Australia’s major supermarkets are furious they are being targeted with more regulations, Australian Associated Press reports, with Coles crying poor about making about $2.50 for every $100 a customer spends.

The federal government has introduced rules to limit “excessive pricing of groceries” with changes to Australia’s Food and Grocery Code of Conduct, which was made mandatory in April.

Coles has hit back saying more regulations were not the answer to lowering grocery prices and would drive costs up for shoppers.

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland will repay part of a $22,000 trip with her family to Perth after the politicians’ expenses watchdog found it was outside official guidelines.

A spokesman for Rowland confirmed this morning that the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA) reviewed the trip that was taken in 2023 after the attorney-general sought advice on it.

The Australian Financial Review revealed last week that Rowland claimed almost $22,000 for flights and a travel allowance for a week-long trip to Perth during the NSW school holidays in mid-2023. That included $16,050 for three family flights.

Follow along to our live coverage of day two of the second Ashes test here.

Australia dodged a bullet for their painfully slow over rate on day one of the Gabba Test – avoiding potential ICC penalties only by dismissing England so early on day two.

But Steve Smith’s side was still slammed by some of cricket’s greats after, at one stage late on day one, Australia took 18 minutes to bowl just three overs as fields were changed, helmets taken on and off and conferences held with bowlers.

‘Don’t think it was acceptable’: Great calls out Smith after ‘ridiculous’ Gabba scenes

Australia’s sluggish over-rate came back to bite them on day one of the pink-ball Ashes Test at the Gabba as the hosts narrowly avoided a significant penalty on Friday morning.

Only 74 overs were bowled on the opening day of the second Test against England in Brisbane as Australia’s all-pace attack toiled with the pink Kookaburra, falling short of the required 90 overs. No spinners were used on Thursday, with Australia controversially sidelining veteran tweaker Nathan Lyon for the day-night contest.

It was the least number of overs bowled in a full day’s play in Test history on Australian soil.

Federal politics live: Australia drops push to host COP31, Chris Bowen to lead summit

Australia has ceded the COP31 climate summit to Türkiye but Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will be the president of the summit pending Ankara's approval.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended the government's action on immigration, saying Labor has reduced migration numbers.

The Coalition is forming a policy on immigration, which some reports suggest will include tougher screening.

Speaking to ABC Radio Perth, he says a spike in migration after the COVID pandemic was expected, but that numbers are now moderating.

Albanese says the Coalition's pivot to immigration shows they want to divert attention away from their energy policy.

Australia has formally dumped its bid to host next year’s United Nations COP31 climate summit in Adelaide and ceded the event to rival Turkey.

In return for the Turks hosting the summit in the resort region of Antalya, the Albanese government has proposed that Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen shares the presidency of the event with Turkey and that there be a pre-COP summit in the Pacific to act as pledging event towards a Pacific Resilience Fund, an Australian initiative.

Turkey to host Cop31 climate conference after Australia drops push to hold it in Adelaide

Turkey will host the Cop31 climate conference after the Australian government dropped its push to hold the event in Adelaide at the last moment – despite having invested in a more than three-year campaign.

Independent sources confirmed to the Guardian that the fortnight-long event would be held in Turkey’s Mediterranean resort city of Antalya in November 2026.

The details of a deal were being thrashed out between the countries’ climate ministers, Chris Bowen and Murat Kurum, at the Cop30 conference in the Brazilian city of Belém on Wednesday.

The story behind Australia's incredible democratic system

Behind the quirks of Australia's incredible democratic system are a series of complex human backstories. (ABC News)

As a nation, we sort of vaguely understand this, and take a generalised pride in the triennial democracy sausage, and the beige, competent omnipresence of the Australian Electoral Commission.

Annabel Crabb unearths the individuals and stories behind the features that combine to make Australian democracy globally unique.

But the itemised list of our peculiarities, and the tales that twine around the getting of them at various points along the life-span of our young Federation — just 125 years old next year! — is worth reviewing, if you have a moment.

Civic Duty: Annabel Crabb is on a one-woman mission to make Australian politics interesting

Australian politics: it’s enough to make your eyes glaze over — especially if you’re a 10-year-old kid being forced to sit through a HASS lesson on how our unique parliamentary system works.

But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if there was a way to make people “marvel at the miracle that is the Australian electoral process” instead of rolling their eyes and running for the nearest exit?

Annabel Crabb is on a mission to prove that there is — she’s taking Aussie audiences along for the ride via her new series Civic Duty for ABC, and engaging the younger generation through her recently-released children’s book, There’s A Prawn In Parliament House: The Kids’ Guide To Australia’s Amazing Democracy.

Ever since she started knocking on politicians’ doors in 2012 for Kitchen Cabinet, Annabel Crabb has been determined to put a human face on our elected representatives. She has always made them reveal more than what they could, or could not, cook: Christopher Pyne was funny, former treasurer Joe Hockey lived like a sharehouse student, while former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce blithely served up beef stew to the non-meat-eating Crabb.
