All Blacks v Italy: Nations Championship build-up from Hnry Stadium

All the action as the All Blacks host Italy in the Nations Championship, from Wellington’s Hnry Stadium.

The All Blacks will be looking to continue their positive start under new coach Dave Rennie when they meet Italy for the first time in Wellington.

This is also the first time the team are back playing in Wellington since their humiliating 43-17 loss to the Springboks in September 2025, with their recent record at HNRY Stadium being mixed beyond this.

In their last six fixtures in the capital, including the South Africa result, the All Blacks have three losses, two wins and one draw, but their strong record against Italy should give them plenty of confidence heading into this game.

New Zealand v Italy: Anton Segner to be first German-born All Black

Segner grew up in Frankfurt, but could realise his dream of becoming an All Black in Saturday's match against Italy

Anton Segner will become the first German-born All Black if the uncapped back row comes off the bench in New Zealand's Nations Championship match against Italy on Saturday.

The 24-year-old was born in Frankfurt and developed an obsession with rugby and the All Blacks after being introduced to the sport by two English school friends.

He joined a local club that had New Zealanders as coaches and adopted Kiwi habits, asking his parents to make him pies and performing a haka, learned from YouTube, at a school Christmas concert.

In 67 Tests between the two countries, New Zealand leads 51-15, with one drawn. The sides last met in a three-Test series in New Zealand, with the All Blacks completing a clean sweep, 31-27 in Dunedin, 43-17 in Wellington and 29-19 in Hamilton.

Heading into the Nations Championship, New Zealand is ranked second in the world, behind South Africa, on 90.33 points, while France is fourth on 87.46 points.

New All Blacks coach Dave Rennie said the side selected for the first Test was forced by the quality of Super Rugby Pacific performances. He said: “We have selected an exciting blend of experience and youth.

Gregor Paul: What surprise Jacobson selection reveals about Rennie’s thinking

Reminder, this is a Premium article and requires a subscription to read.

There is, perhaps, an in-house irony that by being picked at openside for the first test of 2026 Luke Jacobson blindsided the nation.

Of all the loose forward combinations available to Rennie for the
opening game against France, no one imagined he would pick the one he did.

The Super Rugby Pacific form trio in the eyes of the media had been Peter Lakai, Anton Segner and Wallace Sititi. Those three were seen to be competing for two places, as one of the three slots was reserved for captain Ardie Savea.

Sir John Kirwan 'would have picked' Beauden Barrett but is 'happy' Dave Rennie selected on form

Ruben Love and Beauden Barrett in action for the All Blacks.

Hurricanes star Ruben Love has long been seen as a future All Blacks fly-half, according to the legendary New Zealand back Sir John Kirwan.

The 25-year-old will make his first Test start in the position on Saturday when Dave Rennie’s side take on France in the Nations Championship.

Love will feature alongside ‘Canes team-mates Cam Roigard and Jordie Barrett, who take the scrum-half and inside centre roles respectively.

“Ruben has deserved it on form and Dave Rennie said he was going to pick on form. I think he’s done the majority of that and I understand why he hasn’t done it in some of the positions,” Kirwan said on the Rivals podcast.

Grant Batty: Former All Blacks wing dies, aged 74 in Queensland

Former All Blacks, Wellington and Bay of Plenty wing Grant Batty has died, aged 74.

Batty died on Friday in Queensland, Australia, where he had been living for several years.

Hailing from Greytown, Batty played 56 matches and 15 tests for the All Blacks during his career between 1972 and

He was often one of the smallest men on the field, standing 1.65m tall and weighing 70kg.

New Zealand Rugby’s acting chief executive Steve Lancaster said Batty was a “highly skilled player of his era”.

“He could energise a crowd, many of whom loved his bravery in not shirking away from larger opponents, and often coming away on top,” Lancaster said.
