Officials said emergency services were called to the suburb of Engadine about 3.30pm amid reports a child had been struck by an ebike rider. A five-year-old boy was treated at the scene by paramedics for serious leg injuries before he was taken to Sydney children’s hospital. He is in stable condition.

Officers were told the e-bike rider did not stop and left the scene before police arrived. They are searching for two people in relation to the incident.

Anyone with information related to the crash has been urged to contact police.

Interior door handles may not operate in certain Peugeot vehicles produced between 2024 and 2025, with a software update required to fix them.

Distributor Inchcape is recalling over 500 current-generation Peugeot vehicles across four model lines to fix an issue that may prevent occupants from being able to exit their vehicle.

"Due to a software issue, the interior door handles may deactivate unexpectedly while the engine is running. This may prevent one or more doors from being opened from inside the vehicle," the company says in its recall notice.

"If the interior door handles deactivate, occupants may be unable to exit the vehicle in an emergency, increasing the risk of serious injury or death."

Rinehart almost doubles US shares to $8 billion, led by backing Elon Musk’s SpaceX

Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, has almost doubled her bet on the US stock market, with her portfolio of shares there now worth $US5.7 billion ($8 billion).

Filings to the US Securities Commission overnight reveal that Rinehart’s ownership of US shares increased from $US3.3 billion at the end of March to $US5.7 billion at the end of June.

The massive jump in the value of her portfolio was driven in part by the $US1.4 billion value of her investment in technology billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Rinehart spent $US1 billion buying shares in the sought-after float on Nasdaq in June, equating to about 7.4 million SpaceX shares. The mining magnate’s friendship with Musk has evolved via their mutual support of Donald Trump during the 2024 US presidential election. Rinehart has described Musk as a “truly exceptional person”.

‘A new trajectory’: EVs now almost quarter of Australia’s new car sales as fuel crisis bites

More electric vehicles sold in first half of 2026 than whole of last year, new data shows

Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast

Australians bought more electric vehicles in the first six months of 2026 than the whole of the previous year, new data shows, as the ongoing crisis in the Middle East causes uncertainty about petrol prices.

There were 103,855 battery electric vehicles (EVs) sold nationally between January and June, compared with 103,269 in 2025, according to data from VFacts and the Electric Vehicle Council.

Battery EVs as a share of new car sales doubled compared with the same time last year, making up 23.4% of sales in June 2026 compared with 10.3% in June 2025.

Soaring EV sales to shield Australia from fuel shortages

Soaring electric vehicle uptake is materially reducing Australia’s petrol demand, as experts forecast the ongoing global oil crisis could put enough clean cars on the road to leave the country less exposed to future fuel shortages.

Fuel prices hit record highs in March due to Iran shutting off oil exports via the key shipping channel in the Strait of Hormuz, in response to the United States’ missile attack.

EV sales soared in response. There are now about half a million battery-only electric vehicles on the road, which, based on average driving patterns and fuel consumption, are estimated to avoid around 600 million litres of petrol use each year.

Video: Should Australia set an end date for selling ICE Cars?

During 2026 about 200,000 new EV’s will have been sold and public fast charging networks on highways were built to deal with a much smaller number of cars, what happens when everyone hits the road at once during school holidays?!

Neerav from Electrify Everything and Sam from The Driven argue over which companies should actually be paying to fix that lack of charging gap and I get a bit fired up about a rich corporate sector that’s been getting a free ride for years. Australia should set a hard date to stop selling petrol, diesel and hybrid cars.

We look at which EV brands might quietly give up on Australia, and why some famous established car brands just can’t seem to make it work here anymore. We also talk about those annoying warning beeps, bings and bongs in many new electric cars but some manufacturers like the car I’m driving in for this video have much better not annoying software.

BYD almost topples Toyota as EV sales soar again

Electric vehicles sales in Australia surged to a record last month and accounted for more than one in five new cars sold, while Chinese maker BYD almost toppled Toyota as the country’s most popular brand.

Australians purchased 32,570 EVs in June, equivalent to 23.3 per cent of the total 140,058 sales – itself a record – and up from 8.4 per cent of the total market in January this year, data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council showed.

Electric car sales surge even as fuel prices ease

Electric car sales continue to surge in Australia even as the energy crisis fades, and tax breaks on fuel begin to phase out, with both BYD and Tesla selling record numbers of vehicles last month.

BYD recorded an astonishing 18,881 vehicles in June, up from 8211 in May. Its rival Tesla sold 8670 vehicles in June, surpassing its previous record of 6433 set in May. In June last year Tesla sold 4589 cars in Australia.

The last time a car company in Australia, aside from market-leader Toyota, sold more than 17,000 vehicles in a single month, it was Holden in 2004.

The original 32¢ fuel excise cut, introduce by the federal government to help ease cost pressure, expired at the end of June. It has been extended at a halved rate of 16¢ a litre from July 1 to August 2. After August 2 it will return to its full rate.

Almost 70,000 reported missing in ‘race against the clock’ after Venezuela earthquakes

La Guaira: Tensions flared on Saturday as desperation grew among anguished residents of the Venezuelan state of La Guaira, where rescuers and civilians searched for earthquake survivors amid a sharply rising death toll.

Venezuela’s government said the number of people killed rose to 1430 on Saturday, local time (Sunday AEST) and families reported at least 68,900 people missing, three days after the one-two punch of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that devastated the South American nation.

Venezuelans looking for loved ones and neighbours used shovels, heavy equipment, ropes and bare hands atop mounds of toppled concrete throughout La Guaira, one of the country’s hardest-hit states.

Venezuela earthquakes: death toll rises again to more than 1,400

Search for survivors continues with nearly 70,000 people reported unaccounted for by their family members

The death toll in the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this week ‌has ‌risen to ‌1,430, according to one of the country’s top politicians Jorge Rodríguez.

Another 3,200 people were injured and 3,100 left homeless by the disaster, the National Assembly president added, speaking on state television.

Rescuers are still searching for survivors after the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday evening, flattening buildings in the north of the country. At least 68,900 people have been reported unaccounted for by their families.
