Airbnb host accused of using AI image of blocked toilet to claim damages
Alban said The A Family submitted this photo as proof he blocked the toilet. The ABC ran the image through Google's SynthID Detector, which found it had been made or edited with Google AI. (Supplied)
An Airbnb host is accused of using an AI-doctored photo of an overflowing toilet to claim hundreds of dollars from a guest to unclog it.
The request to pay for repairs to the backed-up toilet was just one in a string of claims and counterclaims between a French tourist, Alban, and his host, The A Family.
Airbnb did not confirm if action would be taken against The A Family after their damage claim was denied.
Airbnb Host Accused of Using AI-Doctored Photo of Blocked Toilet To Claim $1,500 in Damages
An Airbnb host sought A$1,755 (£916) from a guest over alleged property damage, submitting a photograph of an overflowing toilet to support a A$1,500 (£783) repair invoice.
However, Google's AI detection technology flagged the image as having been created or edited using artificial intelligence, raising questions about the potential misuse of AI-generated evidence in online accommodation disputes.
The case involves a French tourist identified only as Alban, who stayed at two properties in Hobart, Tasmania, managed by a host operating as The A Family. He spent around two weeks at the properties in August and September.
Two days after checking out, Alban left the host a one-star review following a disagreement over checkout arrangements. The host subsequently submitted a request for A$1,755 in compensation.
