Google's AI model Gemini accessed the internet and hacked three companies during a cybersecurity evaluation.

Gemini found public information online and guessed credentials to access three websites.

Researchers say loss of control incidents with AI are on the rise, with the potential for more serious incidents with "catastrophic consequences" to come.

Google's Gemini AI model has accessed the internet and hacked other companies during a test of its cybersecurity capabilities, in the first known example of the company's artificial intelligence systems autonomously committing such an act.

Google's Gemini AI hacked three companies in security test

Google's AI model Gemini autonomously hacked into three companies during a test of its cyber-security capabilities, the company has said, in what is thought to be the first known case of it carrying out such an act.

Gemini found "public information online and guessed credentials to access websites it thought were part of the test", a Google official told the BBC, noting that in each instance "the model stopped".

It comes after renewed public scrutiny over the pace of AI development, with some tech firms calling for a slowdown as they raise concerns over its potential threat to humanity – though not all companies agree.

Google says its Gemini AI model hacked three other companies

Disclosure comes after OpenAI and Anthropic hacks amid fears that tech firms unable to control powerful AI models

In a first for Google, the company confirmed that its AI model, Gemini, breached the security of three other companies in May. The hacks occurred during a cybersecurity evaluation by AI-security firm Irregular.

Irregular, an Israel-based startup that scrutinizes the security of advanced AI systems, was also at the center of some of the recent OpenAI and Anthropic hacks of third-party entities, including OpenAI’s breach of AI software company, Hugging Face.

The circumstances that enabled the models to hack other companies in some of these cases are similar: Irregular was testing the models in a closed testing environment with fake companies. The testing environment was not supposed to be internet enabled, but internet access was made available unintentionally, according to the Wall Street Journal. Once connected to the internet, the models unexpectedly hacked into real firms.

Natural gas taxes are back in the fray after the expansion of Australia's largest project received environmental approval ahead of Senate inquiry hearings this week which will probe how resources are taxed.

Australia's offshore petroleum regulator NOPSEMA has approved an environment plan for further development of US-based multinational Chevron's Gorgon project, off Western Australia's north-west coast.

Chevron is planning to install new wells and pipelines to maintain the Gorgon project's gas production rates of about 15.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year.

Over 30 years this would equate to about 468 million tonnes of LNG.

Treasurer says capital gains changes and other tax reform still under consideration

Sticking with the budget, Chalmers said the government hasn’t made any decisions on capital gains tax reform.

The federal budget in three weeks’ time is widely expected to include changes to tax breaks for investors, in an effort to rebalance the tax system away from the wealthiest Australians and to take pressure off home prices.

London | As the Albanese government mulls an extra tax on Australian gas companies, advocates of resource wealth redistribution often point to Norway as the gold standard for making fossil fuel producers pay.

For decades the Scandinavian nation of just 5.5 million has tapped revenue from wealthy energy companies to fund expensive social spending initiatives and give Norwegians a lifestyle that is the envy of the world.
