosters coach John Strange is sure to have drilled home to his players the need to be switched on for the full 70 if they are to progress to a sixth grand final in nine seasons.

NRLW finals live updates: Injury concerns mount for Roosters in tense prelim

Chante Temara double pumps and throws a nice crash pass to Dodd, who crashes over under the sticks and the Raiders are back in this one.

Roosters lead 16-10 with less than 10 minutes to go in the prelim final.

Elliott is pinged for a high tackle, inviting the Raiders into the red zone.

“They have to take this opportunity,” Brenton Speed said on Nine.

Spoiler alert – the Raiders didn’t take the opportunity, with Sergis coming up with a clutch one-on-one strip to bail the Roosters out of trouble.

12 minutes to go and the Chooks lead by two converted tries.

Penrith put heartbreak behind them to claim Jersey Flegg Cup

Penrith Panthers have put last year’s Grand Final heartbreak behind to claim the Jersey Flegg Cup premiership with a commanding 62-16 victory over Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at CommBank Stadium today.

The result made up for the disappointment the Panthers experienced in 2025, after making the decider against Melbourne Storm but proving no match for them on the day after going down 38-16.

“We learnt our lessons from last year, and we concurred it this year,” Panthers prop Judah Galuvao said.

“I am just so proud of the boys, we have so much belief and I am just so happy and over the moon.”

    Panthers crowned Jersey Flegg premiers

The Panthers stormed to the 2026 Jersey Flegg Cup title with a 62-16 Grand Final win over Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at CommBank Stadium.

Led by captain Jenson Tuaoi, man-of-the-match Hokafonu Lemoto and hat-trick heroes Tua Patea and Darcy Feltham, the Panthers dominated the Bulldogs from start to finish in the Under-21s premiership decider.

Tuaoi orchestrated a flying Panthers start, with the crafty hooker assisting early tries to five-eighth Patea and prop Lemoto.

Firing on all cylinders, the Panthers then went long distance for Harry Wald to finish off an impressive team try before lock Kye Raven scored an explosive solo try.

AI boom could end in nasty global recession

As home values enter freefall, the RBA is doubling down on higher rates, setting the stage for what could be the worst property crash in the nation’s history.

While the housing market tanks, the Reserve Bank of Australia could not give a rat’s bum about the first-order consequences. Home values across the five largest capitals have fallen 3.9 per cent over the past three months, equivalent to a 15 per cent annualised decline.

Sydney is worse, losing 4.6 per cent in a quarter, or 17 per cent annualised. Melbourne is shrinking at a 13.5 per cent annual pace. Even the erstwhile boom markets of Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide, which still show positive year-on-year gains, are now falling at double-digit annualised rates.

Has the RBA already wiped out the home ownership gains from tax changes?

The dream of home ownership is getting even more distant for many young Australians. (ABC News: John Gunn)

A rate rise is estimated to cause an immediate 5 per cent reduction in home purchases.

Economic modelling suggests the home ownership rate would fall by 0.3 of a percentage point and take more than a decade to recover.

Markets and economists are almost certain the RBA will announce a rate rise on Tuesday.

Each standard interest rate increase could be locking close to 30,000 households out of home ownership, some of them for more than a decade, research suggests.

The modelling was conducted by James Graham, a senior lecturer in economics at the University of Sydney, along with Avish Sharma, a PhD candidate at Northwestern University who is a former analyst at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

How much Australian property is overvalued by now

Houses are overvalued by 38 per cent across Australia’s capital cities, new analysis reveals, suggesting prices could have further to fall in the market downturn.

The data, from AMP chief economist Shane Oliver, indicates median house prices in every capital city are overvalued by at least a quarter, when compared to average rents – adjusted for inflation – over the past 40 years.

Sydney houses are overvalued by 41 per cent and Melbourne 24 per cent. But Brisbane – where house values increased by 10.3 per cent in just the year to the end of August, according to Cotality – is the most overvalued capital, at 61 per cent. Perth houses are 28 per cent overvalued.

Live: Piastri starts third in Baku for Azerbaijan GP

Oscar Piastri starts the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix from third on the grid, with Mercedes' George Russell on pole.

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli starts 16th after a crash in qualifying.

Follow all the action from the Baku City Circuit in our live blog.

His Aston Martin has developed an issue and he's told to stop the car.

There is a yellow flag shown at Turn Three, just as Max Verstappen thinks about having a look at Oscar Piastri into the left hander.

Stroll has got quite good at parking the cars this season, to be fair…

This is good stuff from Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen is just being held at just over a second behind the Australian as things stand.

What are the tyre strategy options for the Azerbaijan GP?

In other years, four different manufacturers in the first four grid slots would have been cause for note, now it’s merely business-as-usual in an exceptionally competitive 2026 season. One thing that did raise eyebrows, however, is the margin of George Russell’s eventual pole position.

Mercedes have looked rapid all weekend, but with championship leader Kimi Antonelli clipping a wall in Q1, Russell’s run to fifth pole of the season was serene – but his eight-tenths of a second margin to second-placed Charles Leclerc was exceptional.

But what do we have in store on Saturday? Almost certainly a one-stop race, but myriad possibilities within that. All three tyre compounds are in contention, the pit windows are wide, and, while it’s never particularly easy to pass in Baku, the combination of active aero and greater energy deployment options suggest we’re going to see something a bit different…

2026 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX – QUALIFYING REPORT

Find out what happened during FP3 and Qualifying in Azerbaijan, and get the thoughts of McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Drivers Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Team Principal Andrea Stella.

The McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team secured a decent Qualifying result at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix this afternoon, with Oscar third and Lando fifth after a complicated opening two days of running around the Baku City Circuit.

With the upgrades introduced this weekend performing as expected, the characteristics of the circuit have not played to the strengths of the MCL40. Despite this, Oscar delivered a strong performance throughout the session to secure a place on the second row, missing the first row by just one thousandth of a second. Lando was also in contention near the front but left some performance on the table in Q3, with his final run aborted following a small lock-up resulting in him being unable to improve his lap time.
