‘I was angry after that’: The Samoan high shot that hasn’t been forgotten

Stefano Utoikamanu has little recollection of his debut for Tonga last year after a regulation hit-up resulted in him being knocked out inside the opening minute by Samoan front-rower Francis Molo.

Molo was placed on report for his dangerous tackle in the Pacific Nations Championships match, but the Storm enforcer’s day ended immediately.

“It was pretty crazy because I was so excited to play for Tonga,” Utoikamanu, 26, said.

“I got a high shot. But it’s how the game is. They miss some of them, unfortunately that was one they missed. I was angry after that. But it’s a year on, it’s in the past, I’m just excited to go up against them again.”

Tonga driven by bitter memories of 2025 Samoa shellacking

Forgetting last year’s Samoa-Tonga Pacific Championships game could be forgiven for most neutral fans. A lot has happened in rugby league since.

But Tonga half Isaiya Katoa, returned from an ankle injury for tomorrow’s sold-out rematch at Commbank Stadium, can’t forget the 34-6 defeat at Suncorp Stadium.

He doesn’t want to, either, because his harsh critique of why it happened is driving Tonga’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

“We were well aware of how disappointing we were last year and we just made a promise to each other that… ,” the erudite 22-year-old’s said, before correcting himself.

Excitement has been building for weeks ahead of tonight’s sold-out game at CommBank Stadium in Sydney, which kicks off at 10.05pm NZT.

In Auckland, the biggest Polynesian city in the world, spontaneous parades and celebrations have popped up all around over the past few weeks since the tournament started.

Samoan and Tongan flags have been particularly prominent this week as the communities show their pride and support for their respective teams.

Australian rock legend Angry Anderson dies, aged 79

Rose Tattoo frontman Angry Anderson has died just weeks after being admitted to a hospital in Germany during the Australian rock band's European tour.

The 79-year-old singer spent 50 years in the music industry and also became a television presenter, charity worker and youth advocate.

Rose Tattoo's hits included Bad Boy for Love, Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw and We Can't Be Beaten, while Anderson found solo success with the song Suddenly.

Rock singer, actor, youth advocate and charity ambassador Angry Anderson has died.

Anderson's family and band mates announced in a statement today that the 79-year-old had died on Monday, surrounded by loved ones in Australia.

Angry Anderson was far from his rock persona as he turned pain into purpose

Gary Stephen Anderson became known to the world as Angry Anderson, as the frontman of Aussie hard rock band Rose Tattoo in 1976.

But the Melbourne boy was far from what his rock ‘n’ roll persona would lead you to believe – something fellow rocker Jimmy Barnes alluded to in his tribute to the music legend, who died on Monday, aged 79.

“Angry Anderson sang from his heart with power and conviction. But don’t let that tough outside fool you,” Barnes wrote on social media.

Charles Leclerc hit the wall in the closing stages of the Monaco Grand Prix while running in the podium places.

Charles Leclerc was left to rue ongoing brake problems after dramatically retiring from his home Grand Prix in Monaco, describing the situation as “not acceptable” and “impossible” to manage.

Leclerc held the final podium place for the majority of Sunday’s encounter in the Principality, having gained a spot on the opening lap when Red Bull rival Max Verstappen struggled to pull away from the grid and retired.

‘I look like an idiot’: F1 star sprays team after chaotic race as Piastri misses podium

In his hometown event, Monaco-born Charles Leclerc ended his F1 race fuming at his Ferrari team after he crashed out while chasing a podium.

Kimi Antonelli managed to navigate all the chaos to win the Monaco Grand Prix, making it five wins in a row this season.

Earlier, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll had crashed at turn 19, the final corner, leading to a yellow flag on the course.

Then on the 66th lap, with Leclerc in third, he found himself in the same predicament in the same spot.

That led to another safety car and a red flag, which stopped the race.

Big Brother Australia fans fume over major rule break: 'Completely lost touch'

Big Brother Australia fans were left furious on Thursday when one housemate broke a major rule without repercussion.

Bruce was spotted sunbathing with fellow contestant Coco in the backyard of the house when he managed to sneak in some interaction with the outside world.

Situated in the Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast, attendees on the nearby Tail Spin ride shouted out to Bruce as they got a bird's-eye view of the yard.

Despite being forbidden from interacting with the outside world, Bruce broke the major rule as he realised one of the theme park-goers was his brother.

Certain he could hear some familiar voices calling out as the ride swung overhead, Bruce hopped onto one of the sunbeds, shouting: 'It's Jonah! That's my brother!'
