Dietitians agree — cut back on 1 thing for better gut health, energy, and lower risk of cancer

Diet advice is rarely one-size-fits-all. But one particular vice — enjoyed daily by more than half of Americans — has become the bane of health experts.

Dietitians really, really want us to step away from the sugary soda.

At a recent nutrition conference in Washington, DC, with more than 3,000 professionals, I asked around about what we should all be eating more of. While everyone had a different answer, nearly all agreed on what to avoid: cutting back on sugary drinks is a simple way to improve your health.

The dietitians (and doctors and researchers) I spoke with had a long list of reasons you should consider swapping out soda, from blood sugar crashes to potential links to increased cancer risk.

What Happens When You Stop Eating Added Sugar for 30 Days

An explainer outlines how a 30‑day break from added sugar can produce measurable changes across skin, liver, heart, and blood sugar systems, and why that matters. It clarifies what counts as added sugar versus natural sugars in fruit and dairy, and notes a low sugar diet was linked in a 2021 study to a 10.5 percent reduction in the liver's fat‑production process over eight weeks. Research cited connects higher sugar intake with increased triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and blood pressure, alongside American Heart Association limits. Registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo reports links to skin inflammation, with individual results varying. Scope remains a month without cutting fruit or dairy.
