Death numbers are climbing as Australia’s baby boomers reach their 80s

The annual number of deaths in Australia has risen to the highest level since the pandemic and is set to keep climbing as the baby boomers reach their 80s.

There were 188,421 deaths in Australia last year, 1153 more than in 2024, and just below the all-time high registered in 2022 when there was a temporary spike in deaths due to COVID-19.

Population ageing was driving the increase in the number of deaths, the Bureau of Statistics said. Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, became Australia’s leading cause of death in 2024, overtaking ischaemic heart diseases, separate bureau statistics show.

The median age at which people died last year was 82.1 years (the median age is when half are older and half are younger). That’s up from 81.9 years a decade earlier.

The Boomer exit will reshape Australia

Australia’s latest annual death numbers confirm the “silver tsunami” that’s been building on our horizon for years has finally arrived. Baby Boomers, who entered the world in an optimistic post-war birth rate explosion, are heading into their 80s and starting to exit the world. Their youngest members have reached the traditional retirement age of 65.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the nation recorded 188,421 deaths last year, the highest since the COVID-19 pandemic. As economics writer Matt Wade reports this figure is expected to keep rising and close in on the number of births, led by our population of ageing Boomers.

The age measure where Australian women outperform men three to one

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

The Bureau of Statistics revealed this week that there were 188,421 registered deaths in Australia in 2025, which was 0.6 per cent higher than the previous year.

An ageing population contributed, with the median age of death for males at 79.7 years and 84.6 for females.

But what surprised me the most about the statistics is the extent to which females are outliving males, and in far greater numbers.

Among Australians who lived to 100 or older, women far outnumbered men: 2,392 women died last year, compared with 724 men.

Banks are slashing credit card perks. Here's what you stand to lose

Experts say banks are clawing back lost revenue with significant changes to credit cards. (ABC Adelaide: Brett Williamson)

From October 1, those small surcharges we pay on debit, prepaid and credit cards will be scrapped under reforms by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), saving customers about $1.6 billion each year.

While this is good news for most of us, experts say some credit card holders may be worse off under the reforms.

Here's what you need to know about the changes and how they could affect you.

Because the RBA is also lowering the cap on interchange fees (what a store would pay to your bank when you tap your card), it means most banks are looking to recoup lost revenue.

Cash discounts and refunds: Your card surcharge ban cheat sheet

Consumers and businesses are wrapping their heads around the Reserve Bank’s ban on card payment surcharges today and figuring out how it works.

From October 1, you should no longer see an additional charge applied to card payments. If your coffee costs $5, that’s what you should expect to pay – at least, in theory.

In practice, you may well still see a surcharge on your purchases as merchants and retailers adjust their approach.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet on how the ban will work.

The Reserve Bank has changed the rules to now allow card networks – Mastercard, Visa and Eftpos – to ban surcharges for credit, debit and prepaid card payments made in store, online or via mobile wallets. PayPal, American Express, UnionPay are also removing surcharges from October 1.

New fees, higher costs: Card surcharges have been banned – how will it affect the way you pay?

Australians will no longer pay a surcharge on credit or debit card purchases from Thursday, but the changes at the register won’t stop there.

Some businesses are already making changes, with an after-school care provider cutting off card payments and a school canteen service setting $10 minimum checkouts to manage processing costs.

At the same time, major banks and card providers are trimming cardholder benefits to offset their own expenses.

Cotality data shows median house prices fell in September as interest rates hit borrowing capacity

Housing prices are falling in almost every suburb in Australia’s biggest cities, with values dropping faster in Brisbane than Sydney as the slowdown intensifies.

Prices nationally have fallen 5.2% from their peak in March to where they were a year ago, Cotality data released on Thursday shows.

Economists say prices are on track to fall at least 10% after the Reserve Bank lifted rates for the fourth time this year on Tuesday, pushing more buyers out of the market.

Australia faces 'biggest property downturn in 40 years', raising recession risk

Cotality's Home Value Index fell 1.1 per cent in September taking cumulative declines to 5.2 per cent below March's peak. (ABC News: Declan Bowring)

Experts warn the property market could experience peak-to-trough falls of up to 15 per cent nationally.

Australian house prices fell for a sixth straight month in September, and experts say the property market could experience falls of up to 15 per cent in the coming months off the back of higher interest rates and cuts to housing tax breaks.

Cotality's Home Value Index fell 1.1 per cent in September, taking cumulative declines to 5.2 per cent below March's peak.

Brisbane saw the sharpest monthly drop among capitals (-1.5 per cent), while Sydney fell 1.4 per cent and Melbourne fell 0.7 per cent.

‘Do you feel like a fraud?’: Albanese stares down brutal question in New York

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has responded coldly after a journalist confronted him over whether he was a “fraud” for receiving a global award despite serious domestic disrepute.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been asked whether he feels like a “fraud” for accepting a global citizen award while facing a dramatic collapse in support at home.

Mr Albanese has travelled to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and will also receive the Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Award on the sidelines.

But the looming honour collided with Mr Albanese’s increasingly fraught domestic political position.

“Prime Minister, here in New York on Wednesday night, you will receive an award for being a global citizen,” a journalist asked the PM on Monday (Australian time).

‘We are all devastated’: Old Xavs apologise after administrative failure costs grand final berth

The president of a powerhouse Victorian amateur football club forced to forfeit a grand final spot has taken full responsibility for selecting an ineligible player.

Old Xaverians’ under-19 premier men’s team won its preliminary final over St Kevin’s on Saturday, but won’t contest the grand final against Old Brighton after a league investigation.

The Victorian Amateur Football Association announced late on Sunday night that the Old Xavs would receive a $100 fine and forfeit their five-point victory over St Kevin’s for breaking finals eligibility rules.

St Kevin’s, not Old Xaverians, will compete in this weekend’s grand final. This masthead is not suggesting that Old Xavs intended to break VAFA rules.

St Kevin’s through to Grand Final after scintillating match – Holmesglen U19 Premier Men’s Preliminary Final Review

St Kevin’s will meet Old Brighton in the Holmesglen Under 19 Premier Men’s Grand Final after a post-match player ineligibility issue voided Old Xaverians’ heart-stopping Preliminary Final win.

The two sides produced a scintillating contest at Revo Fitness Park on Saturday, with Old Xaverians ultimately prevailing by five points, 8.13 (61) to 8.8 (56), before the result was overturned following the discovery of an ineligible player.

It was a tight and defensive opening term, with St Kevin’s holding a four-point advantage at the first change after both sides traded momentum throughout the quarter.

Both sides lifted their offence in the second term, each kicking two goals as SKOB took a slight three-point advantage into the main break.

There are three main reasons inflation is rising. Higher rates won't fix them

The RBA has already lifted the interest rate three times this year. (ABC News: Eric Hao Zheng)

Bloodletting is an ancient therapy, dating back at least three millennia, and traditionally used to "cure" a range of ills.

Whether through leeches or lancets, practitioners drew blood from the patient to rebalance their humours in hopes of a cure.

Perhaps most famously, the USA's first president, George Washington, had more than one-and-a-half litres of blood removed in an attempted cure for epiglottitis that likely caused, or at least hastened, his death in 1799.

Fortunately for us, the practice fell out of favour as medical science progressed in the 19th century, and is now restricted to a few specific diseases where it has been shown to help.

Macquarie says RBA’s hawkishness points to all but certain rate rise

Macquarie says its analysis of the language used by Reserve Bank of Australia officials showed increasing hawkishness after they met last month and decided not to increase interest rates, and bond markets are almost certain the central bank will raise the official cash rate in two weeks.

The broker’s comments come as the Federal Reserve is set to raise interest rates this week for the first time in three years to tackle a rise in inflation triggered by higher oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict.

RBA warning as 76pc market surge flags fifth rate hike

Aussies are being warned to brace for a brutal double rate hike as market pricing peaks for a fourth rise in days – and a hidden tax trap threatens to force the Reserve Bank into a horror fifth spike.

After cutting rates three times in 2025 – which it un-did with three hikes in early 2026 – the Reserve Bank now finds itself pressured by long-term interest rate pricing, with traders already looking well beyond the next move.

Institutional traders went from a 50/50 coin flip on August 31 to an overwhelming 76 per cent expectation of a September rate hike. (Source: ASX)

Chinese teens are turning to mind-numbing drugs to 'run away from reality'

At 14, *Xiaomei, a high-performing student from a coastal province in China, decided to overdose on cough medication.

She wanted to impress an older boy who told her it would help her relax. The tablets were usually only available with a doctor's prescription, but she managed to buy them online.

At first she found that they made her a bit dizzy. But she was soon hooked to the slightly numb sensation, which, to her, felt like a brief respite from the pressure of looming exams. When taken in large doses, the drug can cause serious side effects, including hallucinations and impaired coordination.

A Genetic Mutation Is Making It Easier for Drug-Resistant Malaria to Spread

The main drug that has been in use for decades to combat malaria in sub-Saharan Africa is running into a problem: In recent years, researchers have become increasingly concerned that parasites are becoming less sensitive to treatment. Identifying the underlying genetic factors has become an urgent priority.

In an attempt to identify the reason for drug-resistant malaria, a team led by Brown University researchers conducted whole-genome analysis of 157 malaria parasite samples selected from specimens collected in Uganda between 2016 and 2024. The work, published in Nature Medicine this week, shows evidence that mutations in a gene that encodes a protein called px1, which had previously received little attention, is likely responsible for the rise in drug resistance.

CoreWeave Just Announced Fantastic News for Nvidia Stock Investors

One of the hottest debates on Wall Street concerns the future of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure spending and its potential impact on industry leaders, such as Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). Some investors believe that the AI tailwind won't last much longer, and as it slows, Nvidia's shares will plunge. Others think the semiconductor specialist is still looking at a large growth runway. Who is right?

Earnings season has given us more evidence for the bull thesis. Consider, for instance, CoreWeave's (NASDAQ: CRWV) second-quarter results, released on Aug. 11. The AI-focused cloud computing company's update gave us more reasons to believe Nvidia's run is far from over. Here's what investors need to know.

Sponsorships Are Now Available to Affiliates

At Twitch, we’re focused on removing barriers between streamers and earning opportunities. That’s why starting today, Affiliates can get discovered, execute campaigns, and get paid by brands through sponsorships on Twitch. Affiliates will now be included in select campaigns where they meet the brand’s criteria, and with the integrated workflow in the Sponsorship Dashboard, they can execute campaigns end-to-end from a single place.

Until now, sponsorships were only available to Partners, outside of a few one-off campaigns, including the recent Minecraft campaigns “Tiny Takeover” and “More Minecraft, More Challenges”. Those campaigns validated clear brand demand for Affiliate partnerships, with over 50% of participating, paid streamers being Affiliates. Following the Minecraft campaigns, we heard from Affiliates loud and clear: you wanted more opportunities to work with brands directly on Twitch. So we built it. Now, all brands can invite all Affiliates globally to their first sponsorship on Twitch.

TWITCH OPENS SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES TO AFFILIATES WORLDWIDE!

Twitch Affiliates can now access brand sponsorships directly through the platform, opening up new opportunities for smaller streamers to work with major brands and earn from sponsored content.

Twitch is expanding its creator monetisation strategy by making sponsorship opportunities available to Affiliates globally, giving more streamers the chance to connect with brands, manage campaigns and get paid directly through Twitch.

Previously, Twitch sponsorships were primarily available to Partners, with only selected campaigns offering opportunities to Affiliates. The platform says recent campaigns, including its Minecraft “Tiny Takeover” and “More Minecraft, More Challenges” activations, demonstrated strong demand for Affiliate creators, with more than half of participating paid streamers in those campaigns being Affiliates.
