Should the Easter Monday clash been played at Accor?

Andrew Voss and David Riccio have debated whether the NRL has missed a trick by not moving the Eels vs Tigers Easter Monday clash to Accor Stadium.

Throughout the last fourteen years, the NRL has made a point of scheduling blockbuster games during the Easter long weekend, with the Rabbitohs vs Bulldogs clash on Good Friday, while the Eels take on the Tigers on the Monday.

Since the two sides began playing on Easter Monday in 2014, the crowd has exceeded 30,000 only four times, compared to the Good Friday clash, which has only dipped below that mark once.

With those smaller crowds, it has seen three of the last four games being played at the smaller CommBank Stadium.

Bronson Garlick did go over the top of Hughes in the tackle.

Hughes has stayed down but is told to get on with it by the referee if he can.

The replay shows a bit of pressure but Garlick got off him immediately as soon as he was in a bad position – which is exactly what you want to see.

Live: Giants, Hawks clash in Sydney before premiers open campaign in Brisbane

An injury-hit GWS sides open their season against Hawthorn in Sydney, before the Brisbane Lions unfurl their premiership flag against the Bulldogs.

The Giants have had a nightmare preseason with injuries and they will take on the Hawks without star players Tom Green, Josh Kelly, Sam Taylor and Aaron Cadman.

Last year's preliminary finalists Hawthorn will start favourites, but they will also be missing key personnel including Will Day and Cam McKenzie.

Later, the Lions will begin their tilt at a third-straight premiership at the Gabba when they take on Western Bulldogs under lights on Saturday night.

The spotlight will be on Lachie Neale, who gave up the Brisbane co-captaincy earlier this year amid his marriage breakdown.

Toby Greene has begun in the midfield for the Giants, with Jake Stringer botching a tough set shot for goal to register the first score of the game. The Hawks would have been buoyed by the strong mark taken by Mitch Lewis in response.

However, a 50m penalty against Massimo D’Ambrosio for being in the protected zone has gifted Jake Riccardi a goal from about 25 metres.

The weather is a big watch in Sydney, with dark skies now hovering. Rain and possible lightning have been forecast. We’ll see.

Key forward's 'tricky' injury adds to Giants' woes ahead of Hawks clash

Adam Kingsley isn't in panic mode over GWS's injury list but wasn't expecting to lose Aaron Cadman for the season starter

RISING Greater Western Sydney forward Aaron Cadman is managing a "tricky" pelvis issue and won't be pushed to return ahead of time, despite the club's star-studded injury list.

Cadman didn't play in the official practice match against Sydney, and then trained a few days later, whereupon the injury flared again. On Tuesday, he was listed as being out for two weeks with a pelvic problem.

The Giants' injury list is littered with first-choice players, including Toby Bedford (hamstring), Leek Aleer (groin), Brent Daniels (hamstring), Sam Taylor (hamstring), Darcy Jones (knee), Josh Kelly (hip) and Tom Green (ACL).

Senegal v Mali: Neighbours clash with semi-final place on the line

A fiercely contested West African derby awaits in Tangier on Friday as Senegal and Malilock horns in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco 2025, with a coveted semi-final berth at stake.

It is a meeting rich in history, respect and rivalry, bringing together two neighbours who know each other intimately and whose encounters are often defined by fine margins.

While Senegal arrive with the momentum of recent champions and one of the tournament’s most consistent records, Mali step into Tangier buoyed by resilience, belief and a reputation for thriving under pressure.

Senegal have grown steadily stronger as the tournament has progressed. Unbeaten in their last 15 AFCON matches, the Lions of Teranga have combined attacking efficiency with mental resilience, most recently coming from behind to defeat Sudan in the Round of 16 — a rare but significant show of character in knockout football.

AFCON update: Sarr, Bissouma to face off in quarter finals

The Africa Cup of Nations is in full swing, and Spurs are representing!

And the idea of a tournament in the middle of the season just seems silly to me – take that 2022 World Cup! But the Africa Cup of Nations is one of those international fixtures that actually means something, so I’ll deal with it. Tottenham Hotspur actually have two representatives at the tournament in the form of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma, representing Senegal and Mali, respectively – with Mohammed Kudus’ Ghana failing to qualify.

Both have seen success at the tournament thus far, with both Mali and Senegal qualifying for the latter stages of the competition, albeit in very different circumstances. Senegal, one of the favorites for the trophy, cruised comfortably through the group stages, with a draw against Democratic Republic of the Congo the sole blemish on their record as they kept clean sheets in wins against both Benin and Botswana. They then eased past Sudan in the Round of 16 with a 3-1 win after an early scare when Sudan opened the scoring. Unfortunately for Sarr (but fortunately for Spurs) Sarr’s involvement in these matches thus far has been limited, making only a solitary appearance as he started and played 81 minutes in the 3-1 win over Benin.

Looming FA Cup clash set to help Aussie star's case for World Cup selection under Tony Popovic

A chance to test yourself against some of the best the game has to offer rarely comes about for those outside top flight football, but Callum Elder is about to do exactly that.

The Australian star is one of the many Aussie talents that have established a regular spot in a European league, currently representing Derby County in the EFL Championship.

Elder comes up against 17 of his Australian teammates on a regular basis in the league, but his skills will be truly put to the test when he takes to the field in the FA Cup on Sunday.

One of Aussie football’s most successful UK exports has flown under the radar… until now

You could make a case that Callum Elder has flown under the radar in Australian football… until now.

In a period where there has been a shortage of Australians operating at the highest level in the Premier League and across Europe, the left-back has become a mainstay in the upper echelons of the English game, recently bringing up 300 club career appearances.

Yet, Elder’s exploits have only yielded three caps for the Socceroos, with two coming in the most recent window against Venezuela and Colombia, four years on from his debut off the bench in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over China.

The English FA Cup third round kicks off Friday, and it remains one of the most anticipated dates on the calendar — a weekend when non-league part-timers get the chance to realize the dream of playing — and beating — professional clubs, including the biggest teams in the Premier League.

It can be a weekend the top clubs dread given the risk of becoming the victim of a giant-killing, but it is the first step on the road to Wembley for the teams hoping to win the competition this season.

How another early clash with Heat can help Knicks in the long run

The Knicks see Monday’s clash against the Heat in Miami as a valuable opportunity to prepare for the postseason.

It marks the third time the Knicks will have played against the Heat in the first 13 games this season, and the second within three days.

“It’s a good playoff warmup, practice, playing the same team over two days or three days,” Karl-Anthony Towns said after practice Sunday. “You gotta be ready for them to adjust, ready for them to do what they gotta do as a coaching staff to counteract what we do and what we showed them last game. It’s gonna be good for us to have sort of a playoff series style of play where we played them two days ago and now we’re about to play them again and at their house. It’s kind of those momentum shifts you see in Game 2 or 3 or 4 and 5 [of a playoff series]. It’s gonna be good for us to have practice with that.”

Knicks Bulletin: ‘I don’t think so, but I’m sure it helps’

No, you’ve not clicked on the wrong link. It’s the third Knicks vs. Heat game in 13 dates.

New York gets its first long road trip of the season going with another matchup against the Miamiamenses, this time in Florida.

Here’s a bunch of stuff we’ve heard in the past few hours.

“He plays with really good pace. He doesn’t need the ball in his hands, so he’s a connector. He plays with pace. He’s got to be guarded. And not just pace in the full court, getting to the corners or getting to the wing, but even in the half court, we try to cut and move a lot. When you cut, when you make Canada cuts, he gets from point A to point B really fast. So if you kind of lag or something like that, our guys know where guys should be in different concepts or actions. So you lag and he gets from point A to point B, he’s going to get a wide-open 3 and most times, it’s going to go in. Good dude, too. He’s just a good dude.”

Knicks vs. Heat Prediction, Odds and Best NBA Prop Bets for Monday, Nov. 17

For the second time in as many games and the third time this season, the New York Knicks will take on the Miami Heat on Monday night.

New York lost the first meeting in Miami, but it bounced back in an NBA Cup clash on Friday night, winning without Jalen Brunson behind huge games from Karl-Anthony Towns and Landry Shamet.

Brunson is out for Monday’s game as he recovers from an ankle sprain that he suffered last week against Orlando.

Meanwhile on the Heat side, Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro are listed as out for this matchup. Oddsmakers have set the Heat as favorites, and these teams have played two fairly close games so far this season with the home team covering in both matchups.
