‘Pull the trigger’: Last chance for Blues stars as shake-up looms

Andrew Johns has conceded the State of Origin decider could act as the last chance for a number of high-profile NSW Blues stars.

With the series on the line at Suncorp Stadium, the future of coach Laurie Daley has been a major talking point, especially after a horror game two defeat.

However, the playing group for the Blues is under immense pressure as well and when asked if the clash in Brisbane could be do-or-die for some members of the team, Johns gave a resounding answer and suggested some replacements.

“Number one will probably be fullback – Teddy [James Tedesco] is 33 and his replacement if he wasn’t there is Dylan Edwards, who is in his thirties as well and we all know that players like Kaeo Weekes are the next generation.

Leading edge: How eight club captains can help Blues win decider

Brisbane: Isaah Yeo will lead NSW onto Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night buoyed by the fact he’ll be followed by a further seven NRL club captains.

That wealth of leadership experience means it is unlikely the Blues will lose their composure in the series decider against Queensland.

Yeo and fellow Penrith co-captain Nathan Cleary will be joined by fellow captains Cameron Murray (South Sydney), James Tedesco (Sydney Roosters), Stephen Crichton (Canterbury), Mitchell Moses (Parramatta), Blayke Brailey (Cronulla) and Mitch Barnett (New Zealand Warriors).

Payne Haas has also captained Brisbane, Addin Fonua-Blake was elevated to Sharks skipper during Magic Round and Hudson Young has stepped into the role at the Raiders whenever Joe Tapine has been off the field.

NINE players who could debut for the NSW Blues in 2027

The NSW Blues will aim to avoid a fourth series loss in five years on Wednesday evening, with Laurie Daley's side looking to defend their coach, and their own status in the State of Origin side moving forward.

Games 1 and 2 have been anything but good for the Blues, but with a look to the future, it's clear there is plenty of talent ready to rumble.

Some of the players on this list were mind boggling misses this year, and others are banging on the door already.

We have left Terrell May off the list given what is a perceived lack of appetite from the NSWRL to have him represent the state, but otherwise, all eligible players were considered, with the likes of Phoenix Crossland (who is eligible under the new rules and in fine form), and Reuben Garrick who could well light things up when he moves to the Sydney Roosters next year the closest to miss out.

Luka Doncic's chance for revenge on the Mavericks is slipping away fast

The Los Angeles Lakers lost another game to the Houston Rockets without Luka Doncic last night, and Houston has extended this series to Game 6 after once trailing 3-0. This series would obviously be much different if Doncic were in the lineup alongside LeBron James and Austin Reaves, but his return to the hardwood from his hamstring injury still has a way to go.

Earlier this week, ESPN's Shams Charania stated Doncic would miss the entire series against the Oklahoma City Thunder if the Lakers were to advance past the Rockets. This immediately caused Luka fans to panic, as there once seemed to be hope for a return against OKC.

Lakers’ best bet if Luka Dončić misses potential Thunder series

Los Angeles Lakers are potentially facing a challenging scenario as they advance in the 2026 NBA Playoffs; even though nobody can secure the team’s advance past the Houston Rockets yet, the physical status of star guard Luka Dončić remains a significant concern. In this sense, recent reports indicate that Dončić’s recovery from a hamstring injury is progressing slowly, with a concrete return date still undefined and this news cast a shadow over the purple and gold’s post-season expectations.

A recent update from renowned journalist Shams Charania suggests a cautious approach to Luka Dončić’s recovery; in this way, Charania noted that while the Lakers hope to continue competing, the star point guard is not expected to be available for a hypothetical Western Conference Semifinal series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Indeed, this delay presents a strategic challenge for the Lakers and their head coach, JJ Redick, as they navigate critical games without their best scorer.

Both major parties have problems, but you’d still rather be Anthony Albanese than Angus Taylor.

Australian Olympic champion Jakara Anthony has kept her stunning Games record alive, making it five rounds of competition unbeaten after she topped moguls qualifying in Livigno.

Four years ago, Anthony also opened with a bang in qualifying and then swept through the next three rounds en route to Australia's first women's moguls gold medal.

The 27-year-old joined her fellow opening ceremony flag-bearer Matt Graham as the two Australian skiers to bypass the next qualification round, with the 2018 silver medallist grabbing the 10th and final spot in the men's event earlier on Tuesday.

Update on John Cena vs. Gunther at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event

John Cena will have all the time he wants at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Our own Bryan Alvarez wrote to his subscribers on X that with Cena vs. Gunther scheduled to open the show, and the event having no set runtime, Cena will have as much time as he needs.

“At this point, there is no set runtime for Saturday Night’s Main Event, so everyone will get all the time they need. Cena vs. Gunther is currently scheduled to open the show and Cena will get as much time as he wants.”

Dave Meltzer also addressed Cena vs. Gunther opening the show in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, noting that since the show is airing only on Peacock in the United States, and not NBC, they are not confined to a hard out at 10 p.m. Eastern, as they were for Goldberg’s retirement match in July.
