Sonay Kartal will look to get past the first round of the Australian Open and might fancy her chances against Anna Kalinskaya who has struggled with injury this past year.

Reflective of Kalinskaya’s injury woes, Kartal was stronger in last year’s hard court season overall – but has had better Slam results on the clay and grass than on the Slam hard courts.

Kartal’s strength since her breakout year on the tour is that she is still a first-time opponent for many of the higher-ranked players. Her disruptive style of play has caused a handful for several players giving her some notable scalps.

Thoughts of an unprecedented 25th major risk becoming all-consuming for Novak Djokovic as he limbers up, locks in and prepares to launch his 21st Australian Open campaign.

At 38, the Serbian knows it is entirely counterproductive and more pertinent that he takes stock of what he has accomplished, rather than what he hasn’t – which, let’s be honest, is not much.

Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has revealed how he went into “lockdown beast mode” at the Melbourne grand slam during a reign of dominance unlike almost any other in the sport.

As he prepares to equal Roger Federer’s record 21 Australian Open main draw appearances, Djokovic professed his love for Australia and backed himself in to still conquer anyone, including Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

“No one is, no one was and no one will ever be unbeatable,” Djokovic said.

It’s the old dilemma of “would you rather?” – the choice between two difficult hypotheticals – which Carlos Alcaraz thought he had the answer for upon arriving in Australia, only for a curve ball to be thrown his way.

The top seed comes to Melbourne Park for Australian Open 2026 on the verge of history as he bids to complete the career Grand Slam this fortnight, a mission which begins on Sunday night against Australia’s Adam Walton.

Challenges don't come much bigger than drawing world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the first round of the Australian Open. This is Australian Adam Walton's fate and he chats to Ned Hall about his excitement over taking to Rod Laver Arena in prime time.

We’ve heard from our first Australian winner Talia Gibson, who was completely blown away with the number of Australian fans who turned up to watch her play on day one.

Kia Arena was packed, with fans in green and gold, singing out chants for their home talent.

“Walking back out on this court today was just the most amazing feeling,” Gibson said.

“Thank you so much to everyone who came out, I couldn’t believe the number of people that were in here today. It just means a lot, thank you so much.”

Australian Open Men’s Day 1 Predictions Including Alexander Bublik vs Jenson Brooksby

With 16 matches on the slate, it promises to be an entertaining first day at Melbourne Park. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule, including Carlos Alcaraz vs Adam Walton, Alexander Zverev vs Gabriel Diallo, and Frances Tiafoe vs Jason Kubler. But who will reach the second round at the Australian Open?

Nurein: The Australian Open has been Alexander Bublik’s least favourite Grand Slam in terms of results. While the Kazakh is now entrenched in the world’s top 10, that doesn’t change the overriding factor about his unpredictability in any match. Jenson Brooksby is a counterpunching machine, but on the evidence of his performances in the opening week of the season, he is unlikely to hurt Bublik.

Australian Open R1 previews and predictions: Bublik vs. Brooksby, Zverev vs. Diallo

The Australian Open gets underway on Sunday, when seeds Alexander Bublik and Alexander Zverev deal with tough first-round tests. They are going up against Jenson Brooksby and Gabriel Diallo, respectively.(10) Alexander Bublik vs. Jenson BrooksbyFor the third time in his career, Bublik is setting off at a Grand Slam as one of the outside title favorites behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. His first such effort did not go well — a first-round loss at Wimbledon to Jaume Munar. The second one was far better, as Bublik beat Tommy Paul en route to the U.S. Open fourth round but got a bad draw and lost to Jannik Sinner. A banner 2025 campaign that featured four ATP titles allowed Bublik to be an alternate at the Nitto ATP Finals. Picking up right where he left off, the 28-year-old Kazakh kicked off this season with a title in Hong Kong. There are no more bad draws in the early stages of a slam for Bublik as the No. 10 player in the world, but a matchup with Brooksby on Sunday is not a friendly one by opening-round standards. Brooksby is back up to No. 48 in the world and he would probably be seeded at majors right now had it not been for a two-year suspension in 2023 and 2024. The 25-year-old American won his only previous meeting with Bublik 6-2, 6-3 at the 2022 Montreal Masters. Unfortunately for Brooksby, this is an entirely different Bublik that will be on the other side of the net. This would be tricky for the Bublik of old, but the 10th seed’s current style of bully ball should be enough to dispose of Brooksby’s junk-balling.Pick: Bublik in 3 #ays-poll-id-696c5b447df00.box-apm { width: 600px; Muhammad Ali forever stamp the ultimate reversal of government's view of him

Louisville — Postal officials unveiled a commemorative stamp of boxing legend Muhammad Ali in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, on Thursday, featuring a photo of the champ in his fighting prime.

The Postal Service printed 22 million of the Ali stamps, which feature an Associated Press photo from 1974 showing the fighter holding up his gloves in a fighting stance. His last name, in bold black and red all-cap lettering, accents the stamp.

"We honor Muhammad Ali here in his hometown, a city that shaped him and that he reshaped forever," said longtime broadcaster Bob Costas, who hosted the unveiling event.

The champ's friends and family gathered to celebrate the issuance of the stamp, which went on sale Thursday.

For the first time in the race's history, the peloton will host all 14 WorldTour teams as well as a composite team of Australian National Team riders.

It's January, and January in the world of women's professional road racing only means one thing: Tour Down Under. For riders who live in Europe or North America, it's a chance to escape the cold and cram in some quality training in the Adelaide hills, with a few days of racing to really get the engines firing. For the Australians, it's an opportunity to display what form they have on the world stage, although a little less so this year.
