"Unprecedented" High Court Action as Cape Verde Sickness Claims Mount

What was promised as a dream getaway to the sun-drenched beaches of the Cape Verde archipelago has allegedly turned into a legal and medical nightmare for thousands of British holidaymakers. As of May 2026, travel giant TUI is embroiled in one of the largest coordinated legal actions of its kind, with more than 1,700 individuals now pursuing damages following severe gastric outbreaks.

The litigation, spearheaded by specialist international injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, alleges that guests at several popular resorts were exposed to life-threatening bacterial and parasitic infections. Claimants report a harrowing list of illnesses, including:

The scale of the crisis is underscored by reports from legal representatives suggesting that at least eight British tourists have died after contracting illnesses during their stay in the West African nation since January 2023. Victims have ranged from elderly travellers to infants as young as six months old.

A solicitor representing more than 2,000 individuals pursuing legal action against TUI over illness in Cape Verde has warned it could be the "tip of the iceberg".

More than 2,000 people joined a personal injury claim being brought against the German company after holidaymakers fell ill in the west African island chain. Solicitors from Irwin Mitchell said they were continuously being approached by people who reported developing gastric illnesses, including E coli, salmonella and shigella, and even parasitic infections such as cryptosporidium during Tui package holidays.

More than 2,000 tourists sue over Cape Verde outbreak

More than 2,000 tourists are taking legal action after a cape verde stomach illness outbreak left eight people dead, with holidaymakers reporting infections including Shigella, Salmonella and E. coli. Jatinder Paul, the lawyer representing victims through Irwin Mitchell, said the claims could be “the tip of the iceberg.”

Paul said, “These are just the people that have contacted us.” He added, “This litigation is on an absolute huge scale,” and, “It’s not something that I’ve ever seen before.” The legal claims are mainly against TUI, which has taken over a million tourists to Cape Verde in recent years.

Victims said they were left with dirty hotels, unsafe food and problems with the islands’ water systems. Paul said, “We’ve heard over and over again meat being uncooked,” and, “We’ve seen photographs of chicken that is quite clearly raw.” He also said, “We’ve seen flies on food, considerable flies on food.”

The world’s richest man, the AI king, and a courtroom showdown

For two men whose companies promise to remake civilisation, the opening day was strangely pedestrian. The microphones in a federal courtroom in downtown Oakland kept cutting out. A presentation slide vanished from the screens. “We can’t hear you,” Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said, before drily observing that the federal judiciary would happily accept additional taxpayer funds.

Sitting under the fluorescent lights this week were Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, and Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI. Their tech empires are worth, between them, more than $US3 trillion ($4.2 trillion). Yet here they were, fidgeting through technical hitches a few metres apart, separated by years of broken friendship, as the most consequential trial of the AI age finally got under way.

Elon Musk vs Sam Altman: how the legal battle of the tech billionaires could shape the future of AI

There was a time when Elon Musk and Sam Altman were friends. But the two tech billionaires are now embroiled in a bitter legal battle in the United States that could reshape not just OpenAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) firm behind ChatGPT they cofounded in 2015, but also the future of the technology more broadly.

Launched by Musk in 2024, the lawsuit is the culmination of a years-long feud that centres on the evolution of OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit enterprise.

The trial, which kicked off this week in California, is expected to last roughly three weeks. But its ripple effects could be felt for many years to come.

Britney Spears has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and at least one drug after officers from the California Highway Patrol said she failed a series of field sobriety tests.

The 44-year-old pop star has been released on bail and will be arraigned on Monday local time.

Spears entered treatment for substance abuse following her arrest on March 4, and prosecutors have indicated she will be offered the chance to plead guilty and receive a year of probation.

Britney Spears charged in California with driving under influence

Prosecutors in California have filed a criminal charge against Britney Spears over her arrest last month for allegedly driving under the influence.

The pop star is facing one misdemeanour count of driving under the influence of any alcohol and drug. She was arrested on 4 March on a southern California highway after driving her BMW "erratically at a high rate of speed", authorities said.

Spears, 44, reportedly checked herself into a rehabilitation treatment facility afterwards. Her representatives have called the incident "completely inexcusable".

Her court arraignment is scheduled for next Monday morning, though she is not required to attend in person as it is a minor charge.

Discussing Defence in the Top End

The event was the largest in the series to date and was opened by NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro who used the opportunity to launch the Northern Territory’s 2026 Defence Strategy document.

The strategy itself calls for a disciplined, targeted and relentless advocacy led by the NT Government to ensure that decisions taken on basing, training, force projection and sustainment result in a larger Defence presence in the Top End.

“The Northern Territory is a modern, well-connected and rapidly growing jurisdiction,” the report states. “We will counter outdated narratives about operating in northern Australia by highlighting what the NT offers.”

Elon Musk trial against Sam Altman to reveal OpenAI power struggle

The trial’s outcome could sway the balance of power in AI, and jury selection starts on Monday.

Technology tycoons Elon Musk and Sam Altman are poised to face off in a high-stakes trial revolving around the alleged betrayal, deceit and unbridled ambition that blurred the bickering billionaires’ once-shared vision for the development of artificial intelligence.

The trial, which is scheduled to begin on Monday with jury selection, centres on the 2015 birth of ChatGPT maker OpenAI as a nonprofit start-up primarily funded by Musk before evolving into a capitalistic venture now valued at $852bn.

The trial’s outcome could sway the balance of power in AI, breakthrough technology that is increasingly being feared as a potential job killer and an existential threat to humanity’s survival.

The High Court has dismissed former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann's bid to challenge the outcome of his failed defamation case.

The Federal Court had ruled that on the balance of probabilities, Mr Lehrmann did rape Brittany Higgins at Parliament House in 2019.

The High Court was his last legal avenue to challenge the outcome.

Mr Lehrmann had sued Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson over a 2021 interview on The Project featuring Ms Higgins, in which she said she was raped in the office of then-senator Linda Reynolds, but did not name the man she was accusing.

Bruce Lehrmann loses last-ditch legal effort to appeal defamation case against Network Ten and Lisa Wilkinson

The high court has dismissed his bid to clear his name of findings that, on the balance of probabilities, he raped Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in 2019

Bruce Lehrmann has lost his last legal avenue to challenge his failed defamation case against Network 10 and Lisa Wilkinson after Australia’s top court dismissed his case.

The high court dismissed his bid to challenge the outcome in a short judgment published to its website on Thursday.

It comes after Lehrmann lost an appeal against the finding last year.

In April 2024, Justice Michael Lee found that on the balance of probabilities Lehrmann raped former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in parliament house in 2019, and that Lehrmann was therefore not defamed when Wilkinson interviewed Higgins about the case on The Project.

A former High Court justice previously tapped by Labor to probe Scott Morrison’s multiple ministries is in the frame to lead the widely expected federal royal commission into the Bondi killings.

The potential appointment of Virginia Bell has been flagged by senior Labor figures in recent days and has already prompted pushback from some Jewish leaders in NSW, Bell’s home state, over their belief she might be too left-leaning, a claim the government and Bell’s backers in the legal fraternity will challenge.

The private worry expressed by Jewish leaders has complicated the choice for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as he and his ministers work out details of a national probe he has resisted for weeks.

A royal commission into New Zealand's worst mass shooting could provide a blueprint for a federal inquiry into the Bondi massacre, legal experts say.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has softened his position on setting up a royal commission into the December 14 terrorist attack, where 15 people were killed and more than 40 injured, after previously rejecting calls for such an inquiry.
