Live: Appeal decision due shortly for triple murderer Erin Patterson

Victoria's highest court has dismissed Erin Patterson's appeal against her murder convictions and resentenced the killer to life in prison without parole.

Patterson was last year found guilty of murdering three relatives and trying to kill another by serving them beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms.

What today's decision means is that Erin Patterson will no longer be eligible for parole in 33 years. Instead, she will spend the rest of her life behind bars.

In terms of her future, she is left with very few legal avenues. Other than very niche cases where new evidence exonerates her, her only option would be to appeal against this decision in the High Court of Australia.

Elder loses bid to appeal ruling on genocide against King Charles

Judges have rejected Krautatungalung elder Robbie Thorpe's landmark bid to prosecute King Charles III over the alleged genocide of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The case alleged that the king is perpetuating genocide by maintaining systems that disadvantage Indigenous people across numerous socio-economic measures.

Mr Thorpe says he will take his allegations against the monarch to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.

An Indigenous elder attempting to charge King Charles III with genocide says Australia is in denial over its crimes and their ongoing impacts.

Uncle Robbie Thorpe has been pursuing legal action against the king since 2023 over the alleged genocide committed against Aboriginal people.

On Monday, an application to appeal a decision preventing the case from proceeding was denied.

Despite the loss, the Krauatungalung Elder and uncle of Senator Lidia Thorpe said the effort has been worth it.

"If it wasn't for the acts of terror and the policies of genocide, Australia wouldn't exist.

Mr Thorpe filed a charge sheet with the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria in 2023, naming himself as the informant and the King as the accused.

Rothbury Estate purchase appeal passes halfway with £5m grant

Conservation groups attempting to buy a huge stretch of land in the north east of England have secured £5m towards their goal.

The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust are attempting to raise £30m to buy the 3,800ha (15-sq-m) Rothbury Estate in Northumberland in a bid to boost biodiversity.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the latest organisation to donate to the appeal and its pledge takes the amount amassed so far to £16m, but to unlock the latest grant the appeal must raise the remainder of the funding by the end of September 2026.

The Wildlife Trusts' president Liz Bonnin said the grant was a "major step towards securing the beautiful and historic" estate.

Boost to Rothbury Estate campaign but still work to do

Celebrations are in order as the half way stage has been reached in the campaign to secure the 3,800-hectare Rothbury Estate in Northumberland for nature – but urgency remains.

A £5 million award from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) takes the total raised so far to £16 million, making the £30 million cost of purchase seem more achievable.

The award was welcomed as “a major boost” by The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust which are leading on what they hope will become one of the most ambitious nature recovery projects in the country.

Following the successful purchase of the estate in 2024, including the Simonside Hills, much loved by walkers, the fundraising has gone well, they say.

David Attenborough-backed appeal for 40-mile 'wild' corridor passes halfway mark

THE appeal to purchase a historic Northumberland estate backed by Sir David Attenborough has hit the halfway mark.

The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust launched a £30 million appeal to purchase the Rothbury Estate, a 15-square-mile tract of former grouse moor, woodland, farmland, streams, and rivers, with plans to boost wildlife, restore bogs, and champion nature-friendly farming.

The appeal has passed the halfway mark after a £5m donation from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, pushing the total raised so far to £16.5m.

The Trusts purchased part of the Rothbury Estate, which included the much-loved Simonside Hills, in October 2024.

The historic estate is the largest area of land to be put on sale in England in decades. It sits in the heart of what nature experts said could be a 40-mile 'wild' corridor of protected landscapes, nature reserves and wildlife-focused estates stretching from the coast to Kielder and the Scottish border.

There’s a ready-made audience for this comic reboot of the 1997 creature feature Anaconda.

The original has become a cult classic treasured among movies that are so bad they’re good, which means fans are watching the new one with an affectionate appreciation of its parodic nods to the original. If you’re among the unconverted, however, you may be less susceptible.

The adventure begins when Griff Griffin (Paul Rudd), an out-of-work actor, tells a few of his old friends that he’s managed to acquire the rights to Anaconda, a picture they’ve all loved since adolescence. Eager to produce a remake, he suggests he and his former girlfriend, Claire (Thandiwe Newton) play the leads, their camera-mad friend Doug (Jack Black) directs and Kenny (Steve Zahn), the fourth member of the group, fills the role of cinematographer.

After an absolutely woeful attempt at a horror-movie cold open where it becomes clear that director/co-writer Tom Gormican hasnâ€™t the merest glimmer of talent for establishing mood, building suspense or even properly unveiling a crazy creature, the movie settles in for the true mission of any great broad comedy: uh, building pathos? After years as an aspiring film-maker, Doug (Jack Black) is succeeding-yet-languishing in his compromised hometown job as a wedding videographer. Meanwhile, his childhood bestie, Griff (Paul Rudd), is following the dream by working as an actor out in Los Angeles, but only just barely. We see him fired from a one-line role on a medical show because of his nerves, in a scene written for nagging sympathy first and comedy a distant second.

Anaconda First Reviews: A Missed Opportunity Buoyed by a Likable Cast

The action-horror comedy Anaconda is set to hit theaters this Christmas, and the first reviews are now available online. Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in the movie, a meta sequel to the 1997 cult classic of the same name, alongside Steve Zahn and Thandiwe Newton. This sixth installment of the franchise follows a group of friends attempting to remake the original, and many reviews celebrate how it sends up creature features of the ‘90s and the reboot-driven Hollywood of today. However, it might be difficult to appreciate the 2025 Anaconda if you haven’t seen the 1997 Anaconda.
