    Ariana Grande: petal Album Review

Ariana Grande’s much-scrutinized drift into a higher vocal register in recent years, to hear her tell it, is an act of self-preservation. “If I have a long day of press or I have to sing, I’ll place [my voice] a little higher,” she explained on a podcast in 2025. “That is just something that’s healthy for the voice.” As one of the most visible pop stars on the planet, she’s become adept at shielding herself: Take the oversized hoodies she frequently wore on pap walks in 2018, which she described as reflecting her desire to “hide away” as she navigated the overwhelming combined grief of the 2017 terrorist attack on her arena show in Manchester and the death of Mac Miller. Or the way she seemed to continue to perform the peppy, pink-hued role of Glinda off-screen during the back-to-back Wicked press tours in 2024 and 2025. All to say, when it comes to Grande, what seems light and carefree can also be a carefully constructed form of armor.

Ariana Grande’s ‘Petal’ Introduces an Angry and Angular Ari: Album Review

On the surface, Ariana Grande’s “Petal” is a sister album to its predecessor, 2024’s “Eternal Sunshine” — it was made with the same two collaborators, Ilya Salmanzadeh and Max Martin, and it also was entirely written, performed and produced by the three of them. Usually, that formula means a chapter two: more of the same but different.

Not this time. This sister is darker, moodier and a lot more blunt than “Sunshine,” and her emotions are more volatile, less heartbroken, and much less internalized. It’s a different Ariana, musically and especially lyrically.

Grande braced her fans for a change in a widely circulated interview earlier this week. “I think [fans] will feel familiarity and comfort in it,” she said of the album. “Yet at the same time it’s very experimental and different for me, and also I wrote from a place that I don’t usually, which is unfiltered rage,” she laughed. “I usually am too shy to tap into that, and I think this time I didn’t filter as much as I usually do.”

Matt Corby Adds Second & Final Melbourne Date To 2026 Australian Tour

Matt Corby's upcoming 'Tragic Magic' tour has been met with incredible demand.

Matt Corby’s upcoming Tragic Magic tour has been met with incredible demand, with the soul music troubadour adding another night for especially keen fans in Melbourne.

Due to overwhelming demand for tickets, Corby’s Newcastle show immediately sold out. Tickets are also selling fast in Melbourne, with a second and final show at the Forum announced today.

Corby will present tracks from his latest album, Tragic Magic, as well as fan-favourites from across his discography, when he tours across the country this June. Joining him on all dates is special guest Gretta Ray.

Matt Corby’s heart-hurting vocal capabilities bring Daniel Merriweather to mind

Soulful brass, heart-rending strings, cymbal swells, hand claps, deft drumming, sultry bass, layered harmonies – you’ll find a song for many moods on Tragic Magic.

“I never know what’s up anymore…” – King Of Denial, the gently bopping opener, shrugs; it’s giving que sera sera.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

While coming up with Big Ideas – with its plucky bass and conversational guitar flourishes – Corby has said he pictured a “cool guy in a skivvy, slightly gyrating. But in a very respectful way,” which we now cannot unsee. Suggestion for Corby: please add a beret to this ensemble, since the song would go down a treat in a jazz club.

Inside the Long Eight-Year Wait for J. Cole’s The Fall-Off

When Childish Gambino released “This Is America” in 2018, the visual essay split open a wound that had been festering in plain sight. Here was Black culture hemorrhaging into entertainment pipelines worldwide while the bodies of Black men stacked up at the hands of police. The gap between consumption and consequence had grown grotesque, and hip-hop’s youngest voices seemed to embody that grotesquerie with precision. Flashy spending, drug-soaked aesthetics, face tattoos, disposable violence—a generation of SoundCloud rappers had crystallized every stereotype white audiences craved, gaining overnight riches through platforms that would forget them by next quarter’s earnings report.
