    Burnham says he is 'finalising' cabinet ahead of becoming PM on Monday

    Andy Burnham said he had still not decided who will be in his cabinet ahead of him taking over from Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister on Monday.

    Asked why he had not announced his top team, the new Labour leader said: "It would be somewhat premature and would, I think, cause complete chaos if you start half a reshuffle before you're in the position."

    There has been widespread speculation about Burnham's cabinet picks, with Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood thought to be in the running to replace Rachel Reeves as chancellor.

    In an earlier speech after becoming party leader, the former mayor of Greater Manchester outlined his vision for government including reforms to the social care system.

    Nearing the end of his speech accepting the Labour leadership, Andy Burnham paused. “I know what to do,” he said. “I have a plan.” Perhaps he does. But even after half an hour of dense rhetoric, it is still not especially clear what this is.

    Burnham, who will become prime minister on Monday after this formal party coronation, is a politician who runs largely on vibes, and that was the driving force of his address to the Labour faithful in central London.

    It was a necessarily artificial occasion. Shabana Mahmood, who as national executive chair announced the result, barely contained her laughter as she set out how Burnham had taken 379 nominations from Labour MPs against one for Catherine West, and cast that as essentially a party in-joke.

    Andy Burnham clears final hurdle before becoming UK PM, but Aussie expat gets one vote

    Andy Burnham promised to bring hope to the British people and purpose to the country’s floundering Labour government as he was officially declared party leader on Friday, clearing his final hurdle to take office as prime minister next week.

    The former mayor of Greater Manchester was the only contender in the centre-left party’s leadership contest to replace departing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was forced out by a Labour rebellion. Friday’s announcement was a foregone conclusion after Burnham secured nominations from 379 of the 403 Labour lawmakers in the House of Commons.

    “We’re going to give them hope back,” Burnham told an audience of lawmakers, party activists and trade union leaders in his first speech as leader. “This is a proud moment you have given me and my family today, and an emotional one, but it is one for which I am ready.”
