BYD almost topples Toyota as EV sales soar again

Electric vehicles sales in Australia surged to a record last month and accounted for more than one in five new cars sold, while Chinese maker BYD almost toppled Toyota as the country’s most popular brand.

Australians purchased 32,570 EVs in June, equivalent to 23.3 per cent of the total 140,058 sales – itself a record – and up from 8.4 per cent of the total market in January this year, data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council showed.

Electric car sales surge even as fuel prices ease

Electric car sales continue to surge in Australia even as the energy crisis fades, and tax breaks on fuel begin to phase out, with both BYD and Tesla selling record numbers of vehicles last month.

BYD recorded an astonishing 18,881 vehicles in June, up from 8211 in May. Its rival Tesla sold 8670 vehicles in June, surpassing its previous record of 6433 set in May. In June last year Tesla sold 4589 cars in Australia.

The last time a car company in Australia, aside from market-leader Toyota, sold more than 17,000 vehicles in a single month, it was Holden in 2004.

The original 32¢ fuel excise cut, introduce by the federal government to help ease cost pressure, expired at the end of June. It has been extended at a halved rate of 16¢ a litre from July 1 to August 2. After August 2 it will return to its full rate.

China’s BYD aims to be world’s biggest car firm within five years

EV maker aims to overtake Toyota, as it plans to spend £1.8bn to build five-minute flash chargers in Europe

The Chinese car company BYD has said it aims to be the world’s biggest automaker within the next five years.

Targeting Toyota’s long-held top spot, BYD’s founder and chair, Wang Chuanfu said he was confident it could overtake global rivals through rapid advances in battery technology and fast charging, as well as growing production overseas, including Europe.

“BYD will truly become the number one automaker globally in terms of scale in five years,” he said at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in Shenzhen.

BYD outsold Ford, and now it thinks it can catch Toyota as the world’s No. 1 automaker

BYD is already the world’s largest EV maker, but the company’s CEO is confident it will become the world’s leading global automaker within the next five years.

After it stopped making cars powered solely by internal combustion engines (ICE) in 2022 to focus on battery electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles, BYD’s big bet has paid off so far.

With over 4.6 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold last year, which includes EVs and PHEVs, BYD surpassed Ford for the first time, ranking as the sixth largest global automaker.

According to BYD’s CEO, Wang Chuanfu, the Chinese EV giant is just getting started with new battery and charging tech set to drive growth over the next few years.

BYD launches 2026 Sealion 05 series equipped with flash charging

BYD officially launched its updated Sealion 05 series, as the Chinese automaker aims to consolidate its market share through lower prices and upgraded technology.

The revamped Sealion 05 SUV (sport utility vehicle) lineup includes the plug-in hybrid Sealion 05 DM-i and the battery-electric Sealion 05 EV, continuing the approach of their predecessors.

BYD: Crown Lost; A 'Toyota' Abroad Next?

$BYD COMPANY(01211.HK) released its Q4 2025 results after the Hong Kong close on Mar. 27 (Beijing time). Key takeaways are below.

    1. Revenue beat was driven by BYD Electronics; auto revenue in line: Q4 revenue was RMB 237.7bn, slightly above the RMB 236.7bn consensus, largely on strong QoQ growth in non-core businesses. In the core auto segment, revenue was RMB 181.5bn, broadly in line, but ASPs kept slipping.

In the core auto sales line, Q4 revenue reached RMB 181.5bn, matching market expectations. However, vehicle ASPs continued to trend down.

    2. ASP still on a downtrend: In Q4, auto ASP fell by RMB 1,500 QoQ to RMB 135,000, as clearance discounts offset the mix-upside from premiumization and exports. Inventory-clearing pressure restrained the structural ASP benefits.

How Nissan is looking to beat BYD at its own game in the ute space

Nissan sees the future of the Australian market as being dominated by hybrids, which includes four-wheel drive utes.

Nissan’s local boss is ‘passionate’ about the prospects of the Frontier Pro PHEV ute for the Australian market, as the brand plans for a market dominated by hybrid powertrains.

And it could take on the BYD Shark 6 in the Australian market, along with the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and Ford Ranger PHEV.

Andrew Humberstone, Nissan’s managing director for the Oceania region, wouldn’t yet lock in the Frontier Pro for the Australian market – and decline to confirm if the vehicle's arrival has already been shared with dealers – but told Drive that news is due soon.

2027 Nissan Frontier Pro could arrive this year

We’re just months away from an official announcement on the local future of the 2027 Nissan Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid ute, with departing Nissan Oceania managing director Andrew Humberstone revealing it could be here sooner than expected.

Speaking to carsales today at the national media launch of the all-new D27 Navara, Humberstone said many of the major boxes had been ticked on the Frontier Pro’s local business case and that the details were being wrapped up now.

“We’re hoping to have it sooner than originally planned, but it’s all being finalised as we speak and hopefully, within the next two months, you should get a statement from the new incumbent.”

Nissan’s answer to the BYD Shark 6 will be confirmed for Australia next month

The plug-in hybrid Nissan Frontier Pro dual-cab ute will be officially locked in for the local market in two weeks.

Nissan Australia revealed the news to its dealers last November, but Nissan Oceania managing director Andrew Humberstone has now confirmed the all-new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute will be officially announced for the Australian and New Zealand markets next month.

Speaking to media at this week’s launch of the new Mitsubishi Triton-based Navara ute, Mr Humberstone said Nissan Australia will announce a new ute “in two weeks”.

When asked whether he was referring to a hybrid ute, Mr Humberstone said: “Yeah, it will be”.

BYD has revealed its new "Blade" battery capable of charging its electric vehicles in rapid time, according to reports.

It is the second generation of the signature Blade battery, which is found on all of BYD’s electrified vehicles.

Targeted charge times range from 10-70 per cent in five minutes, with a charge from 10-97 per cent taking just nine minutes.

BYD Launches Ultra Fast Charging Blade Battery 2.0 and 1.5MW Flash Charging Station

BYD has officially unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery and a new flash charging system at a BYD tech event held on 5 March 2026. The next generation battery technology will now charge the next generation of BYD EVs as quickly as a quick stop at a petrol station

The new Blade Battery builds on BYD's existing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. It delivers 5% higher energy density than the first generation, a longer lifespan and stricter safety standards.

The Denza Z9GT, fitted with the new battery, achieves a claimed range of 1,036 km (CLTC) on a single charge.

Charging speed is the headline feature. The second-generation Blade Battery charges from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes. On standard charging piles, it charges 30-50% faster than conventional EV batteries.

BYD Sealion 08 and Seal 08 revealed as new flagship EVs for 2026

BYD has confirmed plans for two new flagship electric vehicles – the Sealion 08 large SUV and the Seal 08 sedan – both due to launch in China in early 2026. They showcase new technology and a more upmarket direction for the rapidly expanding brand and at least one of them is all but certain for Australia.

China’s most recognisable car brand, BYD, has teased two new models recently, confirming them for production imminently.

First up: the Sealion 08 large SUV has been teased by BYD. Not the Sealion 8 hitting Oz mid-2026 (confused yet?) but a bigger, meaner beast aimed squarely at luxury Chinese rivals like Zeekr.

BYD teases Seal 08 sedan and Sealion 08 SUV as its most luxurious Ocean Series models yet

Ahead of an official reveal in early 2026, BYD has locked in two new range-topping models for its ‘Ocean Series’ of models.

BYD has offered shadowy teasers for production versions of what will become the Seal 08 sedan and Sealion 08 SUV.

Poised to become the flagship models of their respective ranges, the ‘08’ versions of the Seal sedan line-up and Sealion SUV range, will enter the Chinese market as the most upmarket versions of BYD’s mainstream Ocean Series.

The Seal 08 has been previewed already in concept form, as the Ocean S, featuring a long-wheelbase sedan design with minimalist head- and tail-light designs, subtly blistered front and rear guards, and massive alloy wheels.

DENZA Reveals Australian Pricing for B5 and B8 Super Hybrid SUVs

DENZA has formally revealed Australian pricing for its first models, the DENZA B5 and DENZA B8 Super Hybrid SUVs, marking the brand’s official entry into the local market with a clear focus on premium positioning, advanced technology and long-range electrified driving.

The pricing announcement was made at the opening of DENZA’s first Australian location at Rushcutters Bay in Sydney, ahead of a national roadshow introducing the brand to dealerships and customers across the country.

For fleet and novated lease buyers, the pricing places DENZA squarely in the premium large SUV segment, while undercutting many established luxury competitors when specification and electrified capability are considered.
