Massive Attack continued their Australian headline tour in Sydney last night and Rolling Stone AU/NZ was there

It’s funny to consider that once upon a time, back when their classic 1991 debut album Blue Lines was released, Massive Attack was actually considered “chill-out music”.

The 2026 Massive Attack live experience is about as far removed from “chill” as you can get.

A collective formed in Bristol, England in 1988 that now consists of two constant members Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, the group don’t want you to simply engage with the music, but also a pulverising visual experience that throws everything from hypnotic rows of LED digits to vapid social influencers to horrific war statistics at you in rapid succession. It’s a lot.

Despite it being 16 years since their last album, Massive Attack's reputation as one of electronic music's most respected and influential names is untarnished.

The deeply innovative, evocative British trailblazers emerged in 1988 out of Bristol collective The Wild Bunch and helped pioneer an atmospheric, cross-bred sound that would be dubbed "trip hop".

Though they never embraced the label, Massive Attack's cinematic splicing of brooding ambience, hypnotic dub grooves, subtler, soulful vocals and hip hop's omnivorous sampling was a refreshing alternative to popular 90s trends like Britpop, big beat and UK hip hop.

Two Greek firefighting helicopters, leased by Australian company McDermott Aviation, have collided in midair while battling a wind-driven wildfire west of Athens, with footage showing one aircraft crashing to the ground.

Fire department says two-person crew of one aircraft killed in incident during gale-force winds to west of capital

Two firefighting helicopters have collided west of Athens, killing the two-person crew of one of the aircraft, as efforts to control a massive wildfire barrelling towards the outskirts of the Greek capital intensified.

Footage showed one of the helicopters losing control in the face of gale-force winds that have pushed flames towards settlements on Athens’ western fringes.

“The pilots … were taken unconscious to hospital, where their death was confirmed,” said the fire department’s director of communications, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis.

The Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the two dead were a Dane and a Greek. The two crew members of the second helicopter were rescued.

He was known for his vast music knowledge and collection, and edited Billboard magazine for over 20 years.

Baker has been remembered by his family as "somebody who absolutely grabbed life".

Australian music journalist, historian and broadcaster Glenn A Baker has died aged 74.

Known for his vast music knowledge, Baker won the BBC's Rock Brain of the Universe three times in the mid-1980s.

In the mid-1970s, Baker was part of a research project which resulted in the formation of 2JJ, which later became triple j.

Glenn A. Baker, an Australian rock music journalist, collector, commentator, author and broadcaster, has died. He was 74.

A long-time contributor to the Herald, Baker had recently been battling an illness, according to a close family friend.

In 2024, the fierce collector of records, CDs, books, magazines, newspaper clippings and other rock music ephemera put his record collection, estimated at over 80,000 items, up for auction.

An eminent music journalist and commentator for over 200 magazines and the author of at least 16 books, Baker was known for always donning variously coloured fezes – Ottoman-era Turkish headwear.

“I first wore it for fun for the cover of one of my travel books, sitting upon the engine of a 747 – they had to get a ladder to get me up there – and then when I went out to do interviews about it, people would say, ‘Oh, where’s the hat? You look great in the hat!’” Baker told Peter FitzSimons in 2024.

Beloved Australian music journalist and broadcaster Glenn A. Baker dies aged 74

A juggernaut of Australian music known for his vast knowledge of the industry, Glenn A. Baker, has died at the age of 74.

Baker’s friend and fellow music journalist, Stuart Coupe, announced he died on Friday morning.

“This is a post that I was hoping I wouldn’t be making for a considerable period of time,” Coupe said in a post to social media.

“But after an illness Glenn A. Baker passed away earlier this morning. I’m beyond sad.”

Baker is best known for his passion for Australian music, especially rock ‘n’ roll, during its explosion onto the international scene in the 1970s.

The commonwealth and the WA government will fund a $4m early-stage feasibility study into construction of what would be the country’s third large-scale petrol refinery.

A series of refinery closures over the past 25 years means Australia now imports about 90% of its liquid fuels, a vulnerability exposed by the international oil crisis sparked by the US-Israel war on Iran.

A new oil refinery being considered for the country would still require imported oil to run, only partially shielding Australia from ongoing global shocks.

A $4 million pre-feasibility study into a new large-scale oil refinery at Karratha in the Pilbara will be announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and West Australian Premier Roger Cook on Tuesday.

It would be built by Western Australian industrial company Perdaman and is slated to create thousands of jobs in a boost to the local economy.

PM launches plan for new oil refinery as fuel crisis bites

Australia’s Commonwealth Games team is under strict instructions to make no mention of billionaire Gina Rinehart or other private benefactors in media interviews or on social media until after the 2026 Glasgow Games are closed.

The warning comes after Rinehart offered up cash bonuses to Australia’s swimmers for winning medals and breaking world records at the Commonwealth Games.

Individual swimmers will pocket $30,000 for a world record, $20,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. Relay team members will be rewarded with $7,500 per person for a world record, $5,000 for a gold medal, $3,750 for silver and $2,500 for bronze.

A Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) spokesperson said Australia’s best swimmers had a history of always showing up to the Games.

Rinehart and Hancock Prospecting are not official partners of Australia’s Commonwealth Games team. Sponsors pay significant money for that position and naturally expect their commercial rights to be protected.

Athletes shouldn’t be using official interviews to promote another company, display its logo or deliver some rehearsed advertising message.

Australian government arguing 'very forcefully' against Trump's new 12.5pc tariffs

Five months after a court struck down many of Donald Trump's tariffs, the US has announced a suite of new imposts for all of its major trading partners.

Australia has been hit with a 12.5 per cent tariff, while some countries have a 10 per cent tariff.

The new tariffs came into force at 2:01pm AEST on Friday. A temporary 10 per cent tariff lapsed at the same time, so Australia's tariff rate increased 2.5 percentage points.

The Trump administration has placed a 12.5 per cent tariff on Australian exports to the US.

US imposes tariffs on dozens of trade partners over 'forced labour' imports

The US has imposed new tariffs on 60 trading partners, accounting for the vast majority of its imports, over claims they failed to properly stop forced labour.

The duties, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, target key economic partners – including the UK, China, the European Union, Canada, Japan and India. They came into effect on Friday, as a temporary 10% tax on foreign goods introduced earlier this year expired.

The move is the latest escalation in the global trade war reignited by US President Donald Trump when he returned to office last year.

The US Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that many of the tariffs imposed globally under emergency powers were illegally enacted.

The stoner rock icons announce their Australian return alongside new single, 'Easy Street'.

The legendary Queens Of The Stone Age will be making a triumphant return to Australia later this year, announcing a run of national tour dates for December.

Kicking off in Adelaide on December 8th, the local trek will see them hit up Hobart's MyState Bank Arena, Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena, Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, before heading east for a long New Zealand date at Auckland's Spark Arena.

Joining the band on all dates will be influential alternative rockers Primus, who make their return to Australia after eight years away, and Tropical Fuck Storm, whose near-decade of existence have seen them considered one of the country's most exciting and ferocious rock exports.

Australian police reveal unseen photos 25 years after British backpacker murder

Police in Australia have released previously unseen photographs from their investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio 25 years ago.

Falconio, from Huddersfield, was shot on a remote stretch of highway near the Northern Territory town of Barrow Creek, about 186 miles (300km) north of Alice Springs on 14 July 2001.

His body has never been found and police hope the images could jog memories that could lead to a tip-off. His killer, Bradley Murdoch, died of throat cancer aged 67 in jail last year, without disclosing where Falconio's remains might be.

The images include a full length picture of Murdoch staring straight at a camera during the police investigation.
