Amazon accidentally announces further 16,000 layoffs in AI pivot

Amazon is laying off another 16,000 workers and further embracing artificial intelligence in its latest round of cuts. (Reuters: Pascal Rossignol)

Amazon has announced the slashing of 16,000 jobs within the company as it seeks to shrink its post-pandemic workforce and embrace AI.

A misfired internal email was the first time many employees found out about the company's second round of job cuts in just six months.

Other US companies are increasingly holding off on hiring, in signs that economic uncertainty is weighing on corporate America.

Amazon has accidentally announced it plans to slash about 16,000 corporate jobs in favour of greater use of artificial intelligence, in the second round of mass lay-offs for the e-commerce company in three months.

Christchurch Airport announces new direct flights to Vanuatu with Solomon Airlines

Christchurch, New Zealand – South Island travellers will soon be able to swap winter woollies for tropical sunshine, with Solomon Airlines launching a new direct service from Christchurch to Port Vila (Vanuatu) from 1 July 2026.

The new route will be the first time there has been a commercial scheduled flight to Vanuatu from Christchurch, it will operate twice weekly on Thursday and Sunday departing Christchurch in the morning and will be flown by an Airbus A320-200. The direct flight is expected to take around four hours, delivering South Islanders straight into the heart of the South Pacific to a getaway packed with warm weather, adventure, and island hospitality.

Whilst New Zealand remains one of the most isolated countries in the world due to its geographical location, there is plenty of choice when it comes to international flights to and from the South Pacific country. New Zealand is a tourism mecca, attracting thousands of tourists from around the world every year to see its unique flora and fauna, stunning beaches, and alpine landscapes.

The country has six international airports, with the largest and busiest being Auckland Airport (AKL). AKL is the main gateway for long-haul services, with Christchurch Airport(CHC) also having a handful of year-round and seasonal long-haul services. Flights to and from Australia and the South Pacific are offered from Wellington Airport (WLG) and Christchurch (CHC). Trans-Tasman services are exclusively offered from Hamilton International Airport (HLZ), Queenstown Airport (ZQN), and Dunedin (DUD).

Solomon Airlines to start new Christchurch route

On 30 March the airline will start new services to New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Australia.

It will reestablish weekly flights between Honiara and Port Vila with an Auckland/Vila connection.

A new weekly flight between Honiara and Port Moresby will be launching on 31 March to allow connections to China Southern and other carriers flying to and from Asia.

The new twice-weekly connection between Christchurch and Port Vila will begin on 1 July.

The airline will also be adding extra flights on its Brisbane to Santo and Auckland to Port Vila services.

Elton John launches premium non-alcoholic sparkling wine for sober nights out

Elton John has launched a new premium non-alcoholic sparkling wine designed to bring Champagne-level celebration to the growing 0% drinks market.

The pop icon has unveiled Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, a sparkling Chardonnay made in Northern Italy and created in collaboration with Benchmark Drinks. The alcohol-free wine officially launches today (8 January).

Unlike traditional dealcoholised wines, the drink is produced using a fermentation process that does not generate alcohol at any stage. Instead of yeast, select bacteria are used to mirror the structure and aroma of a classic Blanc de Blancs, resulting in a brighter, fuller profile.

The sparkling features notes of apple, citrus blossom and honeysuckle, with a refined mineral finish. It also contains added green tea extract for texture and subtle tannins. The drink is vegan and vegetarian-friendly, with 19 calories per glass.

Kylie Minogue and Gary Barlow better watch out as Elton John has launched his own bubbly. The iconic star has announced Elton John Zero – A non-alcoholic sparkling wine, that was crafted alongside husband David Furnish to ensure that everyone can enjoy tipple at one of their infamous parties.

Elton said: "Elton John Zero was born from a simple yet exquisite idea – to create a world where every moment of celebration can be shared by all. Our 0% alcohol Blanc de Blancs captures the elegance, effervescence, and joy of a traditional Blanc de Blancs, without compromise. Crafted with care and intention, it embodies the art of inclusion – inviting everyone to raise a glass, savour the sparkle, and share in the timeless celebration of togetherness."

I Tried Valve's Steam Frame, Machine and Controller: SteamOS Is Coming for Your Face and TV

Valve is working on a new standalone VR headset, Xbox-sized game console and wireless controller. I tried them all at the company's HQ.

Imagine, if you will, a Steam Deck and a VR headset combining into a new gaming life form — part Meta Quest, part handheld game system. As I slid the Steam Frame over my eyes and my hands into the controller, that's exactly what I felt.

The Steam Frame is a new VR headset by gaming giant Valve, the company behind the Steam platform, but it wasn't the only new piece of hardware I tested during the course of a few hours at Valve's HQ. There's also the Steam Machine, a console-sized PC designed to connect to a television, and the Steam Controller. These three new devices are designed to work together as a complete ecosystem.
