Pauline Hanson said this week that she’d take a closer look at future videos in her Please Explain cartoons, a step towards taking responsibility for content made in her name.

That was after the One Nation leader apologised for mocking independent Tasmanian senator and army veteran Jacqui Lambie’s vaginal prolapse in an episode of what Hanson describes as her satirical take on politics.

When Lambie first objected to the cartoon, Hanson told her Senate colleague to “lighten up” and “get over it”. “It’s actually satirical,” she said.

AFP’s Krissy Barrett warns One Nation cartoons can spark ‘reaction’ in febrile environment

The news: Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett has responded to questions about One Nation’s two-year-old Please Explain cartoon showing politicians being struck by a car, saying these types of events can result in a “reaction” in a febrile and complex environment.

Speaking on ABC Insiders on Sunday morning AEDT, in a discussion about the alleged attack on Helen Haines and public discourse, Barrett said the police does “see examples where there are particular announcements, or … things like [the cartoon] you’ve just described, there is a reaction among the community”.

“I feel really strongly it’s important for me to say we are not here to police free speech; we are not here to intervene in political discourse. But I would challenge any Australian to read some of these threats and some of the abuse that is reported to us from federal parliamentarians, and for anyone to argue that that is free speech or political discourse,” Barrett said.
