EV maker aims to overtake Toyota, as it plans to spend £1.8bn to build five-minute flash chargers in Europe

The Chinese car company BYD has said it aims to be the world’s biggest automaker within the next five years.

Targeting Toyota’s long-held top spot, BYD’s founder and chair, Wang Chuanfu said he was confident it could overtake global rivals through rapid advances in battery technology and fast charging, as well as growing production overseas, including Europe.

“BYD will truly become the number one automaker globally in terms of scale in five years,” he said at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in Shenzhen.

BYD outsold Ford, and now it thinks it can catch Toyota as the world’s No. 1 automaker

BYD is already the world’s largest EV maker, but the company’s CEO is confident it will become the world’s leading global automaker within the next five years.

After it stopped making cars powered solely by internal combustion engines (ICE) in 2022 to focus on battery electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles, BYD’s big bet has paid off so far.

With over 4.6 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold last year, which includes EVs and PHEVs, BYD surpassed Ford for the first time, ranking as the sixth largest global automaker.

According to BYD’s CEO, Wang Chuanfu, the Chinese EV giant is just getting started with new battery and charging tech set to drive growth over the next few years.

Federal lawsuit aims to stop UFC event on the White House South Lawn

A lawsuit filed Saturday against the federal government asks a judge to stop an Ultimate Fighting Championship event on the White House lawn scheduled this week.

The suit, which the Public Integrity Project, a watchdog group, filed on behalf of two plaintiffs, is another incident in which private citizens or activist groups have tried to stymie projects championed by President Donald Trump.

The event, a fight night purportedly in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary, is scheduled for June 14, Trump’s birthday.

The lawsuit says UFC CEO Dana White, a longtime Trump ally who was a campaign surrogate for him, has denied that the event’s timing is a birthday celebration for Trump. But, the suit says, White acknowledged that the fight was Trump’s idea.

Lawsuit seeks to halt ‘corrupt’ UFC event at the White House on Trump’s birthday

The plaintiffs said they brought the case to “uphold the rule of law” and “protect our nation’s most cherished monuments from corrupt exploitation.”

A new lawsuit seeks to halt the “UFC Freedom 250” event that is scheduled for this coming weekend, calling it “deeply corrupt” and arguing that it runs afoul of federal regulations.

The plaintiffs are activist Susan Douglas and Vietnam War veteran Paul Romano. Represented by lawyers with the Public Integrity Project, they said in their complaint that they brought the case “to seek judicial relief for their injuries, uphold the rule of law, and protect our nation’s most cherished monuments from corrupt exploitation.”

Lawsuit aims to stop UFC fight at the White House

Two Virginia residents have filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the UFC fight President Donald Trump is holding at the White House as part of celebrations for the nation’s 250th birthday.

The lawsuit, filed Saturday by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of a Vietnam War veteran and a civic activist, argues the structure erected on the White House grounds is not authorized without congressional approval or environmental review.

It also argues the use of the White House grounds “to stage a private, for-profit sports event, with all the promotional and branding opportunities that accompany such access” will financially benefit UFC President Dana White and Trump himself, citing a report in the spring that Trump bought $50,000 in stock in UFC’s parent company.
