'Meant to be in Perth': Passengers confused by Sydney's new airport

Julie Lundmark's return to Sydney was, unexpectedly, via the new Western Sydney airport. (ABC: Tyler Hall)

Some passengers were unaware their flights were to Western Sydney International Airport.

The passengers were left scrambling to figure out alternative travel arrangements.

Sydney's new status as a two-airport city is already causing confusion for some travellers.

Julie Lundmark, from Sweden, headed to Melbourne for the weekend from Sydney Airport but was surprised to discover her return flight landed at the brand new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI).

The airport, which has been decades in the making, began operating passenger flights on Sunday.

Ms Lundmark and her friend were on Jetstar flight JQ373 when they realised the mistake.

The first international commercial flight has flown from Western Sydney International to Auckland, New Zealand.

Air New Zealand flight NZ166 took off at 9.17am, the first international departure from the airport, before landing two hours and 41 minutes later in Auckland at 1.58pm local time. (WSI’s first domestic flight – a Jetstar flight to the Gold Coast – took place yesterday.)

The Air New Zealand plane had touched down earlier on Monday at WSI, arriving from Auckland at 7.27am. The trans-Tasman flight marks the start of the airline’s travel to WSI, where it will fly three times weekly from Auckland.

A place in the history books but no toastie: my time on board Western Sydney airport’s inaugural flight

The mood is jubilant on the Airbus A320 Neo as aviation enthusiasts and locals thrill at their place on the first flight

Western Sydney airport is open from today. Here’s everything you need to know

My journey begins at 3.57am when I step out on to the street in Enmore, wheeling a small suitcase.

I’m going to catch the inaugural flight from the new Western Sydney international airport on Sunday morning, operated by Jetstar. The enormous $5.3bn greenfield development more than 40 years in the making is opening its architecturally lauded halls to commercial passengers, with significant fanfare.

There will be 188 passengers onboard JQ362, with 30 seats reserved for media and VIP guests and the other 158 sold out in just 45 minutes, according to the airline. I get to be a part of this history-making moment. But first, I have to get there.

Carlos Alcaraz loses 16 straight points before rallying to reach Japan Open final

TOKYO (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz is going to play his first final since coming back from a 4 ½-month layoff for a right wrist injury.

The third-ranked Alcaraz lost 16 straight points at the end of the first set and the start of the second before coming back to beat qualifier Jaume Munar 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the Japan Open semifinals on Monday.

In Tuesday’s final, Alcaraz will face either Valentin Vacherot or Jiri Lehecka, who were playing next.

Alcaraz returned from injury in late August and made a run to the U.S. Open quarterfinals, where he lost to Ben Shelton in a match that ended at 3:33 a.m. He’s been wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm since his return.

‘No common sense’: Mitchell’s swipe at umpire call that cost ‘the Wizard’ a goal in Hawks’ big win

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has hit out at an umpiring call that robbed forward Nick Watson of a half-time goal on a night the Marvel Stadium surface came under fire for being too slippery under a closed roof.

Mitchell said he was glad Watson’s overturned goal did not affect his side’s 52-point victory – 18.11 (119) to 9.13 (67) – but said the club would be going to the AFL looking for an explanation.

Watson booted a goal after the half-time siren from the right forward pocket, but the umpires ruled he had run off his line – disallowing the score.

“There’s no common sense about that,” Mitchell said. “I would hope that we get an answer from the AFL, I’m sure we will.”
