    Australian murderer loses bid to eat Vegemite in prison

    A convicted murderer serving a life sentence in Australia has lost his bid to overturn a ban on prisoners consuming Vegemite – the salty yeast-based spread that has become a national symbol.

    Andre McKechnie argued that the ban, in place since 2006, denied him the right to "enjoy his culture as an Australian".

    Authorities in the state of Victoria say inmates may use the strong-smelling paste to disguise contraband substances or to brew alcohol behind bars.

    And on Monday, a Supreme Court judge rejected McKechnie's appeal, saying the prisoner's "cultural rights are limited primarily by the fact he has been sentenced to a term of imprisonment".

    A murderer who claimed a refusal to allow him Vegemite in prison is a breach of his human rights as an Australian has failed to overturn the ban on the polarising spread.

    Andre McKechnie sued Victoria’s corrections department after he was refused the salty, yeast-based condiment in prison.

    McKechnie claimed the refusal denied him his human right to “enjoy his culture” as an Australian.

    “Without being able to consume Vegemite, I feel deprived of being able to practise my Australian culture, sad and disconnected from my family and community,” he told the state’s supreme court.

    Judges have rejected Krautatungalung elder Robbie Thorpe's landmark bid to prosecute King Charles III over the alleged genocide of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

    The case alleged that the king is perpetuating genocide by maintaining systems that disadvantage Indigenous people across numerous socio-economic measures.

    Mr Thorpe says he will take his allegations against the monarch to the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.

    An Aboriginal elder pursuing a case of genocide against King Charles III has hit a legal hurdle.

    Australia 'in denial' after king's criminal case fails

    An Indigenous elder attempting to charge King Charles III with genocide says Australia is in denial over its crimes and their ongoing impacts.

    Uncle Robbie Thorpe has been pursuing legal action against the king since 2023 over the alleged genocide committed against Aboriginal people.

    On Monday, an application to appeal a decision preventing the case from proceeding was denied.

    Despite the loss, the Krauatungalung Elder and uncle of Senator Lidia Thorpe said the effort has been worth it.

    "If it wasn't for the acts of terror and the policies of genocide, Australia wouldn't exist.

    Mr Thorpe filed a charge sheet with the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria in 2023, naming himself as the informant and the King as the accused.

    A United States federal judge has rejected Elon Musk’s bid to void a jury verdict finding that Musk, the world’s richest person, defrauded Twitter investors by trying to drive down the social media company’s stock price after agreeing to a $44bn takeover.

    US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco, California on Monday also denied Musk’s motion to decertify the class of investors, and granted the investors’ motion for prejudgment interest. The judge did, however, find Musk not liable for one of his challenged tweets.

    Elon Musk’s aggressive attempt to wipe away a massive legal defeat has been flatly rejected by a federal judge, leaving the tech billionaire facing a potential $2.5 billion penalty.

    On Monday, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco officially shot down Musk’s bid to void a March jury verdict. That verdict found the world's richest man liable for defrauding Twitter investors by intentionally trying to manipulate and tank the social media company's stock price during his chaotic $44 billion takeover in 2022, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

    In a stinging written order, Judge Breyer did not hold back against the billionaire's defense strategy.

    Launceston playground locomotive Hutch saved by Don River Railway

    A beloved Launceston playground locomotive has been given a second chance at life after being rescued by volunteer railway enthusiasts.

    The diesel shunter known as Hutch was removed from City Park over the Easter weekend as part of Launceston City Council’s rejuvenation plans for the area.

    Don River Railway stepped in to save the 35-year-old locomotive, which had been deteriorating despite protective measures.

    The Devonport-based heritage railway group successfully transported Hutch and an accompanying wagon to their workshop for restoration.

    “We … heard that the locomotive that was there was going to be removed. So we reached out in late 2025,” Sam Cook, president of Don River Railway, told Pulse.

    While the judge dismissed parts of the case, he said a jury might find that "artists were coerced into going with Live Nation."

    A federal judge on Wednesday (Feb. 18) refused to dismiss the Justice Department’s sweeping monopoly lawsuit against Live Nation, sending the case to trial next month.

    Live Nation had asked Judge Arun Subramanian to end the antitrust lawsuit, which aims to break up the company from its Ticketmaster subsidiary, arguing the feds had uncovered little hard evidence after more than a year of discovery.

    But in his ruling, the judge said the government could proceed to trial on several key accusations, including that Live Nation abused its vast portfolio of amphitheaters to force artists to use its promotion services.
