It's Official: Anthropic Is Building an in-House Chip Team for Claude

Anthropic is building a team to design its own in-house AI chips as it faces surging demand for its models.

The AI startup is hiring engineers to design custom chips for its Claude AI model, according to a job listing and a company statement.

An Anthropic spokesperson told Business Insider that the company is building an in-house silicon team to design custom chips for Claude, the first time it has publicly confirmed the plans.

They added that Anthropic would co-design hardware and models, allowing Claude to run faster and more efficiently "at the scale our customers need."

The spokesperson said Anthropic has taken and will continue to take a "multi-chip approach" in which hardware from AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD will remain central to the AI lab's scaling efforts.

Anthropic is hiring an AI chip design team

Anthropic is building a team to design its own custom chips for AI usage.

Business Insider was first to report on the news, but Anthropic has since confirmed with TechCrunch.

The Claude maker said it is planning to co-design hardware and models to help its technology run faster and more efficiently. Last month, The Information reported that Anthropic was scouting Samsung as a potential partner for building such chips.

Anthropic’s decision to design its own chips comes as demand for Claude rises while AI companies snatch up as many AI infrastructure deals as they can.

For its part, Anthropic has inked deals with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD to access AI computing hardware. But to really scale to meet the level of demand, relying on others clearly isn’t enough.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic says it has been ordered by the US government to suspend foreigners' access to some of its advanced AI models.

The US government restrictions cite national security concerns over the AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

The news comes a day after a coalition of US state attorneys-general opened a sweeping investigation into OpenAI.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has taken its most advanced AI models offline after it was ordered by the US government to suspend access for all foreign nationals.

Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI suspended over security fears

Anthropic has suspended its powerful new AI model after US authorities raised security concerns just days following its public release.

In a statement published on its website, Anthropic said it was ordered to suspend foreign nationals from using Claude Fable 5, a program that the company self-described as "too powerful".

"The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance," the company wrote.

Anthropic and the Trump administration are involved in a separate ongoing lawsuit over an order to stop government agencies using the company's AI tools. The BBC has approached the US Department of Commerce for comment.

Anthropic disables access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to comply with government directive

Anthropic on Friday announced it's disabled access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models to comply with an export control directive from the U.S. government that cited "national security authorities."

The company said it received an order at 5:21 p.m. ET, instructing it to suspend all access to the models "by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees."

Anthropic abruptly disabled the models for all of its customers in order to ensure compliance, but said all of its other models will not be affected.

The unexpected move comes just days after Anthropic announced Fable 5 and Mythos 5, two powerful models that the company touted as state-of-the-art across a number of different industry benchmarks. Fable 5, in particular, marked the first time that Anthropic released such an advanced offering to the public, thanks to new safeguards that block responses in specific high-risk areas.

Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5

Today we’re launching Claude Fable 5: a Mythos-class1 model that we’ve made safe for general use.

Fable 5’s capabilities exceed those of any model we’ve ever made generally available. It is state-of-the-art on nearly all tested benchmarks of AI capability, showing exceptional performance in software engineering, knowledge work, vision, scientific research, and many other areas. The longer and more complex the task, the larger Fable 5’s lead over our other models.

Releasing a model this capable comes with risks. Without safeguards, Fable 5’s capabilities in areas like cybersecurity could be misused to cause serious damage. We’ve therefore launched the model with safeguards that mean queries on some topics will instead receive a response from our next-most-capable model, Claude Opus 4.8. To release the model both safely and quickly, we’ve tuned these safeguards conservatively—they’ll sometimes catch harmless requests, though they trigger, on average, in less than 5% of sessions. With more capable models arriving in the coming months, we’re working to improve our safeguards and reduce false positives as quickly as we can.

Anthropic releases ‘safe’ version of Claude Mythos AI model to public

AI company restricted access to Fable 5, its most powerful Mythos model, for months over cybersecurity concerns

Anthropic, the maker of the Claude artificial intelligence (AI) models, made a new version of its technology available to the general public on Tuesday while restricting its use in sensitive areas.

Dubbed Fable 5, the model is the first to be made widely available from the company’s new Mythos class – its most advanced lineup of AI technology, unveiled in April but restricted to a small set of partner institutions for months over cybersecurity concerns.

Anthropic promoted Fable 5 as useful for writing and debugging software code, answering complex research questions and analyzing images.

Australia now has access to Anthropic’s Claude Mythos. It may improve cyber safety – but not for everyone

Artificial intelligence (AI) giant Anthropic has expanded access to a highly advanced model deemed too dangerous for public release, including Australia in the select handful of users.

The large language model, known as Claude Mythos, is now being rolled out to an additional 150 organisations across 15 countries, including the Australian government and several local businesses, as part of Project Glasswing.

In an era where large-scale AI launches are happening on a day-by-day basis, this limited, gradual release may seem particularly surprising. But Mythos is not like most other AI systems. Instead it’s an automated tool for assessing software to find critical bugs and vulnerabilities.

Anthropic urges global freeze on AI as it warns of losing control

The world’s most valuable artificial intelligence company has called for a global freeze on the development of the most powerful AI systems, warning that humanity is approaching a point where it could lose control of the technology it is racing to build.

In a blog post published on Thursday (Friday AEST), Anthropic, the San Francisco company behind the Claude chatbot, said it would be willing to suspend work on more capable systems if it could be confident that its rivals would do the same.

“If it were possible to effectively slow the development of this technology to give ourselves more time to deal with its immense implications, we think that would likely be a good thing,” executives wrote.

Anthropic says the world should have option to ‘pause’ on AI

US firm says it will convene policymakers for discussion of dangers, in post detailing progress of its Claude model

Anthropic has floated the idea of a worldwide “temporary pause” on AI development – and said it was going to convene “policymakers” to discuss the dangers of advanced AI – in its latest release touting the capabilities of its products.

In a long post on Thursday, Anthropic detailed the progress of its AI model, Claude, towards “recursive self-improvement” – that is, being able to make better and more powerful versions of itself. Recursive self-improvement is a bugbear of AI safety researchers, viewed as the key step for AI to become superintelligent and therefore unleash widespread consequences on humanity.

Anthropic urges AI labs to pause, warns humans risk losing control

It warned that rapid advances in technology could soon allow AI systems to improve themselves faster than society can control the risks.

Anthropic is proposing that the world’s top artificial intelligence companies come up with a coordinated way to pause development of advanced AI systems, warning that the technology is improving so quickly that there’s a risk humans would lose control.

The company behind the Claude chatbot said in a blog post on Thursday that, as cutting-edge AI gets increasingly faster at carrying out tasks, “it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause” its development.

Anthropic's Mythos isn't threatening bitcoin. The real AI risk is at crypto exchanges

There's a saying in crypto: not your keys, not your coins. It's typically a warning that it's safer to keep your crypto in an offline wallet that's harder to attack than an online exchange where you don't have control over the keys to the wallet housing the funds.

So far, however, the complexity of learning how to self-secure and custody crypto has been prohibitive to many prospective crypto investors, which has allowed exchanges like Coinbase and Gemini Space Station – two of the earliest in the game – to thrive.

But with money now being more digital than ever and AI getting stronger, that narrative may be flipping. AI like Anthropic's Mythos, which is built to find software vulnerabilities at extreme speed with unprecedented accuracy, could help usher a new wave of attacks on companies built on and around crypto – an industry already working to overcome a years-long reputation of hacks, scams, and exploits.

Project Glasswing: Securing critical software for the AI era

We formed Project Glasswing because of capabilities we’ve observed in a new frontier model trained by Anthropic that we believe could reshape cybersecurity. Claude Mythos2 Preview is a general-purpose, unreleased frontier model that reveals a stark fact: AI models have reached a level of coding capability where they can surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities.

Mythos Preview has already found thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including some in every major operating system and web browser. Given the rate of AI progress, it will not be long before such capabilities proliferate, potentially beyond actors who are committed to deploying them safely. The fallout—for economies, public safety, and national security—could be severe. Project Glasswing is an urgent attempt to put these capabilities to work for defensive purposes.

Anthropic leaks part of Claude Code's internal source code

Anthropic leaked part of the internal source code for its popular artificial intelligence coding assistant, Claude Code, the company confirmed on Tuesday.

"No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed," an Anthropic spokesperson said in a statement. "This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We're rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again."

A source code leak is a blow to the startup, as it could help give software developers, and Anthropic's competitors, insight into how it built its viral coding tool. A post on X with a link to Anthropic's code has amassed more than 21 million views since it was shared at 4:23 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

Anthropic leaks its own AI coding tool’s source code in second major security breach

Anthropic has accidentally leaked the source code for its popular coding tool Claude Code.

The leak comes just days after Fortune reported that the company had inadvertently made close to 3,000 files publicly available, including a draft blog post that detailed a powerful upcoming model that presents unprecedented cybersecurity risks. The model is known internally as both “Mythos” and “Capybara,” according to the leaked blog post obtained by Fortune. The source code leak exposed around 500,000 lines of code across roughly 1,900 files. When reached for comment, Anthropic confirmed that “some internal source code” had been leaked within a “Claude Code release.”

A spokesperson said: “No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed. This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We’re rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again.”

Anthropic boss rejects Pentagon demand to drop AI safeguards

Anthropic has said it will not back down in a fight with the US Department of Defense (DoD) over how its artificial intelligence (AI) technology is used.

The firm's chief executive Dario Amodei said on Thursday that his company would rather not work with the Pentagon than agree to uses of its tech that may "undermine, rather than defend, democratic values."

His comments come two days after a meeting with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth over demands that Anthropic accept "any lawful use" of its tools. It ended with a threat to remove Anthropic from the DoD's supply chain.

Donald Trump said Friday he will direct all federal agencies to “IMMEDIATELY CEASE” all use of Anthropic technology.

The Department of Defense and Anthropic hit an impasse with neither side backing down as a deadline for an agreement lapsed on Friday afternoon. The Pentagon had demanded the artificial intelligence company loosen ethical guidelines on its AI systems or face severe consequences.

Trump weighed in just an hour before the deadline, saying on Truth Social: “The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution.”

Exclusive: Anthropic Drops Flagship Safety Pledge

Anthropic, the wildly successful AI company that has cast itself as the most safety-conscious of the top research labs, is dropping the central pledge of its flagship safety policy, company officials tell TIME.

In 2023, Anthropic committed to never train an AI system unless it could guarantee in advance that the company’s safety measures were adequate. For years, its leaders touted that promise—the central pillar of their Responsible Scaling Policy (RSP)—as evidence that they are a responsible company that would withstand market incentives to rush to develop a potentially dangerous technology.

But in recent months the company decided to radically overhaul the RSP. That decision included scrapping the promise to not release AI models if Anthropic can’t guarantee proper risk mitigations in advance.

Cowork can also use the data in that folder to create new projects — but it's still in early access, so be cautious.

Cowork is a Claude Code assistant that can work on larger projects, tapping into a specific folder on a computer.

Claude Cowork is a new feature that taps into a user's computer folder to either modify it or create new projects with the data, Anthropic said in a blog post on Monday. Cowork is currently only available to MacOS users with a $100/month Claude Max subscription.

Cowork works by having users give Claude access to a computer folder. Once in, users can then chat with Claude and have it organize all the files, rename items to match a specific naming convention or read the files inside to create spreadsheets or other documents. For example, if a user has a folder with a bunch of receipts, Cowork can organize all the files and create a spreadsheet listing all the expenses.
