Kia driving Australian Open 2026 with more EVs than ever before

Kia is celebrating a milestone 25 years as a major partner with the Australian Open, with this year's player vehicle fleet including 55 EVs.

Kia is partnering with the Australian Open tennis Grand Slam for the 25th year, and its 130-strong vehicle fleet for the event has more electric vehicles (EVs) than ever.

Making up those 55 all-electric vehicles are the EV5 and EV9 SUVs, while the 75 hybrids will be divided across the Carnival MPV and Sportage SUV.

Nadal to make Aus Open return for 'Night of Legends' with Ash Barty and Scott Dylon

MELBOURNE: The 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will return to Melbourne for a special appearance at the Australian Open’s Night of Legends, scheduled for February 1, the same day as the men’s singles final. The 39-year-old tennis great will be joined by former world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and Australian wheelchair tennis legend Dylan Alcott.

Nadal, who retired from tennis in November 2024, lifted the trophy at Melbourne Park in 2009 and 2022, needing five sets in both finals to win the title. In the 2022 final, Nadal mounted an epic comeback from two sets to love down against Daniil Medvedev to reign victorious after a five-hour, 24-minute battle. The Spaniard tallied a 77-16 match record at the season's first major, according to the ATP Win/Loss Index.

Kia Putting 55 Electric Vehicles on the Ground at Australian Open for Players

The Australian Open has begun down in Melbourne, Australia, and Kia is sponsoring it for the 25th year in a row. As it has done in recent years, it’s featuring its electric vehicle models as part of this. This year’s theme is “Move Different,” which can’t be the most exciting theme phrase it’s ever come up with, but it’s something.

Electric vehicles are actually pickup up in popularity quite fast in Australia, perhaps because of how devastating various climate disasters are in the country. In December, 17% of new vehicle sales were plugin vehicle sales, and 10% of sales were pure battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales.

Pongal 2026: 9 traditional South Indian dishes for Pongal celebrations

Pongal is the harvest festival of Southern India and this year it will be celebrated on 14 January. It is a festival of heartfelt thanksgiving to the Sun God, the earth, and the cattle for abundance and prosperity. Celebrated in South India, the festival revolves around kolams, rituals and traditional feast. Here are a few traditional South Indian dishes that make Pongal celebrations even more delicious.

It is one of the most important dishes and is made with moong dal, rice, jaggery, ghee, cashews, raisins, and aromatic cardamom. It is traditionally made outdoors in earthen pots.

It is the savoury version of pongal, where rice and lentils are cooked in ghee along with black pepper, cumin, ginger, and curry leaves and is served with coconut chutney and sambar.

Date & time, Bhogi Pandigai & Sankranti timing, rituals, cultural significance

Bhogi Pandigai in 2026 will be celebrated on Tuesday, 13 january 2026. It is observed one day before Makar Sankranti/Pongal, marking the first day of the four‑day Sankranti/Pongal festival cycle in tamil Nadu, andhra pradesh, and Telangana.

Bhogi is essentially the lead‑in festival to Sankranti, celebrated the day before the solar event.

Bhogi (also called Bhogi Pandigai) is an ancient harvest festival rooted in renewal, positivity, and gratitude. It is widely celebrated in Tamil Nadu, andhra pradesh, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka as the opening ritual of Sankranti/Pongal festivities.

The name “Bhogi” itself reflects the spirit of the day — letting go of old things, old habits, and negativity to make space for new beginnings, prosperity and joy.

Of course, in men’s tennis, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are getting close.

Australian tennis great Paul McNamee even goes as far as saying Alcaraz is the best all-round player the world has ever seen.

“I have never seen tennis played like that – he is a virtuoso,” McNamee said.

Alcaraz’s peers are a little more circumspect in their praise, but former world No.1 Daniil Medvedev admitted last week, when asked about the current dominance of the pair, that the gap the top two ranked male players had opened up would be difficult to close.
