Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and the Misreading of Science Fiction

Why does anyone care what Elon Musk thinks of Homer’s Odyssey, or Christopher Nolan’s? Musk is promising to use AI to generate a “historically accurate” version of the The Odyssey—turning epic poetry into atrocious slop—even as AI companies are literally destroying books to ingest them as data more cheaply. Meanwhile, Musk and other Silicon Valley billionaires are building a world they read about, as boys, in the pages of books they failed to understand. I think of that world as the Artificial State.

The Artificial State is less a state than a dream of being without one, the dream of the severing of humans not only from the natural world but also from one another, every umbilical cord cut. An extreme form of this dream is the actual plan of a very small number of staggeringly powerful 21st-century merchant princes, Silicon Valley millionaires and billionaires who, seeking escape from the prison of their own bodies, intend to have their heads frozen when they die and, possibly, consciousnesses uploaded onto computers, an idea that, like much of what they want, comes from a story published nearly a century ago in a science fiction magazine for boys.

Sam Altman says we’re ‘in the singularity’ with AI. Here’s why he’s wrong

These are the words of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, speaking on the Relentless podcast on July 25.

He added: “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, and I think it’s going to be incredible, hugely positive, awesome for the world”.

Days earlier, OpenAI had disclosed that two of its artificial intelligence (AI) models, during an internal cyber security evaluation, had escaped their sealed testing environment, reached the open internet, and broken into the infrastructure of the AI platform Hugging Face, which confirmed the intrusion.

But what exactly is “the singularity”? And is Altman right that we are in it?

Sam Altman says we are in the singularity: 'This is the moment'

OpenAI's CEO says we've reached a point in the AI race that is the stuff of science fiction novels.

"We are now, like, in the singularity," Sam Altman said on Saturday's episode of the "Relentless" podcast.

The singularity is often regarded as the point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and begins advancing at a pace that's difficult for people to predict or control.

That felt like the case last week when an AI agent powered by OpenAI's latest models went rogue and — with a singular purpose, according to OpenAI — broke out of its digital sandbox and hacked into datasets at Hugging Face, another AI company, all to solve a benchmark designed to test hacking ability. Hugging Face's CEO called it "unprecedented."

Sam Altman says AI will be better CEO of OpenAI than he is

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, believes artificial intelligence will eventually perform the job of running his company better than he can. Speaking at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February 2026, Altman stated that “AI superintelligence at some point on its development curve would be capable of doing a better job being the CEO of a major company than any executive, certainly me.” He added that this timeline is not distant: on OpenAI’s current trajectory, the company may be only a couple of years away from early versions of true superintelligence.

Altman has repeatedly signaled his openness to being replaced. In November 2025, he said on the “Conversations with Tyler” podcast that he would be ashamed if OpenAI is not the first major company run by an AI CEO. He framed this as a thought experiment: “What would have to happen for an AI CEO to be able to do a much, much better job of running OpenAI than me?”

Sam Altman declares AI has reached its singularity moment, and crypto markets should pay attention

OpenAI's CEO says humanity has crossed the 'event horizon' toward superintelligence, with massive implications for AI-adjacent crypto sectors

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, published a blog post on June 10, 2025, titled “The Gentle Singularity,” in which he made arguably the boldest claim of his career. Humanity, he wrote, has crossed the “event horizon” of artificial intelligence development, and the process of building digital superintelligence has officially begun.

“We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started,” Altman wrote. “Humanity is close to building digital superintelligence.”

The blog post frames the singularity not as some dramatic, overnight transformation, but as a gradual acceleration that’s already underway. Altman laid out a specific timeline. By 2026, he expects AI systems capable of generating genuinely novel scientific insights, not just summarizing existing research but producing original discoveries. By 2027, he predicts robots performing real-world physical tasks will be commonplace.

Elon Musk trial against Sam Altman to reveal OpenAI power struggle

The trial’s outcome could sway the balance of power in AI, and jury selection starts on Monday.

Technology tycoons Elon Musk and Sam Altman are poised to face off in a high-stakes trial revolving around the alleged betrayal, deceit and unbridled ambition that blurred the bickering billionaires’ once-shared vision for the development of artificial intelligence.

The trial, which is scheduled to begin on Monday with jury selection, centres on the 2015 birth of ChatGPT maker OpenAI as a nonprofit start-up primarily funded by Musk before evolving into a capitalistic venture now valued at $852bn.

The trial’s outcome could sway the balance of power in AI, breakthrough technology that is increasingly being feared as a potential job killer and an existential threat to humanity’s survival.
