Allegra Spender on the hardest decision she's ever made

Allegra Spender says she is proud to be doing politics "in a different way". (ABC TV)

As a child, independent MP Allegra Spender spent her school holidays like many of us do: tagging along to her parents' work.

If she wasn't stuffing envelopes for her father John Spender, the Liberal MP for the federal seat of North Sydney, she was with her mum, famed businesswoman and fashion designer Carla Zampatti.

Join Annabel Crabb for a brand new season as she breaks bread with six of the federal parliament's most fascinating and powerful figures from across the political spectrum.

"I remember when I was about 11 and [my sister] Bianca was 12, [Mum] wanted us to realise how hard you need to work to be successful. And so, we used to work in her office every single school holiday," the member for Wentworth told Annabel Crabb on ABC iview's Kitchen Cabinet.

Kitchen Cabinet: Aug 4

Guest tonight on Kitchen Cabinet is Allegra Spender, Member for Wentworth, NSW. Independent.

Annabel meets with Independent MP Allegra Spender, who – in 2022 – boldly nabbed the Liberal Party’s crown jewel, the affluent Sydney seat of Wentworth, and has held onto it ever since. In the episode we learn about what motivates this serial overachiever, who started working as a kid in the fashion design business of her mother, the late Carla Zampatti. Much later, she became managing director of that business.

Spender also talks about the embarrassment of door knocking with her Liberal MP father, John Spender and explains why she is not a Liberal MP today. Over bread and an Italian soup, the pair talk tax policy, the country / city divide and the devasting Bondi terror attack in Spender’s electorate.

KITCHEN CABINET puts Allegra Spender’s family legacy in focus

In Episode 3, Annabel meets Allegra Spender, the Member for Wentworth, NSW, representing Independent / Community Strong Australia, for a discussion covering her political journey, family background and key issues affecting her community.

The episode explores what has driven Spender, who began working as a child in the fashion business founded by her mother, the late Carla Zampatti, before later becoming managing director of the company.

It also looks at Spender’s successful 2022 campaign to win the affluent Sydney electorate of Wentworth, a seat previously held by the Liberal Party, and how she has retained it since.

During the conversation, Spender reflects on the embarrassment of door-knocking alongside her father, former Liberal MP John Spender, and explains why she is not a Liberal MP today.
