A cash comeback? Shops navigate looming death of card surcharges

Bakery owner Dylan McQueen says he paid $5,785 in card fees last financial year. (ABC South East SA: Aiden McNamara)

Some shops are encouraging cash payments ahead of a nationwide ban on card surcharges.

The ban comes with new limits on the fees banks can charge businesses, but shops can no longer pass on these card costs directly.

Many businesses say they will raise prices after the RBA's changes on October 1.

Last financial year, bakery owner Dylan McQueen paid $5,785 in card fees, which he says came after years of displaying signs that read: "CASH PREFERRED."

While his laminated A4s led to an uptick in customers hunting for coins and notes to pay for their coffee and scrolls, cash was only 16 per cent of his transactions.

Card surcharges are banned from October 1. What’s changing at the checkout?

From October 1 this year, businesses will be banned from adding a surcharge when customers pay with a debit, credit, EFTPOS or prepaid card.

The Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association has said it “will be one of the largest changes in payments” in Australia’s history – and many small businesses “are unprepared for its arrival”.

The change follows a lengthy Reserve Bank of Australia review and decision to remove surcharging from all designated card networks (EFTPOS, Mastercard and Visa). American Express is voluntarily joining the change.

When the Reserve Bank first effectively allowed card surcharges in 2003, Australians mostly paid in cash. Cash still accounted for 69% of payments in 2007, when the central bank first began tracking payment methods usage. Back then, debit and credit cards were used for only one in four payments.

Ditch the credit card? Why it’s time to switch to debit

Thanks to the government’s brilliant decision on credit card surcharges and the Reserve Bank acting on it, I’m now going to be charged an extra $75 a year on top of my existing $175 card fee. I’m with BankSA, a subsidiary of Westpac. The bank says the only way to avoid such high fees is to abandon the joint credit card I have with my husband and each get a new card costing $7 a month. That’s $84 a year each, and we would have to apply separately and meet the bank’s lending criteria.

I have never failed to pay the balance in full. We are age pensioners so we may not even qualify. We use debit cards for everyday purchases and the credit card for scheduled bills, travel and emergencies. To cap it off, the supervisor asked whether I really needed a credit card. Is this really how banks now regard older customers who have spent a lifetime paying their bills on time?

Google burning through cash with spiralling AI costs

Shares of Google and Tesla plunged on Thursday as investors were spooked by the ever-increasing amounts of money being spent on artificial intelligence (AI).

Google's parent company Alphabet saw its share price drop by nearly 7%, while Elon Musk's electric vehicle-maker Tesla saw its stock fall 14.5%.

Both reported negative free cash flow – the money retained after paying for operations and investments – in financial results on Wednesday, alongside promises to spend billions more in the months and years to come.

It was the first time Google had seen the cash metric turn negative since it became a public company in 2004, according to its financial records.

Stock Market Today, July 23: Alphabet Slides 7% After Announcing 2026 Capex of Roughly $200 Billion

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), a search, ads, video, cloud, and AI infrastructure platforms provider, closed at $317.69, down 7.13%. Investors are reacting to higher AI-related spending and watching whether cloud growth can support returns on that build-out. Trading volume reached 68.6M shares, coming in about 111% above its three-month average of 32.5M shares. Alphabet IPO'd in 2004 and has grown 12,557% since going public.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) fell 1.20% to 7,409, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) dropped 2.15% to 25,138. Among internet content and information, digital advertising, and cloud services rivals, Microsoft closed at $381.58, down 2.24%, and Meta Platforms finished at $606.10, down 3.36%.

Budget shows WA still rolling in cash with another bumper surplus

The WA government has delivered a big-spending budget, focused on housing, health, economic infrastructure and cost of living relief.

Every West Australian with a driver's licence will get a $100 handout to help with skyrocketing fuel costs, but the electricity subsidy will not be revived.

Premier Roger Cook warned of economic headwinds ahead amid continuing global uncertainty.

Western Australia is once again rolling in cash with today's big-spending state budget revealing another bumper surplus, with a focus on funding health, housing and infrastructure projects.

But amid surging cost-of-living pressure, the budget offers some relief — including a $100 fuel payment for everyone with a valid driver's licence — as well as some cuts.

Saffioti takes aim at rate hike as housing takes centre stage in WA budget

West Australian Treasurer Rita Saffioti claims the government’s big spend on housing will not further inflate prices, with the housing crisis being firmly in the budget’s sights this year.

A total of $4.7 billion has been poured into housing, including $694 million for DevelopmentWA to create thousands of new lots across the state through the development of residential land.

However, when questioned whether a $297 million housing tax package including an increase in stamp duty concession and exemption thresholds would lead to house price inflation, Saffioti said the primary goal was increasing supply.

“It is really a range of new initiatives, so it is an additional investment in shared equity, we have additional investment in lifting the threshold for land,” she said.

Cash boost for millions of Aussies in weeks

More than five million Australians will benefit from a boost to their social security payments.

Aged pensioners, disability support pensioners and carers will receive about $22.20 extra in their fortnightly payments from March 20.

Parenting, ABSTUDY recipients aged 22 years and over and rent assistance payment recipients will also see an increase to their payments.

The boost to payments will make annual pensions $5545 better off since 2022.

The tentative indexation rates are based on data and will be officially confirmed in the coming weeks.

Deeming rate changes also come into effect next month, which allows the government to assess how much income can be earned based on a person’s financial assets.

Deeming rates set to rise, here's what it means for your pocket

Some pensioners and income support recipients could see small reductions in their payments after the federal government announced an increase deeming rates for the second time since the pandemic.

Deeming is a system used to estimate how much income people earn from financial assets such as savings, shares and managed funds.

Rather than assessing actual returns, Centrelink applies standard "deeming rates" to calculate income for pension and payment eligibility.

The Australian Government Actuary (AGA) recommended lifting deeming rates, which the federal government accepted, with an announcement on February 20 that changes would take effect from March 20, 2026. This is the same day pensions will also be indexed.
